World Visions book group

To all students, staff and faculty: We invite you to join the World Visions book group, which is scheduled for March to coincide with the 21st annual Peace Prize Forum on climate change. We will read "The Firecracker Boys: H-Bombs, Inupiat Eskimos, and the Roots of the Environmental Movement," by Dan O'Neill

"In 1958, Edward Teller, father of the H-bomb, unveiled his plan to detonate six nuclear bombs off the Alaskan coast to create a new harbor. However, the plan was blocked by a handful of Eskimos and biologists who succeeded in preventing massive nuclear devastation potentially far greater than that of the Chernobyl blast. "The Firecracker Boys" is a story of the U.S. government's arrogance and deception, and the brave people who fought against it-launching America's environmental movement. As one of Alaska's most prominent authors, Dan O'Neill brings to these pages his love of Alaska's landscape, his skill as a nature and science writer, and his determination to expose one of the most shocking chapters of the Nuclear Age." (Perseus Books Group)

In addition to O’Neill's book, we will discuss the transcript "Planting the Future" from the public radio show Speaking of Faith. Krista Tippett interviews the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and environmental activist Wangari Maathai.

We will meet on two Wednesdays, March 4th and 18th, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Marshall room. Mark your calendars now and RSVP to reserve your place in the conversation. (fagen@augsburg.edu ) The first twelve people to commit will receive a complimentary book, thanks to funding from WorkCulture@Augsburg.

Looking forward to your participation,
Lynn Ellingson and Kathy Fagen

The English professors are working with us on creating an event where we could share our writings with family, faculty and friends. Please reply to either one of us if you would like to read some of your work.

The reading will take place April 17th and would be followed with a reception, including dessert and thoughtful conversation with friends, family and faculty. If you have any other recommendations or questions, feel free to contact us or any of the professors in the English department. The event is being created for us! Thank you for your help!

Keeping Track of Auggies

Aaron Gabriel directing Stages Theater

Auggie, Aaron Gabriel, is directing the regional premiere of "How Can You Run With A Shell On Your Back?" at Stages Theatre in Hopkins. Along with a cast of young performers, the composer's mother Marilee Mahler, will perform this new musical which was given its world premiere in 2008 at the Chicago Shakespeare Festival and won the regional Tony award later that year.

To hear samples of the songs, go to www.michaelmahler.com and click on 'How Can You Run...' in the upper right-hand corner.

The production of "HOW CAN YOU RUN WITH A SHELL ON YOUR BACK?" runs from March 6 through March 22, 2009. Tickets are available at www.stagestheatre.org or by calling (952) 979-1111.

The story: Six students are stuck in detention, each for a different reason. When one of them reveals a book called “Aesop’s Fables,” the fun begins. Mixing the modern world of student life with the wonderful lessons of the Tortoise and the Hare, the Ant and the Grasshopper, and other beloved stories, Stages Theatre Company alumnus Michael Mahler and Alan Schmuckler have created this original, musical comedy.
