Teaching and Learning

Faculty scholarship roundtables 2009

Thursday 26th March
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission."

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL web page, www.augsburg.edu/ctl . We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13th

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Biology Colloquium - Thursday, Feb. 19

This month's Biology Colloquium meets Thursday February 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Kennedy 303/305.

Albeit a week late, it is an occasion to commemorate the life of Charles Darwin (b Feb 12, 1809) by screening a new film from David Wollert called "Paradise Lost: The Religious Life of Charles Darwin".

*NAMED EDITOR'S PICK BY THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION*
*SCREENED AT NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BIOLOGY TEACHERS CONFERENCE*

"Although Charles Darwin made significant contributions to modern science, the implications of his theories on religious thought are also of great interest. What better way to explore this timely issue than through Darwin's own religious journey? In this intellectually provocative documentary film, director David Wollert personalizes one of the great controversies of the modern era. The viewer is asked to take Charles Darwin's faith journey.

Incorporating voice-over's from his journals and autobiography, the film traces Darwin's personal and professional life as it documents his transition from theism, to deism, to agnosticism. Supportive of both evolution and religion, Paradise Lost tells the story of one man's struggle to comprehend a world explained both by religion and by the science that bears his name."

All are invited to attend.

Student survey – NSSE

Many Augsburg first-year and senior students have received e-mail invitations to take part in the National Survey of Student Engagement, or NSSE. We are hoping for a strong response rate and encourage everyone who is contacted to participate. The survey takes about twenty minutes to complete. Over 1000 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada use NSSE to better understand and evaluate student-faculty interactions, campus environment, and a range of educational experiences. If you have any questions about the project, please contact Jay Phinney at phinney@augsburg.edu.

"Sacred Choices and Abortion" screening

ALL ARE WELCOME to attend this month's Feminist Film Fridays series. We will be screening the documentary, "Sacred Choices and Abortion: 10 New Things to Think About," on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3:30pm. Meet in the Women's Resource Center (Sverdrup 207). If there are too many people for the WRC, we will move to Science 123.

The film runs about 1 hour and then there will be a discussion following the film.

"Sacred Choices and Abortion: 10 New Things to Think About" explores the "big lie"…that religion is opposed to a woman's right to choose. Ten insightful segments feature scholars from major faith traditions-Christian, Muslim and Jewish-as well as women and girls whose lives have been forever changed by abortion. Both thoughtful and dramatic, "Sacred Choices and Abortion" radically reframes the debate over reproductive rights in our highly religious culture.

ALL ARE WELCOME! Bring your friends! FREE!

Friday, Feb. 20, 3:30pm, WRC

Competing in his first collegiate pentathlon, Horkey finished in fifth place with a school-record 2,921 points, setting personal-best performances in four of the five events, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.15 seconds. Magnuson named MIAC Player of the Week

Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson named MIAC Women's Hockey Player of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/021709magnuson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/17/09) -- Augsburg College forward Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Player of the Week for her performance in Augsburg's weekend series against St. Mary's University, it was announced on Monday.

In Friday's 4-2 Augsburg win at St. Mary's, Magnuson scored the Auggies' final goal on a power-play marker in the second period, adding an assist for a two-point night. In Saturday's 2-2 overtime tie, Magnuson scored both Augsburg goals.

On the season, Magnuson leads the team with 16 points (seven goals, nine assists). The lone senior on the squad, Magnuson has 96 career points (63 goals, 33 assists) in 96 career games, and is now five goals away from tying Augsburg's career record for goals, 68, set by Angie Rieger (1998-2001). She is four points away from becoming the third Augsburg player to reach the 100-point plateau; the school record of 137 points was set by Lauren Chezick (2002-05).

Magnuson was also recently picked as one of 68 finalists for selection to compete in the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held at the Men's Division I Frozen Four in Washington, D.C., on April 10.

Magnuson has shined in two sports as an Augsburg student-athlete -- women's hockey and softball. In hockey, Magnuson has earned All-MIAC first-team honors each of her first three seasons -- one of just three Class of 2009 women's hockey players in the conference that can make that claim. In softball, Magnuson is one of only two incoming seniors in the MIAC to have earned All-MIAC first-team honors in each of their first three seasons. She also earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Midwest Region third-team honors in 2008. A versatile player who has seen action at three positions -- first base, second base and pitcher -- in her career, Magnuson enters the 2009 season with a .379 career batting average with 74 runs scored, 17 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs and 30 RBI, along with 42 stolen bases.

Augsburg (5-17-1 overall, 2-13-1 MIAC) completes its 14th season of women's hockey this weekend with a two-game series against St. Olaf. Friday's (2/20) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Saturday's (2/21) game is at 2 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
