Apply by Oct. 19 for Fac. Dev. Grant for Travel

Interested in learning from your colleagues who teach abroad? Curious how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching? Consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs!

The purpose of the grant is to provide Augsburg faculty with an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. This can be done in the context of the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2010, by participating as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or by attending one of CGEs open programs led by individuals outside of Augsburg.

All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).

The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2010, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under "Lilly Funding Applications." The deadline to apply is October 19, 2009.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states that:

No otherwise qualified person with a disability in the United States…shall, solely by reason of…disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Who is Protected Under the Law?

A "person with a disability" is "any person who (i) has a physical or mental impairment, which substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities; (ii) has a record of such an impairment; or (iii) is regarded as having such an impairment."

Metropass Replacing Monthly Transit Pass

The monthly passes that have been sold in the previous years has been discontinued as of September 1, 2009 and has been replaced by the new Metropass Go-To Card. Order your Metropass card as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new pass. There will be a 2 -3 week delay between the time the application is filled out and the time the new Metropass cards are delivered. Temporary pass cards will be available to allow applicants to continue bus use until their new passes arrive. Fill out a Metropass application at the Enrollment service counters at Sverdrup 100 as soon as possible.

All Augsburg employees working 20 hours per week or greater are eligible to participate in the Metropass program. Participants must sign up for the pass for a contract year that begins this September 1st and goes through August 31, 2010. The cost of the pass is $38.00 per month and it will be automatically deducted (pre-tax) from participants pay. Each participant has the opportunity to renew their card during the last month of the contract year.

The Go-To cards are quicker to use on bus and trains and they also eliminate the need to go and purchase a monthly card at the service counter every month. The Go-To cards are good for light rail and buses, every day, all day including trips to some of the outlying suburbs. Riders will have to provide additional cash to the driver for exceptionally long commutes outside the 7 county metro area. Travel by bus companies other than Metro Transit are not included in this program. Participants must agree to participate for the contract year, allow their I.D. picture to be used on the Go-To card and participants must return the card to Human Resources when their employment at the college ends. The cash value cards will still be on sale at the Enrollment counter with the same 50% discount as before. If you need more information please call Tom Ruffaner @ Ext. 1641.

Mark Hanis Lecture - October 9

Mark Hanis will be speaking at Augsburg on Friday October 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. Hanis is 24 years old and is head of the Genocide Intervention Network. This non-profit group is trying hard to prevent genocide in Darfur and talks about how the world is responding to the 300,000 killed and the two million displaced victims of Darfur. Hanis was a grandchild of four Holocaust survivors adding a background in human rights. He graduated from Swarthmore College and has been featured in the New York Times and The New Republic, and has also appeared on CNN Headline News. After hearing about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan Hanis realized he needed to do something to help stop the world's worst crime. Become aware and support Mark Hanis on his journey to stop genocide.

Jazz Pianist Jason Moran: Convocation, Oct. 13

After seven years on the inestimable Blue Note Records, 34 year-old pianist Jason Moran has proven his brilliance as a performer. He's established himself as a risk-taker and a seeker of new directions for jazz as a whole. Looking to the wider world of art for inspiration, Moran has found it in edgy 20th century painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat ("JAMO Meets SAMO" and his ongoing series of "Gangsterism" compositions), Egon Schiele (from whose painting entitled "Facing Left" Moran borrowed the title of his second album for Blue Note), and Robert Rauschenberg, whose chaotic refinement inspired Moran's third album Black Stars, featuring the legendary Sam Rivers. Moran's driving philosophy involves an effort to turn the proverbial marginality of Jazz to advantage. He and his group plan to invade the worlds of conservatory and vernacular art, scramble black Americana and European modernism (in the mostly disused but worthy tradition of Duke Ellington), combine the databases of "traditional" and "experimental" jazz, and generally thrill audiences. Augsburg College will have a taste of this compelling creative adventurism when Mr. Moran visits the campus on October 13, 2009.

Camp Darfur

On Friday, October 9, Augsburg College will host Camp Darfur. This project will raise awareness about the current Sudanese genocide. To date, 400,000 people have died in Sudan, and over 2.5 million have been displaced. The displaced Sudanese have no choice but to live in filthy refugee camps, where they are at risk for more violence and starvation. Sudan's dictator, Omar al-Bashir, recently banned food and medicine from entering the region, making survival even more difficult. Camp Darfur will provide historical genocide facts, tell stories of refugees, and set up various tents that chronicle genocide. Visit www.stopgenocidenow.org/campdarfur for more details.

Feminist Film Friday

This Friday, Oct. 9th the Women's Resource Center will be hosting the first Feminist Film Friday of the semester from 3:30-5:30p.m. We will be viewing the film "La Misma Luna." Below is a brief description of the film:

In her feature debut, Patricia Riggen offers a touching tale of the way the love between a mother and child can thrive and endure despite physical separation.
In La Misma Luna (The Same Moon), Riggen gives us the parallel stories of nine-year-old Carlitos and his mother, Rosario. In the hopes of providing a better life for her son, Rosario works illegally in the U.S. while her mother cares for Carlitos back in Mexico. Unexpected circumstances drive both Rosario and Carlitos to embark on their own journeys in a desperate attempt to reunite. Along the way, mother and son face challenges and obstacles but never lose hope that they will one day be together again. Riggen's film is not only a heartwarming family story; she also offers subtle commentary on the much-debated issue of illegal immigration.

Adeptly weaving the stories of mother and son, Riggen has created a poignant film that reminds us that the most important thing in life is the love of family. At every turn, La Misma Luna (The Same Moon) underscores the notion that geography is insignificant, for we are all under the same moon."

The film will be in Spanish with English subtitles so if you are interested please come on by! Hot beverages will be provided.

Feminist Film Friday
"La Misma Luna"
Friday, October 9th
3:30-5:30p.m.
In the Women's Resource Center (SVE 207)
