Security and Facilities Announcements

Last chance to register for work order training

As many of you may know, the Facilities Management Department implemented a new work order system at the beginning of this school year. After a few months of testing the system out on some high-volume work requesters, we are now ready to roll it out to the rest of the Augsburg faculty and staff. This new work order system allows all faculty and staff to submit and track the progress of their own work requests via Augnet.

To find out how to use the new work request system, Facilities Management will be holding 16, half-hour information/training sessions on Tuesday, February 17th and Wednesday, February 18th. Please email adamsth@augsburg.edu or call Terri at x1566 to sign up for one of the half-hour sessions listed below…space is limited for each time frame.

Teaching and Learning

Faculty scholarship roundtables 2009

Thursday 26th March
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission."

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL web page, www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13th

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

World Visions book group

To Augsburg students, staff and faculty: We invite you to join the World Visions book group, which is scheduled for March. To coincide with the 21st annual Peace Prize Forum on climate change, we will read "The Firecracker Boys," by Dan O’Neill.

"Firecracker Boys: H-Bombs, Inupiat Eskimos, and the Roots of the Environmental Movement," by Dan O'Neill

In 1958, Edward Teller, father of the H-bomb, unveiled his plan to detonate six nuclear bombs off the Alaskan coast to create a new harbor. However, the plan was blocked by a handful of Eskimos and biologists who succeeded in preventing massive nuclear devastation potentially far greater than that of the Chernobyl blast. The Firecracker Boys is a story of the U.S. government's arrogance and deception, and the brave people who fought against it-launching America's environmental movement. As one of Alaska's most prominent authors, Dan O'Neill brings to these pages his love of Alaska's landscape, his skill as a nature and science writer, and his determination to expose one of the most shocking chapters of the Nuclear Age. (Perseus Books Group)

In addition to O’Neill's book, we will discuss the transcript "Planting the Future" from the public radio show Speaking of Faith. Krista Tippett interviews the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and environmental activist Wangari Maathai.

We will meet on two Wednesdays, March 4th and 18th, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Marshall room. Mark your calendars now and RSVP to reserve your place in the conversation. (fagen@augsburg.edu ) The first twelve people to commit will receive a complimentary book, thanks to funding from WorkCulture@Augsburg.

Looking forward to your participation,
Lynn Ellingson and Kathy Fagen

International partners hosting

Not sure who you’re going to live with next year? Perhaps your roommates for 2009-2010 are coming from another country! If you’re interested in becoming an international partners host, please pick up an application available in both residence life offices.

International hosts are Augsburg students, living in Mortensen Hall, who agree to live with international students and provide a welcoming environment. Benefits of being an international host include:
-Learning about other cultures
-Giving back to the Augsburg community
-Helping someone transition to Augsburg College
-Skipping lottery by signing your contract early
-Moving in early (and missing the rush!) to help your roommates transition
