Summer 2009
Purpose

Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for a faculty member to accelerate completion of a significant project by providing this substantial opportunity.

Application Process

Eligible candidates are asked to submit the Research Application found at www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu

Be sure your information makes clear how receipt of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion; in addition, make explicit the time commitments by you during the summer.

Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2009 and a short final report by Feb 1, 2010.

Application Date: March 23, 2009 for the summer 2009.

Faculty scholarship roundtables 2009

Thursday 26th March
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the “intermission”.

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues’ work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL web page, www.augsburg.edu/ctl We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13th

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

New partner in China - Liberal arts taught in English

Augsburg established a formal relationship with the United International College in 2007. A student exchange between the two institutions is beginning the 2009-2010 academic year. Interested Augsburg students will initiate the exchange as study abroad students at UIC. An equal number of UIC students will study at Augsburg in the spring semester.

About the United International College (UIC)
The United International College (UIC) is located in the city of Zhuhai, across the bay from Hong Kong. Jointly founded by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University, the college is the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between Mainland China and Hong Kong. The mission of the college is to build a new model for liberal education in China and to nurture talented future graduates with international perspectives.

About the City
Adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, Zhuhai displays a blend of Oriental and Western cultures. It is one of the first Special Economic Zones in China. Located on the west bank of the estuary of the Pearl River, the city covers 7,653 sq km. It is truly a coastal city. Zhuhai has 146 islands scattered in the South China Sea, hence its nickname City of a Hundred Islands. In 2002, the city's population totaled 1.23 million. Today, Zhuhai has evolved from small border villages into a rapidly growing beautiful coastal city with modem economic development zones.

Academics
All courses at UIC are taught in English. Courses are offered in the areas of Business and Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and General Education.

Augsburg students are eligible to register for any of the courses for which they meet prerequisites. UIC courses are worth .75 Augsburg credits. Course approval will be done prior to departure to ensure that a full course load that will meet Augsburg requirements. A Mandarin Chinese language course will be available on a non-credit basis.

Housing and Meals
Students will live in double rooms in the Cultural Village hostel at UIC. All international students will have a Chinese national student for a roommate. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, desk, bed, dresser, closet and private bath. The Village facility also has a small supermarket, a room of washing machines and some meeting rooms.

The cost for the room is about $300 USD per term. There is no meal plan, but students can eat for about $3-$5/day (for 3 meals!!) at the 50 some restaurants and cafeterias adjacent to the campus. The other costs for students are all discretionary spending (travel, personal items, etc.).

Program Dates
The fall semester will begin in the second week of September and end by December 31, 2009. The exact starting date has not yet been determined. The semester is 14 weeks plus 2 weeks for examinations. International students may take their examinations earlier than Chinese national students to ensure that they are home in time for the beginning of second semester in January.

Application Deadline
An extended deadline applies to this particular program. Students may submit applications to Augsburg Abroad until April 1.

Eligibility
Students must have second year standing and a 2.5 GPA.

Program Fees
Students pay the Augsburg on-campus cost for tuition for their term in China. Housing is paid directly to UIC (estimated Fall semester 2009 cost is $300). Food is paid for out of the student’s pocket and is estimated at $3 -$5 per day for three meals.

Financial Aid & Scholarships
Students who receive financial aid (scholarships, grants or loans) at Augsburg can use that aid for study abroad. Loans may be increased as necessary to cover the additional travel costs related to their study abroad program. Students may work with Augsburg Abroad and Augsburg’s Financial Aid Office to determine if they can receive an increase in aid.
