Study in Guatemala or El Salvador -- Apply by Oct. 1

You may have heard about two great opportunities to study abroad this January. But you may NOT know that the deadline to apply is this coming Wednesday, October 1. Contact our office or stop by to learn more about these exciting programs:

+ An American Indian Studies course on Indigenous Issues in Guatemala. Come explore contemporary issues faced by Mayan peoples and witness their enduring connection to land, language, and spirituality. This course can be taken as AIS 305 or AIS 490. It fulfills an elective in the Women’s Studies Major/minor and can serve as your Keystone.

+ A Religion course on Vocation and the Christian Faith in El Salvador. This program features a homestay with Salvadoran families, and focuses on the concept of vocation and the relationship of the Church to poverty, political oppression, and social change. REL 480 fulfills Religion major/minor requirements and can serve as your Keystone.

Top 10 reasons to study abroad on one of these programs:

1. Study abroad without missing a regular semester!

2. Enjoy warm weather in January and experience both rural and urban locations in Central America.

3. Fulfill your Augsburg Experience requirement!

4. It’s affordable! Financial Aid applies to study abroad – any grants, scholarships, loans, etc can be used to cover the costs.

5. Spanish language students can practice their comprehension and translation skills, since these programs feature meetings with native speakers. Professional translations are provided, so non-Spanish speakers are also encouraged to apply!

6. Full-time day students can take one of these study abroad courses and pay NO extra tuition (no overload fees in Spring semester).

7. Build strong new relationships and friendships with Augsburg faculty and your fellow students, as you live and learn together.

8. Both these programs can be used to fulfill your Keystone requirement!

9. Scholarships are available through the Center for Global Education. Visit their web site to learn more: www.augsburg.edu/global/its/scholarships.html

10. Experience a different culture, get outside the classroom, and stretch your mind in new directions. Learn by experiencing these countries, meeting local people, and hearing about their issues and perspectives.

So what are you waiting for? Visit our web site for information on advising hours and how to apply by October 1: www.augsburg.edu/augsburgabroad/

Recovery Month Tidbits

Wisdom to Know

To ease another’s heartache is to forget one’s own.

--Abraham Lincoln

Sometimes, in our self-centeredness, we fall into a pit of self-pity. Most of us have enough pain and heartache to feed a lifetime of self-pity if we choose to. We all have had our serious losses, stressful jobs, difficult family relationships, bad breaks, and unfair dealings with others. When we start to sink into excessive self-absorption and resentment or wallow in endless negativity, we may not even recognize what we are doing. The best way to climb out if this pit is to reach out to help others who have real needs.

We can volunteer at a school to help children learn to read, or visit people in nursing homes, or help clean up a riverbank, or help a disabled person buy groceries. When we focus too much on ourselves, we become narrow and negative, but when we bring help or relief to our community, we become connected and we have a purpose and mission that expands our world.

Today I will reach out to others with a helpful hand.

Composting is More than Just A Pile of Garbage

On September 22, Augsburg Dining, in a joint effort with Augsburg College, began composting upstairs in the commons. All of the food that is left over from our customers will be placed into special containers located adjacent to the trash receptacles. There will be posters up to help in the instruction of what is to go where. Over time, this effort will expand to the other retail food locations and then campus wide. The Augsburg community will be happy to know that the end product of this composting will return the the Augsburg community garden. So please look before you throw away that half eaten sandwich and see if it can't further our environmental awareness and give back to us all.

Free Tickets to David McCullough

My magic phone has rung again, and this time it is offering me 20 tickets to hear presidential author David McCullough speak at the State Theater on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Here's how the Hennepin Theater Trust (who is offering these tickets) is describing it:

David McCullough has been called a master of the art of narrative history. His books have been praised for their sweep, their literary distinction, and for their scholarship and insight into American life. Mr. McCullough is twice winner of the National Book Award and he received the Pulitzer Prize both for John Adams, and for his monumental Truman. In recognition of the election year, Mr. McCullough’s remarks will focus on the United States Presidency.

If you are interested in hearing Mr. McCullough's comments on the US Presidency, then you should send an e-mail to murray@augsburg.edu. I will give tickets until they have run out (there is a possibility I may get more, if there is demand for more than 20 tickets). E-mail as soon as you can.
