After a few months of testing the system out on some high-volume work requesters, we are now ready to roll it out to the rest of the Augsburg faculty and staff. This new work order system allows all faculty and staff to submit and track the progress of their own work requests via Augnet.

Custodial services announces a change in service

Augsburg College Custodial Services has been researching ideas of how to better serve the College. It is important for us to consider and make changes to remain sustainable in tough economic times. From the research conducted, we have found that across the country many higher education institutions are focusing more of their cleaning operations using the day cleaning model. Switching to a day operation offers many advantages for the College as well as the custodial crew.

Most significantly we will be integrating a very diverse part of our workforce into the Augsburg Community. Individuals working in the late evening hours do not have the opportunity to interact with students, faculty and staff in the same way that they will be able to during the day. Moving to the primary day model will allow many of our individuals the opportunity to spend more quality time with their families.

It is more efficient in some respects to clean during the day simply based upon visual awareness. Currently, we are structured to have a small crew here during the day. This leaves us with enough crew to do cleaning in residence halls and a few, highly-visible spaces throughout campus. With the new structure we will be able to keep restrooms and classrooms throughout campus clean all day long. This is a critical piece of the plan to provide consistently clean spaces throughout the entire campus for students, faculty and staff.

The change will take place on or about May 15th. The reason for the change on this date is to provide optimal implementation time to prepare for the upcoming school year. The additional staff during the days will also decrease our dependence on outside contractors to do more of our summer projects.

Part of our planning process is considering a day model that Carleton College is already using. Carleton has been doing day cleaning for several years and is considered an expert on day cleaning. Another critical piece to day cleaning will be the planning with Directors, Managers, and Professors of when we will be able to clean their areas and not be a distraction. This is a very exciting time in the custodial department and we are excited at this opportunity to provide a better service and bring more individuals interactively into the Augsburg Community.

World Visions book group

To Augsburg students, staff and faculty: We invite you to join the World Visions book group, which is scheduled for March. To coincide with the 21st annual Peace Prize Forum on climate change, we will read The Firecracker Boys, by Dan O’Neill.

"Firecracker Boys: H-Bombs, Inupiat Eskimos, and the Roots of the Environmental Movement," by Dan O'Neill

"In 1958, Edward Teller, father of the H-bomb, unveiled his plan to detonate six nuclear bombs off the Alaskan coast to create a new harbor. However, the plan was blocked by a handful of Eskimos and biologists who succeeded in preventing massive nuclear devastation potentially far greater than that of the Chernobyl blast. The Firecracker Boys is a story of the U.S. government's arrogance and deception, and the brave people who fought against it-launching America's environmental movement. As one of Alaska's most prominent authors, Dan O'Neill brings to these pages his love of Alaska's landscape, his skill as a nature and science writer, and his determination to expose one of the most shocking chapters of the Nuclear Age." (Perseus Books Group)

In addition to O’Neill’s book, we will discuss the transcript “Planting the Future” from public radio’s show Speaking of Faith. Krista Tippett interviews the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and environmental activist Wangari Maathai.

We will meet on two Wednesdays, March 4th and 18th, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Marshall room. Mark your calendars now and RSVP to reserve your place in the conversation. ( fagen@augsburg.edu ) The first twelve people to commit will receive a complimentary book, thanks to funding from WorkCulture@Augsburg.

Looking forward to your participation,
Lynn Ellingson and Kathy Fagen

Student survey – NSSE

Many Augsburg first-year and senior students have received e-mail invitations to take part in the National Survey of Student Engagement, or NSSE. We are hoping for a strong response rate and encourage everyone who is contacted to participate. The survey takes about twenty minutes to complete. Over 1000 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada use NSSE to better understand and evaluate student-faculty interactions, campus environment, and a range of educational experiences.
