Safe & Sober Mobilization Campaign May 19 to June 1, 2008

In Minnesota traffic crashes are the leading cause of death through age 44 and the leading cause of workplace death. During 2004-2006 in Minnesota there were 1,274 vehicle occupants killed in crashes and 658 were not wearing seat belts. The department of public safety estimates around half of those killed would have survived if they were buckled up. The Office of Traffic Safety estimates that increasing the belt use rate from 84 to 94 percent could safe 40 lives, prevent 855 injuries and save over $115 million annually. Join the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the Minnesota Network of Employers for Traffic Safety, law enforcement agencies and other businesses throughout the state in the effort to prevent these human and economic losses. Participate in the Safe and Sober Mobilization May 19 - June 1. The campaign is a combination of enforcement and public awareness activities, with the goal of raising Minnesota's seatbelt rate to record levels.

The Minnesota seat belt law for adults in the front seat is a secondary law — meaning you cannot be stopped for just not wearing a seat belt. There needs to be a different and primary reason for a stop.

The role of Minnesota Law Enforcement officers is to continue to enforce this life-saving law to avoid unnecessary deaths and costs.

Here is the penalty for not buckling up:

Penalties vary by jurisdiction, but a belt citation costs around $25 and can ramp up to as much as $115 dollars when factoring in court costs and administrative fees.

Minnesota Law Enforcement officers will also be enforcing child passenger safety laws. So we recommend you double-check your car seats and ensure they are secured tight enough and that you secure the harness straps tight as well.. Also make sure your child is in the correct child restraint based on their size. The most commonly ignored restraint, are booster seats. These seat lifts are meant for kids under 80 pounds and under 4-foot 9-inches. They help a seat belt fit properly.

Why are Officers enforcing seat belt use now?

May and the Memorial Day travel period is the traditional kick-off to the summer travel season. And the summer months are always are deadliest months on Minnesota roads.

People are more likely to speed which translates to more violent crashes.

With increased travel in the summer, people are often driving on unfamiliar roads. And on roads of uncertainties — including speeding, distracted and impaired drivers — the best defense you have is to buckle up.

There are three other things that are likely to save your life while on Minnesota roads:
Driver sober — never drive impaired.
Pay attention.
And drive at safe speeds.

Let's have safe travels — remember: "Click It or Ticket."

Want to be outside? Pick up trash along the river or dig into our community garden. Does your own space need some help? Get your team together and fix it up!

Fruit, granola bars, and water coolers will be provided. Bring your own reusable water containers (sippy cup, Nalgene bottle, canteen) and additional snacks if you're planning to burn a lot of calories.

Campus Beautification Day will be Wednesday, June 11, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. After a day of good old-fashioned work, all are invited to attend the staff senate picnic in Murphy Park at 1 p.m.

Tom Morgan Appointed to New Post

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Tom Morgan has been appointed as the inaugural executive director of the Center for Faith and Learning, effective June 1, 2008. Tom will partner with Dr. David Tiede, Christensen Chair in Religion and Vocation, Dr. Mark Tranvik, Director of the Lilly "Exploring Our Gifts Program," and Dr. Phil Quanbeck, chair of the Religion Department, to help establish the Center for Faith and Learning as the institutional home for the college's curricular, co-curricular and outreach programs that support the links between faith and learning. This new position replaces the staff position for the Center formerly held by John Knight.

Tom's experience at Augsburg as faculty member and institutional leader has prepared him well for this new role. As a business faculty member, Tom's work on organizational behavior and leadership has helped to shape both our undergraduate and graduate programs. In various vice presidential roles, Tom has led enrollment and planning efforts. In his current role as special assistant to the President, Tom has been primarily involved in managing the college's external relationships with Faith in the City (the consortium of Lutheran institutions active in service to the city), with neighborhood and community organizations, and with various church-related projects. This new role will bring Tom's academic and administrative experience to bear in helping to establish the Center for Faith and Learning as a signature program of the college's commitment to vocation and learning - a commitment that honors both Augsburg's legacy and its promise.

Tom will continue to work closely with me as an advisor on institutional planning, but his position as special assistant to the president will not be filled.

I also am pleased to report that Kathleen Tuckner, who has worked as a project manager for the President's office during the past two years also will move to a new role, involving various duties. She will support Tom Morgan in the Center for Faith and Learning, and also will provide staff support for Faith in the City (The Rev. Deb Hutterer, Executive Director) and for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and Festival (replacing Stephanie Stuart, who has resigned). I am grateful to Kathleen for her service to the President's office. Her position in my office will not be filled.

Please join me in congratulating Tom and Kathleen in their new positions, which promise to make a significant contribution to our common work.

Paul C. Pribbenow
President
