Faison, DeGroot, Holman Named Scholar All-Region

Augsburg's Felicia Faison, Maggie DeGroot named to NSCAA/Adidas Division III Scholar All-Central Region women's soccer teams
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/122308wsoccer.html

MINNEAPOLIS (12/23/08) -- Augsburg College's Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III Scholar All-Central Region women's soccer second team, while teammates Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./West HS) and Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) were honorable-mention selections, it was announced on Monday.

An accounting major with a 3.74 grade-point average, Faison was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 second team this season. A defender, Faison was named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-Central Region first team this season. She also earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors, after earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors each of the previous two seasons.

Considered one of the top defenders in school history, Faison has been a mainstay on the outside defense for Augsburg, starting each of the 73 games Augsburg played the last four seasons. She finished with one goal and five assists for seven points in her career, and has been part of a defense that has allowed just 53 goals (0.69 goals-against-average) in her career, along with claiming 37 team shutouts.

A goalkeeper, DeGroot is a health fitness major with a 3.34 grade-point average. One of the best goalkeepers in school history, DeGroot has rewritten the Auggie record book at the position. She finished her career holding the Augsburg career records for goalkeeper wins (37-19-16), career goals-against-average (0.68), shutouts (36) and career win-loss percentage (.627). She has appeared in 72 career games and claimed 401 saves with an .887 save percentage. Each of her four seasons have put her in the top-10 categories in single-season wins, goals-against-average, win-loss percentage and shutouts, including a single-season record 10 shutouts in both 2006 and 2008. This season, DeGroot finished with a 10-4-4 record with 10 shutouts, an .893 save percentage and a 0.59 goals-against-average (30th-best among NCAA Division III goalkeepers).

DeGroot was an NSCAA/Adidas Division III All-Central Region second-team honoree this year. DeGroot earned All-MIAC honors four times -- being named All-MIAC first-team in 2007 and 2008, while earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2005 and 2006. DeGroot was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team for the third straight year.

A defender, Holman is a religion and psychology major with a 3.93 grade-point average. Holman was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 first team this season, and has earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors each of the last two years.

Holman finished her junior campaign with two goals and four assists for eight points, including one game-winning goal and a game-tying goal, in her first full year as a defender after converting from forward to defense midway through last season. In her career (53 games, 53 starts), Holman has seven goals and eight assists for 22 career points.

The three Auggies were leaders of one of the top defenses in the MIAC this season. Augsburg allowed just 12 goals in the regular season -- second-lowest among MIAC teams in overall statistics -- with a conference-high 10 shutouts. Augsburg's 0.63 team goals-against-average this season was 31st-best among NCAA Division III teams.

Under 10th-year head coach Mike Navarre, Augsburg's women's soccer team finished 10-4-4 overall, 5-2-4 in MIAC play in 2008. The 10 victories marked Augsburg's fifth double-digit victory season in the last seven years.

Winford Named to D3football.com All-America Team

Augsburg's Royce Winford named to D3football.com All-America first team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/122008winford.html

MINNEAPOLIS (12/20/08) -- For the second straight season, Augsburg College football player Royce Winford (SR, Brookyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) earned D3football.com All-America honors, this year being named to the first team as a wide receiver, it was announced on Saturday. Winford, a wide receiver/cornerback, was selected to the All-America squad by the staff of D3football.com, a national website that covers NCAA Division III football.

The honor is the latest for Winford, who was also named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year this season. He also earned D3football.com All-West Region first-team honors for the second straight year. Winford was a second-team honoree in 2007.

It marks the sixth time that an Augsburg player has earned All-America honors from D3football.com since the site began awarding All-America honors in 1999. Winford joins punter Nick Schlieman as the only Auggies to earn D3football.com All-America honors twice; Schlieman was an honorable-mention honoree in both 2003 and 2005. Linebacker Mike Matson was a third-team honoree in 2005, and defensive back Jake Kern was a second-team honoree in 1999.

This season, Winford caught 93 passes for 1,139 yards, his second straight 1,000-yard receiving season and the fifth-most receiving yards in a single season in school history. Winford tied his single-season school record with 16 touchdowns. He finished his career with 247 catches for 3,282 yards -- both totals second-most in school history, and tied Augsburg legend Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98) for the school's career records for both overall touchdowns (41) and receiving touchdowns (40). Playing on defense for the first time in his career, Winford finished with four interceptions, three pass breakups and 11 tackles (eight solo) as a cornerback.

Nationally, Winford stands fourth among NCAA Division III receivers in receptions per-game (9.30), seventh in receiving yards per-game (113.90), 12th in total receiving yardage (1,139) and 23rd in scoring (98 points, 9.80 points per-game).

In MIAC overall statistics, Winford led the conference in receiving yardage per-game and scoring, while standing second in receptions per-game, third in all-purpose yardage and sixth in interceptions. In league games-only, Winford led the league in scoring (76 points) and receiving yardage (944), while standing second in receptions per-game (75, 9.38 per-game) and receiving yardage per-game (118.0 yards per-game), fourth in all-purpose yardage per-game (120.1) and sixth in interceptions (3).

Under fourth-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play, duplicating its record from 2007. Augsburg opened its season with four straight victories, including its second win in a row over nationally-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) in nonconference play, a 30-24 overtime win on Sept. 13.

Hildebrandt Named Scholar All-American/All-Region

Augsburg's Alex Hildebrandt named to NSCAA/Adidas Division III Scholar All-American and Scholar All-North/Central Region teams
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/122308hildebrandt.html

MINNEAPOLIS (12/23/08) -- Augsburg College men's soccer player Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III Scholar All-America team as a College Division first-team recipient, it was announced on Tuesday. Hildebrandt was also named to the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-North/Central Region men's soccer squads.

A finance major with a 3.86 grade-point average, Hildebrandt is Augsburg's first-ever NSCAA Division III Scholar All-America selection and the award marks his latest academic honor. Hildebrandt was also named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American third-team honoree this year, in addition to earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team honors.

This season, Hildebrandt earned nearly every major honor a collegiate men's soccer player can achieve. He earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors, in addition to earning NSCAA/Adidas Division III All-America second-team and NSCAA/Adidas All-Far West Region first-team honors.

A defender, Hildebrandt finished second on the Augsburg men's soccer team in scoring, with four goals and six assists for 14 points, including one game-winning goal and a penalty-kick goal. In his career at Augsburg (54 games, 52 starts), Hildebrandt has 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points, including three game-winning goals. Hildebrandt was a leader of an Augsburg squad that allowed just 13 goals this season (0.52 team goals-against-average) with 13 shutouts -- totals all second-best among MIAC teams this year. Augsburg's 0.52 team GAA was ninth-best among NCAA Division III teams this season, and its shutout total was 14th-best.

Under fifth-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished 12-4-7 overall, 7-2-1 in MIAC play, qualifying for the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the first time in school history. The Auggies reached the "Sweet Sixteen" round of the NCAA tournament this season, while also reaching the MIAC men's soccer tournament for the second time in the last three seasons.
