Tour Norway, June 5-15, 2010

Please join Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies for an educational and cultural tour to Norway, June 5-15, 2010. This specially designed tour includes visits to Oslo, Kongsberg, Geilo, Bergen, and Stavanger. While in Oslo, we will be hosted by Diakonhjemmet University College, an Augsburg partner school that offers a master's degree in value-based leadership. We will stay on or near campus. Faculty from Diakonhjemmet will lead three morning sessions that complement our travels.

The tour includes:
- Five days in Oslo, located on a fjord, surrounded by hills, and full of the excitement of a large, cosmopolitan city
- A journey westward by motor coach through Kongsberg, the historic Numedal Valley, and Hardangervidda (the mountain plateau home of large reindeer herds) to stay in a charming traditional hotel in Geilo
- A famously scenic train ride to the fjord village of Flåm and a cruise on the Aurlands and Naeroy Fjords
- Two nights in picturesque and historic Bergen on Norway's west coast
- A journey south by motor coach and ferry to Stavanger, designated "European Capital of Culture" for 2008. Stavanger was the main departure point for Norwegian immigrants to America. After an overnight stay, we will depart for home from Stavanger.

Cost: $3799 (includes airfare, accommodations, in-country travel, entrance fees during group excursions, tour guides, workshops at Diakonhjemmet, and 15 meals).

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Section 508 - Access to Technology
In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. '794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.

Seven Strategies for Charitable Giving Seminar

Augsburg is hosting an ACTC sponsored educational seminar through Principal Financial Group. This event will be facilitated by Mike Schwartz, former Augsburg men's hockey coach.

Date: Tuesday, October 13
Time: 9:00 to 10:30 am
Location: Christensen Center, Minneapolis Room

No registration is required. All members of the Augsburg community and ACTC member schools are invited to attend this workshop.

Recent studies show that people make charitable contributions primarily because they want to make a difference. But whether they support educational foundations, medical research, or humanitarian programs, contributors feel they lack the knowledge that is essential to maximize the effectiveness of their gifts.

At this educational presentation, you will learn:

- Seven gifting strategies that can make your gift more effective
- How each strategy works and its relative strengths and weaknesses
- Considerations when choosing a particular gifting strategy
- Tax benefits associated with planned giving
- Qualifying organizations to which you can give

Everyone who attends will receive a full-color, 20-page workbook on charitable giving strategies. This valuable resource is packed with information that will help you take a good look at your personal situation and evaluate your options.

Auditions for Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew

Fall Main Stage Theatre Auditions, October 12, 13 and 15

Casting: an ensemble of players between 12 and 16 roles

The Augsburg Theatre Arts Department will hold auditions for its winter main stage production, The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare, directed by Darcey Engen. Auditions will be held in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre, Foss Center Monday Oct. 12 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday Oct. 13 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.

Please note that all those cast will be required to rehearse a week before classes resume beginning January.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! Audition monologues and a copy of the play The Taming of the Shrew can be found easily in any library, on-line and on reserve in the library under Darcey Engen's name. Please choose carefully prepare one monologue from those provided. The most successful audition is one that is well prepared, memorized with performance choices. If you cannot memorize, try to know the piece very well so that you don't need to refer to it often. It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of the piece and an idea of the characters.

This production will be approached through a feminist lens. Through a collaborative rehearsal process, the end production will be a deconstructed, playful and raucous version of the play with strong music and music elements. You do not need to be able to "sing" to be cast in this production.

Call back auditions will be help Thursday October 15, from 7:00-9:30 p.m. Rehearsals will begin November 16, break for the holidays and resume January 4. Please note that all those cast will need to be at all rehearsals January 4-8. The week of January 4 is a week before classes begin in the spring semester. Unfortunately, because of the large scale of the production and the collaborative nature of rehearsals, we will not be able to work around any one actor's schedule. Shrew performs February 5th through the 14th with a day performance on Wednesday Feb. 10th at 1:00 p.m.

Jazz Pianist Jason Moran, Convocation: Oct 13

After seven years on the inestimable Blue Note Records, 34 year-old pianist Jason Moran has proven his brilliance as a performer. He's established himself as a risk-taker and a seeker of new directions for jazz as a whole. Looking to the wider world of art for inspiration, Moran has found it in edgy 20th century painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat ("JAMO Meets SAMO" and his ongoing series of "Gangsterism" compositions), Egon Schiele (from whose painting entitled "Facing Left" Moran borrowed the title of his second album for Blue Note), and Robert Rauschenberg, whose chaotic refinement inspired Moran's third album Black Stars, featuring the legendary Sam Rivers. Moran's driving philosophy involves an effort to turn the proverbial marginality of Jazz to advantage. He and his group plan to invade the worlds of conservatory and vernacular art, scramble black Americana and European modernism (in the mostly disused but worthy tradition of Duke Ellington), combine the databases of "traditional" and "experimental" jazz, and generally thrill audiences. Augsburg College will have a taste of this compelling creative adventurism when Mr. Moran visits the campus on October 13, 2009.

Feminist Film Friday TODAY

The Women's Resource Center will be hosting the first Feminist Film Friday of the semester TODAY from 3:30-5:30p.m. We will be viewing the film "La Misma Luna." Below is a brief description of the film:

"In her feature debut, Patricia Riggen offers a touching tale of the way the love between a mother and child can thrive and endure despite physical separation.

In La Misma Luna (The Same Moon), Riggen gives us the parallel stories of nine-year-old Carlitos and his mother, Rosario. In the hopes of providing a better life for her son, Rosario works 'illegally' in the U.S. while her mother cares for Carlitos back in Mexico. Unexpected circumstances drive both Rosario and Carlitos to embark on their own journeys in a desperate attempt to reunite. Along the way, mother and son face challenges and obstacles but never lose hope that they will one day be together again. Riggen's film is not only a heartwarming family story; she also offers subtle commentary on the much-debated issue of illegal immigration.

Adeptly weaving the stories of mother and son, Riggen has created a poignant film that reminds us that the most important thing in life is the love of family. At every turn, La Misma Luna (The Same Moon) underscores the notion that geography is insignificant, for we are all under the same moon."

The film will be in Spanish with English subtitles so if you are interested please come on by! Hot beverages will be provided.

Feminist Film Friday
"La Misma Luna"
Friday, October 9
3:30-5:30p.m.
In the Women's Resource Center (SVE 207)

Camp Darfur TODAY

On Friday, October 9, Augsburg College will host Camp Darfur. This project will raise awareness about the current Sudanese genocide. To date, 400,000 people have died in Sudan, and over 2.5 million have been displaced. The displaced Sudanese have no choice but to live in filthy refugee camps, where they are at risk for more violence and starvation. Sudan's dictator, Omar al-Bashir, recently banned food and medicine from entering the region, making survival even more difficult. Camp Darfur will provide historical genocide facts, tell stories of refugees, and set up various tents that chronicle genocide. Visit www.stopgenocidenow.org/campdarfur for more details.

Parking Advisory for Saturday Events

MINNEAPOLIS -- With multiple events taking place on the Augsburg College campus this Saturday (10/10), there will be special parking restrictions in place for fans attending the three sporting events at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field that day -- the football game against Carleton (1 p.m.), and the men's/women's soccer doubleheader against Concordia-Moorhead (men at 5 p.m., women at 7:30 p.m.).

Because it is an Augsburg For Adults (Weekend College) weekend, parking in ALL campus lots will be limited to Augsburg parking permit-holders on Saturday morning and afternoon (football game time), when classes are in session. NO FOOTBALL SPECTATOR PARKING WILL BE ALLOWED IN ANY AUGSBURG PARKING LOTS, including "Lot L," the large parking lot adjacent to Edor Nelson Field and Si Melby Hall, during that time. Lot L will be staffed and individuals without proper permits will be turned away. Lots will also be patrolled and non-permit-holders will be ticketed and/or towed at owner's expense.

For the soccer games (5 p.m./7:30 p.m.), Lot L will not be patrolled, since Augsburg For Adults class sessions will be complete by that time; however, the lot will likely still be full, especially prior to the men's soccer game at 5 p.m.

Athletic event spectators are encouraged to park in the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview "Yellow Ramp". The entrance is located off of 23rd Avenue South, north of Riverside Avenue -- roughly a two-block walk to Edor Nelson Field. Parking will be available for $5 in the Yellow Ramp. There are no in-out privileges at the Fairview lots/ramps.

This $5 flat fee does not apply to the Red Ramp directly across Riverside Avenue from Augsburg. People who choose to park in the RED RAMP will be charged the REGULAR HOURLY RATE. In addition, the University of Minnesota has a home football game on Saturday (11 a.m.), so football fans should come early to secure a parking spot.

There is also on-street parking available on the streets around Murphy Square Park in the center of campus, as well as metered parking (enforced 24 hours a day) on Riverside Avenue.

For more information, contact the Augsburg athletic department at 612-330-1249 or the Augsburg Department of Public Safety at 612-330-1717.
