Teaching and Learning

Conference Opportunity

The Center for Teaching and Learning has funds to pay for two faculty or staff to attend the November Collaboration conference. Please contact Terry Martin, x1229 if interested.

"Bridging the Generational Divide: Working Together to Teach Millennial Students"
November 13–14, 2009
Register by the early-bird deadline of October 21 and save $50!

Generational differences are affecting the college teaching and learning environment as never before. Born since 1981, Millennial Students, also called the "Net Generation," form the largest cohort since the Baby Boom, numbering more than 80 million and constituting more than 41% of the current population. They are predicted to enter colleges in record numbers in 2010. The goal of this conference, then, is to address the pressing need for educators to understand and address generational differences on campuses and to discover how faculty and staff are tackling the issues and challenges that arise between generations, both between faculty and students and among faculty themselves. Our goal is to find ways to continue to provide good work climates for all and quality teaching and learning across the curricula. "Bridging the Generational Divide: Working Together to Teach Millennial Students" will be held in November, 2009, at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Bloomington, Minnesota.

October is Disability Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

QUESTION: What is National Disability Employment Awareness Month?
ANSWER: Congress has designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month." www.dol.gov/odep

Mark Hanis Lecture on October 9

"Truth-telling and Advocacy Regarding Genocide (Darfur)"
Mark Hanis will be speaking at Augsburg on Friday October 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. Hanis is 24 years old and is head of the Genocide Intervention Network. This non-profit group is trying hard to prevent genocide in Darfur and talks about how the world is responding to the 300,000 killed and the two million displaced victims of Darfur. Hanis was a grandchild of four Holocaust survivors adding a background in human rights. He graduated from Swarthmore College and has been featured in the New York Times and The New Republic, and has also appeared on CNN Headline News. After hearing about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan Hanis realized he needed to do something to help stop the world's worst crime. Become aware and support Mark Hanis on his journey to stop genocide.

Camp Darfur

On Friday, October 9, Augsburg College will host Camp Darfur. This project will raise awareness about the current Sudanese genocide. To date, 400,000 people have died in Sudan, and over 2.5 million have been displaced. The displaced Sudanese have no choice but to live in filthy refugee camps, where they are at risk for more violence and starvation. Sudan's dictator, Omar al-Bashir, recently banned food and medicine from entering the region, making survival even more difficult. Camp Darfur will provide historical genocide facts, tell stories of refugees, and set up various tents that chronicle genocide. Visit www.stopgenocidenow.org/campdarfur for more details.
