Disability Awareness Month Information

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Facts about learning disabilities
• Fifteen percent of the U.S. population, or one in seven Americans, has some type of learning disability, according to the National Institutes of Health.
• Difficulty with basic reading and language skills are the most common learning disabilities. As many as 80% of students with learning disabilities have reading problems.
• Learning disabilities often run in families.
• Learning disabilities should not be confused with other disabilities such as mental retardation, autism, deafness, blindness, and behavioral disorders. None of these conditions are learning disabilities. In addition, they should not be confused with lack of educational opportunities like frequent changes of schools or attendance problems. Also, children who are learning English do not necessarily have a learning disability.
• Attention disorders, such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities often occur at the same time, but the two disorders are not the same.
Common learning disabilities
• Dyslexia – a language-based disability in which a person has trouble understanding written words. It may also be referred to as reading disability or reading disorder.
• Dysgraphia – a writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letters or write within a defined space.
• Auditory and Visual Processing Disorders – sensory disabilities in which a person has difficulty understanding language despite normal hearing and vision.
• Nonverbal Learning Disabilities – a neurological disorder which originates in the right hemisphere of the brain, causing problems with visual-spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluative and holistic processing functions.

2008 Presidential Holiday Procedure

As you know, President Pribbenow announced five paid Presidential Holidays for staff in addition to the three official paid holidays (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day). The Presidential Holidays must be taken between December 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009. The following explains the guidelines and procedures for staff requesting and reporting the additional holidays.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

How can I request the President Holidays?
•See your supervisor. Your supervisor is coordinating the support needs of your area with your divisional vice president. Your supervisor must pre-authorize and pre-schedule your request accordingly so that our campus remains open and accessible.

When can I take these days?
•Between December 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009
•Days must be used in whole day increments
•Preferential consideration will be given for December 26, 29-30-31 and January 2
•Time not used will expire and there is no accrual for this time, nor is overtime earned in a week when a Presidential Holiday is used

How do I report the Presidential Holidays used?
•Be sure to report the days used on your time sheet or absence report as "PH" for “Presidential Holiday”
•Submit the proper form to your supervisor for final approval
•If you work less than full-time, your paid time will be pro-rated based on your FTE (just like treatment of other holidays)

Reminders about Recent Emails Asking for Passwords

Over the past few weeks we've seen a few emails sent to campus email addresses asking for your passwords. These are commonly known as phishing scams. These often take the form of emails that look legitimate but are asking for personal information, often for "verification." These emails are trying to "bait" you to give up personal information (that's why phishing sounds like fishing).

The best thing to do is to just delete them. If you're not sure if an email is legitimate, faculty and staff can always contact their LFC and students can contact the Tech Desk ( 612-330-1400, techdesk@augsburg.edu ) to ask.

Here are some general rules to keep in mind:

- The Augsburg IT department would never send out a generic email asking for your password, username, or date of birth.

- If it sounds suspicious, then it probably is a scam.

- Emails from a .com address would not be from Augsburg.
