Lilly Program Fac Dev Grant -- Deadline Extended

Interested in leading a program abroad? Curious how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching, regardless of location? Please consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs. The purpose of the grant is to provide Augsburg faculty with an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. Experience the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2009, participate as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or attend one of the open trips that CGE advertises.

The deadline to apply has been extended to October 10!

All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).

The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2009, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under “Lilly Funding Applications.” The deadline has been extended - apply by October 10, 2008.

Individuals without a U card will be asked to sign-in at the door.
The event is free, and you do not need to pre-register to attend.

HOW TO PREPARE
Follow these tips to make the most of this event:

Look at the list of participating schools (see below) and check out their Web sites to identify programs that interest you. Prioritize your list of schools to make effective use of your time at the event. Dress appropriately: first impressions count! Business casual is the recommended attire. Bring questions for the schools (e.g., What are your course offerings?) and be prepared to answer questions (e.g., Why do you want to attend graduate school?). Bring a pen, and if you share your contact info, be sure to write legibly! Grad school recruiters sometimes mention they can't follow up with students because they can't read their writing. Consider bringing your own mailing labels to affix to forms.

Disability Awareness Month Information

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

The Faculty Room is a space for faculty and administrators at postsecondary institutions to learn about how to create classroom environments and academic activities that maximize learning for all students, including those with disabilities. Much of the content is duplicated in other publications, training materials, and web pages published by DO-IT. It includes six primary areas that address issues faced by postsecondary educators:

Accommodations and Universal Design
Strategies for creating (universal design) and modifying (accommodations) academic environments and activities to maximize the learning of students with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

Rights and Responsibilities
The rights and responsibilities of faculty, campus services, and students with disabilities regarding academic accommodations.

Faculty Resources
Resources to help instructors more fully include students with disabilities in course activities.

Faculty Presentations
Video, publications, and interactive presentations designed especially for postsecondary educators.

Resources for Trainers, Staff, and Administrators
Resources for staff and administrators who support faculty in making their academic offerings accessible to students with disabilities.

Nuruddin Farah: "The Power of Words"

On October 15th, Augsburg College will host the award-winning Somali writer, Nuruddin Farah. The event, “The Power of Words,” will include Farah’s reading from his latest novel, _Knots_, as well as time for discussion and book-signing.

Date: Wednesday, October 15th, 2008
Times:
6:00 – 7:30 p.m. - Reading and discussion
7:30 – 8:30 p.m. - Reception and book signing
Location:
Augsburg College
Hoversten Chapel in the Foss Center
625 22nd Avenue So., Minneapolis (corner of Riverside & 22nd Ave)

Mr. Farah is the author of ten novels, including _Knots_. His novels have been translated into more than twenty languages and have won numerous awards. Mr. Farah has been noted for his unique representation of the postcolonial experience in Africa; he depicts the vicissitudes of family life in the face of the withering effects of patriarchy, colonization, and state-sanctioned terror. His approach closes an important gap in the dominant anti-colonial discourse inspired by Frantz Fanon’s theories, which glossed over the hegemonic devastations of traditional African patriarchy.

Farah was named the 1998 laureate of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, “widely regarded as the most prestigious award after the Nobel” (_NYT_). Born in Baidoa, Somalia, Mr. Farah has lived in exile in many African countries, including Ethiopia, Gambia, Sudan, Uganda, and Nigeria. He now lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

According to Michele Levy in _World Literature Today_ (Sept/Oct 2007), through the “quest” of its remarkable heroine Cambara, Farah’s _Knots_ “explores the impact of diaspora and globalization on Somalis at home and abroad, portrays how civil war brands psyches and cities, and expands our distant vision of Mogadishu.”

This event is sponsored by the following Augsburg departments and organizations: Work Culture @ Augsburg, International Student Organization, Pan-Afrikan Center, English Department, Office of International Programs, Center for Service, Work and Learning, and World Visions Book Group.

2009 Insurance Re-enrollment Overview

As we enter the insurance benefits re-enrollment period for 2009, Human Resources would like to take the opportunity to provide you with an overview of Augsburg College’s goals and 2009 changes. With regard to medical and dental insurance, the College has two primary goals:

1) to keep balance between a) changing participant’s behavior by placing “first dollar cost” with the employee, and b) providing a plan that is rich enough to protect employees from financial distress if there is a large claim; and

2) to promote the health and wellbeing of our College community rather than only addressing increasing costs of coverage annually, year after year.

Many changes have been implemented over time to mitigate increases, including plan design and network changes, varying structure of prescription drug copays, and use of both self insured and fully insured plans. In the current medical insurance market, we have influenced positive changes in our medical insurance premiums by:

- Utilizing deductibles and prescription drug copays
- Adding a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
- Adding a Healthcare Savings Account (HSA)

The College began movement forward on this path three years ago: moving the medical plan from a ‘sick plan’ (meaning one only uses it when one is sick) to a ‘wellness plan’ --where the focus is on prevention so that in future years, potential premium incentives/savings could be offered and plan cost could be more predictable. Since 2005, we have provided two levels of deductible with a copayment structure for prescription drugs. The Benefits Advisory Committee (comprised of participants and users of our medical and dental plans) was initiated in 2007 and was consulted throughout this past year with specific attention given to the addition of a HDHP and HSA. This committee’s primary purpose is to advise management and:

- help employees gain better understanding of the issues facing the insurance market and Augsburg specifically,
- help both management and employees to better understand each other’s needs and Augsburg’s philosophy around insurance and other employee benefits, and
- advise how best to communicate changes to employees.

For 2009, we are pleased to announce there has been no change in plan structure for either the medical or dental insurance products. The medical benefits and prescription drug copayment plan structure will stay the same as in 2008. We will continue to offer the $600 and $1200 deductibles. While we anticipated as much as a 25% market increase, our prior changes and utilization allowed Augsburg to hold the overall 2009 plan increase to just under 15%. For 2009 we again are taking another step on this path by adding a HDHP option and HSA. For 2009, the dental plan received a 3.7% increase.

Please take time to review the attached materials on http://web.augsburg.edu/hr/2009_Benefits/2009BenefitsRe-EnrollmentDetails.pdf for instructions about re-enrollment for 2009, and please join us at group sessions for more information, questions and answers.
