The Perfect Storm: Today's Financial Crisis

The Perfect Storm: A Historical Perspective on the Many Elements of the Present Financial Crisis

With the new administration set to take office on January 20th, one of the most pressing questions will be how to tackle the current crisis in the financial markets. While individual pieces of the crisis (i.e. "sub-prime" mortgages) have received attention from media outlets, the full depth and breadth of the crisis has been more difficult to fit into a 90 second soundbite.

Christopher Annand, a recent Augsburg MBA graduate and Compliance Officer for Ameriprise Financial, will join the January MBA information session to share his views of the crisis in a different way. Using a unique history tour of regulatory, economic and industry events, told through "plain-language" explanations, Mr. Annand will weave the pieces together and show how this “perfect storm” exploded this fall, along with his thoughts on where the administration should focus their attention in the coming months.

Christopher Annand
Christopher Annand is a Compliance Officer and Manager with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis, charged with enforcing the firm’s Code of Ethics for all employees. He has served with Ameriprise for over 10 years and holds his Series 7, 63 and 24 registrations with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA, formerly known as the NASD).

Mr. Annand recently graduated from the Augsburg MBA program and received his undergraduate degree from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, MN. In addition to these education pursuits, he will soon complete his CRCP certification (Certified Regulatory Compliance Professional) through the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Christopher lives with his wife Jennifer and son Noel is Shakopee, Minnesota.

Members of the Augsburg community are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Kathy Fagen at fagen@augsburg.edu or 612.330.1774.

Date: January 20, 2009
Time 5:30 - 7:00 PM
Location: Oren 114

He Qi in Chapel on Jan. 21 and His Art in Gage

Augsburg College continues the Vocatio Chapel Series on "Faith & the Imagination: The Call to the Arts" with renowned Chinese Christian painter, He Qi. He Qi is currently featured in the Gage Gallery in Oren Gateway with his exhibition, "Look Toward the Heavens" until February 15. He will also be speaking in chapel on January 21 at 10:20 in the chapel.

He Qi has been committed to the artistic creation of modern Chinese Christian art since 1983. He hopes to help change the "foreign image" of Christianity in China by using artistic language, and, at the same time, to supplement Chinese art the way Buddhist art did in ancient times. In his works, He Qi has blended together Chinese folk customs and traditional Chinese painting techniques created an artistic style of color-on-paper painting.

The opening reception for "Look Toward the Heavens" is Friday, January 16, 5:30-7:30 at the Gage Gallery. The Vocatio Chapel is January 21 at 10:20 in the Hoversten Chapel. A lunch will be held following chapel at 11:00. Anyone interested in eating lunch with He Qi should contact Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu for an RSVP.

Light Box Therapy and S.A.D.

Counseling and Health Promotion and a representative from Light Therapy Products, Inc. will be tabling on Thursday 1/15 from 11:30 - 1:00 p.m. in Christensen Center. We will have information on Seasonal Affective Disorder which is a specific type of depression that reoccurs at specific times of the year typically in late winter through early spring.

One way of treating S.A.D. is through exposure to bright light which can be provided through use of a light box. Paul Hamel from Light Therapy Products will have sample of a variety of light boxes individuals may be interested in purchasing if interested.

CCHP also has a light box in a study kiosk on the third floor of Lindell Library in the northeast corner (facing the Chapel) with information on its use and seasonal affective disorder. The light boxes are ideally used in the early morning or late afternoons each day.

For more information, stop by our table or feel free to call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 and set up an appointment to see one of our counselors -- the counseling sessions are FREE for Augsburg students.
