CTL Night at the Theatre

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Nov. 8, 2008, 7 p.m. performance of Eurydice directed by Martha Johnson. According to Martha Johnson, Sarah Ruhl is one of the "hottest" playwrights in America at the moment, and this play in particular has been a hit in New York and at several other theaters as well. It's a contemporary take on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but from Eurydice's point of view. We're really lucky to have been able to obtain the rights to the play, and I'm pretty sure we're the first college or University in the Twin Cities to produce it." One reviewer stated, " [The Orpheus/Eurydice] tale. . .is an enduringly appealing story of the tremendous power of love, and its fragility. . . .The story’s scope is widened to embrace not just romantic love—which comes in for some gentle mockery—but also the bond between a father and a daughter, depicted here as a force as elemental and sustaining as that other, oft-rhapsodized kind. . . .[Eurydice] is like a dream in which strange events take on unaccountably powerful meaning.”

To reserve your free ticket please contact Terry Martin at x1229. There will be a reception after the performance.

Tickets are now on sale for Eurydice, directed by Martha Johnson.
Available performance dates are:

In this poignant and enchanting play, Sarah Ruhl (Pulitzer Prize nominee and MacArthur genius grant winner) presents her contemporary take on the ancient Greek tale of Eurydice and Orpheus. Written after her father's death, Ruhl meditates with delicacy and insight on Eurydice's painful decision whether to remain with her father in the Underworld, or to return with her love Orpheus to the land of the living. We enter a surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream, where both author and audience swim in the magical and thrilling flow of the unconscious. --The New Yorker

Tickets are now on sale for
$10 for General Public
$8 for ACTC faculty and staff
$5 for non-Augsburg students and

Three Auggies Named Academic All-District Soccer

Augsburg's Alex Hildebrandt, Whitney Holman, Felicia Faison named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 soccer teams

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/110308academic.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/3/08) -- Augsburg College soccer players Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS), Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 teams for men's and women's soccer, it was announced recently.

Hildebrandt was named to the first team in men's soccer, while Holman earned first-team honors in women's soccer. Faison was named as a second-team selection in women's soccer. Hildebrandt earned Academic All-District honors for the second straight year, after earning second-team honors last season. Holman and Faison are both first-time Academic All-District honorees.

A defender, Hildebrandt is a finance major with a 3.86 grade-point average. He currently stands second on the Augsburg men's soccer team in scoring, with four goals and six assists for 14 points, including one game-winning goal and a penalty-kick goal. His six assists rank fifth-most among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall statistics, and is a leader of a defense that has allowed just 10 goals in 18 regular-season games, with 10 shutouts -- both totals second-best among MIAC teams. In his two seasons at Augsburg (49 games, 47 starts), Hildebrandt has 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points, including three game-winning goals. He earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2006.

Augsburg's men's soccer team currently stands at 10-3-5 overall, 7-2-1 in MIAC play. The Auggies earned the No. 3 seed in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs, qualifying for the playoffs for the second time in the last three years. The Auggies will travel to face No. 2-seed Gustavus in a playoff semifinal on Tuesday (11/4) at 2 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.

A defender, Holman is a religion and psychology major with a 3.93 grade-point average. Holman finished her junior season with two goals and four assists for eight points, including one game-winning goal and a tying goal off a corner kick with one second remaining in regulation time in the Auggies' 2-1 overtime loss at Macalester last Friday. A player who converted from forward to defense midway through last season, Holman was an All-MIAC honorable-mention honoree last year. In her career (53 games, 53 starts), Holman has seven goals and eight assists for 22 career points.

Also a defender, Faison is an accounting major with a 3.74 grade-point average. Faison was a leader of an Auggie defense that allowed just 12 goals in the regular season -- second-lowest among MIAC teams in overall statistics -- with a conference-high 10 shutouts. An All-MIAC honorable-mention honoree in both 2006 and 2007, Faison started all 73 games in her career, with one goal and five assists for seven career points. Faison is a team co-captain this season.

Augsburg's women's soccer team finished 10-4-4 overall, 5-2-4 in MIAC play in 2008. The 10 victories marked Augsburg's fifth double-digit victory season in the last seven years.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is part of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the district team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.

First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America soccer teams will be announced on Nov. 18-19.
