Questions and Answers About Depression
1. Is depression a mental illness?
Yes, depression is a serious, but treatable, mental problem. It is a medical problem not a personal weakness.

It is also very common. Major depression affects about 6.7% of the U.S. population over age 18, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Everybody at one point or another will feel sadness as a reaction to loss, grief, or injured self-esteem, but clinical depression, called "major depressive disorder" or "major depression" by doctors, is a serious medical illness that needs professional diagnosis and treatment.

9. Will someone who has had depression get it again?
Having experienced an episode of depression does put a person at greater risk for future episodes, but not everyone who has recovered from depression will experience it again. Sometimes depression is triggered by a major life event, illness, or a combination of factors particular to a certain place and time. Getting the proper treatment for the correct amount of time is crucial to recovery and in helping prevent or identify any future depression.

CTL Night at the Theater

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Nov. 8, 2008, 7 p.m. performance of Eurydice directed by Martha Johnson. According to Martha Johnson, Sarah Ruhl is one of the "hottest" playwrights in America at the moment, and this play in particular has been a hit in New York and at several other theaters as well. It's a contemporary take on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but from Eurydice's point of view. We're really lucky to have been able to obtain the rights to the play, and I'm pretty sure we're the first college or University in the Twin Cities to produce it." One reviewer stated, " [The Orpheus/Eurydice] tale. . .is an enduringly appealing story of the tremendous power of love, and its fragility. . . .The story’s scope is widened to embrace not just romantic love—which comes in for some gentle mockery—but also the bond between a father and a daughter, depicted here as a force as elemental and sustaining as that other, oft-rhapsodized kind. . . .[Eurydice] is like a dream in which strange events take on unaccountably powerful meaning.”

To reserve your free ticket please contact Terry Martin at x1229. There will be a reception after the performance.

Community Organizing with Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry and the Lilly Grant are teaming up to sponsor some workshops on faith-based community organizing. Our first session is next Thursday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Century Room (NOTE THE CHANGE). We will be learning from Lyle Griner, National Director of Peer Ministry, about inviting and welcoming.

Many of us spend time working in organizations across the campus that are dear to our heart, but sometimes we have a hard time getting the message across to others. This time will be spent learning how to approach folks, invite them into programs or activities, and make folks feel welcome.

All are welcome to attend. These will help your organizations greatly!

Community Shares and The United Way

The Greater Twin Cities United Way reminds us that together, we can accomplish more than any single group can on its own. Last year, thanks in part to our giving, more than 4700 children ages 5 and under received dental services through United Way Bright Smiles.

Through Community Shares Minnesota, our gifts go far as well. Per pay period, here's the impact you can have within our community: $10 provides six counseling sessions with a bilingual licensed social worker, allowing access to treatment for isolation and depression. (West Side Community Health Services)

Come hear more about what a difference we can make during our Community Time on Tuesday! Questions? Feel free to contact me at ext. 1525 or daniels@augsburg.edu

Tickets on Sale Now for Eurydice

Tickets are now on sale for Eurydice, directed by Martha Johnson.
Available performance dates are:
October 31, and November 1, 6 and 8 at 7 p.m.
and Nov 2, 8 and 9 at 2 p.m.

In this poignant and enchanting play, Sarah Ruhl (Pulitzer Prize nominee and MacArthur genius grant winner) presents her contemporary take on the ancient Greek tale of Eurydice and Orpheus. Written after her father's death, Ruhl meditates with delicacy and insight on Eurydice's painful decision whether to remain with her father in the Underworld, or to return with her love Orpheus to the land of the living. We enter a surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream, where both author and audience swim in the magical and thrilling flow of the unconscious. --The New Yorker

Tickets are now on sale for
$10 for General Public
$8 for ACTC faculty and staff
$5 for non-Augsburg students and
$2 for Augsburg students and children under 12
All Augsburg students need to bring their student ID.
