Security and Facilities Announcements

Heating Season Temperatures

Augsburg Facilities Management has completed the process of bringing up all of the heating systems on campus.

Keeping in mind that the cost of energy will be significantly higher this heating season, and that we are all putting into place measures to conserve the College’s financial and energy resources, we will be cutting back on building temperatures this season along with using our energy management system [EMS] more aggressively to control heating during occupied and unoccupied time periods.

During the heating season and during operational hours we will attempt to maintain room temperatures between 68-70 degrees F.

If this temperature seems too cool for you, please dress accordingly to compensate for the difference.

Please do not augment the temperature difference within your space with space heaters. This defeats the effort for energy management and in many cases will stress the electrical capacity serving your area.

Thank you in advance for your efforts and understanding our initiative for conserving energy.

CTL Night at the Theater

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Nov. 8, 2008, 7 p.m. performance of Eurydice directed by Martha Johnson. According to Martha "Sarah Ruhl is one of the "hottest" playwrights in America at the moment, and this play in particular has been a hit in New York and at several other theaters as well. It's a contemporary take on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but from Eurydice's point of view. We're really lucky to have been able to obtain the rights to the play, and I'm pretty sure we're the first college or University in the Twin Cities to produce it." One reviewer stated, " [The Orpheus/Eurydice] tale. . .is an enduringly appealing story of the tremendous power of love, and its fragility. . . .The story’s scope is widened to embrace not just romantic love—which comes in for some gentle mockery—but also the bond between a father and a daughter, depicted here as a force as elemental and sustaining as that other, oft-rhapsodized kind. . . .[Eurydice] is like a dream in which strange events take on unaccountably powerful meaning.”

To reserve your free ticket please contact Terry Martin at x1229. There will be a reception after the performance.

Ann Garvey Takes Home the Prizes

At the Minnesota College Personnel Association (MCPA) conference on October 16th & 17th at the William Mitchell Law School, Ann Garvey was recognized in two meaningful ways.

Ann was bestowed the Linda Schrempp Alberg Outstanding Contribution to Minnesota Higher Education Award. In 1997, the Minnesota Contribution Award was renamed to honor Linda Schrempp Alberg, MCPA's president from 1983-84. The purpose of this award is to honor a professional whose work with students and service at one of Minnesota's institutions of higher education sets an example for all student development professionals. This award recognizes a practicing student affairs professional or a professional retired from a Minnesota institution of higher education. Ann is nowhere near retirement (thank goodness) and needs very little practice at what she does best.....serving students and being a role model to other professionals.

At the end of the conference, Ann's session was chosen as the most outstanding program of the conference. The session was entitled "Political Activism and Free Speech: What Can You Do and What Gets You in Trouble. In her collegial way, Ann invited four other colleagues to join her in the presentation although she could have done the entire session single handedly. The session highlighted student protests, marches, posters, FaceBook groups in a myriad of scenarios that asked the questions: What can you guide? What can you control? Where can you draw a line...and can you draw one? As one among a crowded room of participants, Ann et al walked us through scenarios that highlighted the first amendment. The session was exceptional and recognized as THE most outstanding program among 33 average ones.

Congratulations to Ann Garvey!!!

Recognizing Alcohol Poisoning -- Know What To Do

This is National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week and at over 1000 colleges and universities across the country campuses are addressing alcohol abuse and raising awareness about this important topic. This year's theme is U Decide and encourages students to make safe choices, take care of friends, secure safe rides, find alternative sources of entertainment and be empowered. Today we provide info on alcohol poisoning.

Excessive drinking can be hazardous to everyone's health! It can be particularly stressful if you are the sober one taking care of your drunk roommate, who is vomiting while you are trying to study for an exam. Some people laugh at the behavior of others who are drunk. Some think it's even funnier when they pass out. But there is nothing funny about the aspiration of vomit leading to asphyxiation or the poisoning of the respiratory center in the brain, both of which can result in death.

Critical Signs for Alcohol Poisoning

* Mental confusion, stupor, coma, or person cannot be roused.
* Vomiting.
* Seizures.
* Slow breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute).
* Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths).
* Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness.

What Should I Do If I Suspect Someone Has Alcohol Poisoning?

* Know the danger signals.
* Do not wait for all symptoms to be present.
* Be aware that a person who has passed out may die.
* If there is any suspicion of an alcohol overdose, call Augsburg Security at x1717 for help. Don't try to guess the level of drunkenness.

What Can Happen to Someone With Alcohol Poisoning That Goes Untreated?

* Victim chokes on his or her own vomit.
* Breathing slows, becomes irregular, or stops.
* Heart beats irregularly or stops.
* Hypothermia (low body temperature).
* Hypoglycemia (too little blood sugar) leads to seizures.
* Untreated severe dehydration from vomiting can cause seizures, permanent brain damage, or death.

Even if the victim lives, an alcohol overdose can lead to irreversible brain damage. Rapid binge drinking (which often happens on a bet or a dare) is especially dangerous because the victim can ingest a fatal dose before becoming unconscious.

Don't be afraid to seek medical help for a friend who has had too much to drink. Don't worry that your friend may become angry or embarrassed-remember, you cared enough to help. Always be safe, not sorry.

If you have other questions or would like to talk to someone at the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion, please call our office at 612-330-1707 to set up an appointment. All students receive 10 FREE counseling sessions a year so feel free to use this on campus resource.

Sexual Assault Support Groups

Many survivors of sexual assault have found that an important step on their healing journey is to participate in a sexual assault support group. The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion would like to help Augsburg students who have experienced sexual assault connect up to a free, confidential, professionally facilitated support group. Several wonderful resources are available in the community, some as near as a 6-minute bus ride. We are hoping to have a group on campus by spring semester (please let us know if you are interested by contacting Beth at x1136 or at carlson2@augsburg.edu).

The Aurora Center at the University of Minnesota is a center focused on supporting survivors of relationship violence; they are currently running a professionally facilitated support group for U of M and Augsburg college students (Augsburg contracts with the Aurora Center so that services for Augsburg students there are free). The time and day for the group is still being set (usually during the daytime) but will be starting up soon; the group is held in the Boynton Health building (about a 15 minute walk across the Washington Avenue Bridge on the U campus, or a 6 minute bus ride on Route 2C – pick up the bus at 23rd and Riverside; get off at Coffman Union; Boynton Health is just behind Coffman Union). If you are interested, please contact the group facilitator Jamie Tiedemann at 612-626-9958 for a group intake, and identify yourself as an Augsburg student.

The Rape and Sexual Abuse Center in south Minneapolis (2431 Hennepin Avenue S) has groups for survivors of sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. The free Women’s Rape Support Group is held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7pm; and a free Concerned Persons Support Group for family and friends is held on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm. Please call for a short phone intake, 612-374-9077.

The Sexual Violence Center in north Minneapolis (3757 Fremont Ave N) offers support groups for both survivors and concerned persons; they have evening groups for female survivors, male survivors, GLBT survivors, concerned persons (family & friends), and Healing Through the Arts. Facilitated by trained volunteers. Call 612-871-5111 for more info and to set up an intake.

Feel free to contact CCHP at 330-1707 for more info or for on-campus individual support around healing from sexual assault
