Teaching and Learning

Enhance Feedback with Moodle Gradebook

According to Chickering and Gamson (1987), prompt and appropriate feedback on performance is one of the best practices for undergraduate education. Feedback can take on many forms including face-to-face discussions with students, written comments on papers and assessment tracking in a course gradebook. Our campus online course content management system, Moodle, has a built-in gradebook which could provide one mode of feedback for your students.

Please join us on Wednesday, March 11th from 9:20-10:20 am or 1:20-2:20 pm in Foss 22A for a workshop exploring use and setup of Moodle gradebook for your courses. Response to the Wednesday 1:20- 2:20 pm program has been good so we’re adding an additional session on Thursday from 1:20-2:20 pm in Foss 22A. RSVPs for this workshop are appreciated but not necessary and you may attend as much or as little of the session as your schedule allows.

For additional information please contact Eric Strom (x.1739) or Scott Krenz (x.1112)

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables 2009

Thursday 26th March
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission."

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL web page, www.augsburg.edu/ctl We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13th

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Would You Like to be Published?

Do you have an academic paper you're particularly proud of?

It might be worth even more than the grade you received.

The Augsburg Honors Review wants to publish your work. All you have to do is submit it!

What to Submit:
We will consider papers from all disciplines that successfully articulate an original and compelling thesis.

Why Submit?
Being a published author is one of the best ways to demonstrate your writing skills to graduate schools, professional schools, and employers.

How to Submit:
Please send your work to review@augsburg.edu and include the following information:

-- The first and last names of all authors and faculty advisors,
-- Your anticipated graduation date,
-- A reliable way to contact you other than your college-provided email address,
-- The name of the institution where your research was conducted (if other than Augsburg), and
-- The title of your paper.

We prefer Microsoft Word format (.doc) for all attachments.

The priority deadline to submit your work for the 2010 publication is April 20, 2009.

What is the Augsburg Honors Review?
The Augsburg Honors Review is an interdisciplinary journal exhibiting outstanding work by undergraduate students. The goal of the AHR is to give students the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication.

Donate to Abused Women and Children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet. The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are:
bath sized towels
wash cloths
twin size sheets/comforters
pillowcases
diapers
infant formula - all varieties
baby bottles/nipples
craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits)
school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs)
educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
old cell phones with chargers
women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new)

We will be setting up a table in Christensen to collect items and will be available to answer any questions a few times in the coming weeks. People can also drop off items at the Enrollment Center.

4 to 1 Return on Your Investment

How can you get $4 worth of value from your $1 instantly? Give it to those who really need it.

March is MN Food Drive month, and Augsburg College's goal is to raise enough funds to provide one month's worth of food to the Brian Coyle Food shelf. We are collecting cash/checks to accomplish our goal. Rather than collecting food, we are hosting this FoodLess FoodDrive - using commodity programs and bulk buying power, money in the food shelf's hand is worth FOUR times as much as our's in a grocery store. Money also allows the food shelf to purchase exactly what the community needs.

Checks can be made payable to Brian Coyle Food shelf. You can also drop off your donation to the Center for Service, Work, & Learning (CSWL) office located in the lower level of Anderson Hall. Please call 612-330-1472 with questions. Center for Service, Work, & Learning, Office of Community Relations and Augsburg Dining thank you in advance for helping us meet our goal!

Personalized envelopes were meant to be sent to all faculty and staff but there has been a mix up. If you didn't receive your's, feel free to send you contribution anyway. If you got someone else's envelope - don't worry.

Please support me in solidarity with Jessica Nathanson and Kristin Anderson, as I walk in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. On the weekend of August 21st-23rd, 2009 thousands of women and men will unite and walk 60 miles through the Twin Cities.
