Summer Research/Scholarship Proposals Due TODAY

CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
FACULTY SUMMER RESEARCH GUIDELINES 2009

DESCRIPTION: This grant provides support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include research and creative projects that result in disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of Teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the field.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Proposals should show evidence of thorough preparation and meet the following criteria:
• Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
• Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives and articulation of the time commitment involved
• Explanation of advance preparation and planning
• Clear description of the project's assessment
• Detailed timeline and budget

FUNDING: Up to $2000 is awarded per grant and 2-3 awards are typically made per year.
These grants are supported by Grangaard Faculty Development Fund and award decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be used by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Priority is given to full time tenured and tenure track faculty. Priority is also given to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three year period.

APPLICATION: Please use the Research Application form that is available at the CTL website www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu

Requirements of the grant include:
• Completion of the Center for Teaching and Learning evaluation form and assessment as described in the project application;
• Sharing the results with the Augsburg Community; for example, presentation of a community discussion, Faculty Scholarship Roundtables, or another appropriate and documented venue.

Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant
Summer 2009

Purpose: Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for a faculty member to accelerate completion of a significant project by providing this substantial opportunity.

Description and Eligibility: Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for summer 2009. One grant will be awarded to a faculty member who received tenure prior to the 2008-2009 academic year. One grant will be awarded to a tenure-track faculty member who successfully passed Third-Year Review prior to the 2008-2009 academic year.

Faculty members who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course total in Summer Session.

Application Process: Eligible candidates are asked to submit the Research Application found at www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu

Be sure your information makes clear how receipt of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion; in addition, make explicit the time commitments by you during the summer.

Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2009 and a short final report by Feb 1, 2010.

Three Great Ways to Get Great Veggies this Year

Here are three great ways to get fresh veggies on campus this summer, and one way to get it off campus.

1) Augsburg Farmers Market - we're just starting to set it, so please help us find a good time and place for it by completing this teeny survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=iIU2zseDWkOrGJudK0lopA_3d_3d

2) Community Supported Agriculture - Purchase a share of Ploughshare Farm and each week through the summer, they'll deliver a 20-25 lb box full of organic produce. Let me know if you're interested, and I can match you up with someone if you'd like. More info about the farm and program here: http://www.ploughsharefarm.com/

3) Community Garden - We're just starting to plan for the garden this year (on the corner of 20th Ave and 6th St) and if you want your own 10x10 plot to grow in, we just need $20 and a few hours of your time. Let me know if you're interested in this.

And one option in your own backyard:

4) Backyard Harvest Program - The Permaculture Research Institute is developing a program where they will connect you to an urban farmer who will grow veggies in YOUR OWN yard and train you how to do it in future seasons. More info can be found here: http://www.pricoldclimate.org/about_backyard_harvest

6 to 1 Return on Investment - Better than Madoff

With 1 1/2 weeks to reach our $3,000 goal for the Brian Coyle Foodshelf, we're currently at $1,328.50. Rather than collecting food, we are hosting this FoodLess FoodDrive for Brian Coyle Center. We were just informed that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has agreed to contribute 50% of what we raise, which will turn your one dollar to $1.50, before going to the foodshelf and purchasing $6 of food (the foodshelf can get food more cheaper than we can at the grocery). So it's a 6 to 1 investment - even better than what poor ol' Bernie Madoff could get you!

Checks can be made payable to Brian Coyle Food shelf. You can also drop off your donation to the Center for Service, Work, & Learning (CSWL) office located in the lower level of Anderson Hall. Please call 612-330-1472 with questions. Center for Service, Work, & Learning, Office of Community Relations and Augsburg Dining thank you in advance for helping us meet our goal!

Donate to Abused Women and Children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet. The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are:
bath sized towels
wash cloths
twin size sheets/comforters
pillowcases
diapers
infant formula - all varieties
baby bottles/nipples
craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits)
school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs)
educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
old cell phones with chargers
women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new)

We will be setting up a table in Christensen to collect items and will be available to answer any questions a few times in the coming week. People can also drop off items at the Enrollment Center.

Collecting through April 3rd!

Please contact Ashle with questions at neunsing@augsburg.edu.

Everyone Deserves a Lifetime

Please support me in solidarity with Jessica Nathanson, Kristin Anderson, and many other Auggies, as I walk in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. On the weekend of August 21-23, thousands of women and men will unite and walk 60 miles through the Twin Cities. The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it.

My team, Bouncing Buddhas, together with several generous donations from Augsburg staff and faculty, has raised $750. We have a goal of $10K to reach before August! WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, as well as the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, which provides an endowment for breast cancer initiatives.

Please read my story and consider donating at: http://www.the3day.org/goto/emilyrandall
