"11th Hour" Documentary and Cleaning Supplies

Urness goes GREEN

"11th Hour" is a newly released documentary about the global crisis our generation currently faces. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, this film highlights the biggest issues pressing our generation and the solutions that engineers and biologists alike are coming together to create. Not only does it greatly inform viewers, but it will all leave you with an optimistic sense that this generation is the most exciting generation to be a part of. It is this generation that gets to MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. The video will also finish with a discussion about the video and current solutions we can all do in to be part of the change.

After the video and discussion we will also be making ECO-FRIENDLY CLEANING SUPPLIES with eight different scents - just one practical solution.

Last Week to Submit Thoni Award Nominations

Faculty and staff are asked to nominate a graduating senior for the Richard J. Thoni Award by April 17, 2008.

This award honors a graduating senior student from the Weekend College (Twin Cities or Rochester) whose actions, commitments, and future aspirations most profoundly demonstrate a commitment to Augsburg's motto of "Education for Service."

In making a nomination, the nominator should provide their name and the name of the student they are nominating, and write a nomination entry including a response to the following questions:

1. As you consider the nominee's time at Augsburg, describe ways in which s/he has been called to service and how s/he has acted on this call.
2. As you consider the nominee's future aspirations, describe how the nominee's education as an adult learner will shape his/her service to others, in one or many roles (community member, parent, employee, citizen, etc.).

High Noon – AGRE SHOOTOUT @ HIGH NOON: Edor Nelson Athletic Field.
The Agre Shootout is to the Agre Challenge but slightly different since it will feature teams of students hurling a three-pound weight only 60 yards using whatever mechanical means possible.

3:30pm – THE SECOND GREAT LEFSE vs. LUTEFISK DEBATE: Marshall Room, Christensen Center.
A debate about The Truth: Is lutefisk better than lefse? Two teams debate making a case using their field of expertise. A distinguished panel of judges who know The Truth will rate the arguments on punctuality, elocution, and no-nonsene approach. Edible and inedible refreshments will be served. Debaters include: President Pribbenow and Doug Green (pro lutefisk) and Emiliano Chagill and Tracy Biebelnicks (pro lefse). Phil Adamo will be the moderator.

7:00pm – TOP GIRLS: Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, Foss Center
“Top Girls,” written by Caryl Churchill, takes the audience to a dinner party where women of history discuss the political and personal sacrifices women have made throughout history. Ticket reservations at 612-330-1257. [Ms. Engen ‘88, Theater]

Trip to Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Government Center

April 19, 2008

Enjoy a joint trip with Augsburg American Indian Studies and St. Thomas students to the Mille Lacs Government Center, Community and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum on the shores of beautiful Lake Mille Lacs. Learn more about one of our neighboring Ojibwe communities, their history, and culture. Our day will include a tour of the community and government center, and a visit to the Museum and Trading Post.

Cost per person is $7.00 for the museum fee. We have limited seats available (15 total) so sign up now.

Augsburg Honors Review Seeking Submissions

The Augsburg Honors Review, a new undergraduate journal, is seeking submissions from all disciplines for our 2009 issue. The goal of this academic publication is to exhibit outstanding work from Augsburg and ACTC students.

As the semester draws to a close and you finish your final projects, please consider submitting the work you are proud of. We offer you valuable experience in scholarly conversation and the publication process, not to mention the ability to call yourself "published" on your resume.

To submit your work, please send it to honrview@augsburg.edu and include the following information:

First and last names of all authors and faculty advisors
Name of the institution where the research was conducted (if other than Augsburg)
Academic division (Humanities, Social Sciences, or Natural Sciences)

Last week I sat down for a chat with Matt Eller, a.k.a. "Tent Dude," to talk about his project (see story at http://augnet.augsburg.edu). Poet Cary Waterman Is Published (Again)

English Department creative writing (poetry) professor Martha (Cary) Waterman has two poems appearing in the Winter 2008 Minnetonka Review. Her poems "Burning" and "Talking Weather in the New Year" were selected for inclusion among other works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submitted by writers from across the United States. A copy of the journal resides in the English Department office. Congratulations, Cary.

Sad Announcement, Please Help

It pains me to announce that late last week a member of the Augsburg community, Geoffrey Gill (chaplain-elect of the Pan-Afrikan Student Union) suffered a loss with the passing of his father. Services will be held on Friday, April 18 at Faith Tabernacle Gospel Church, 2025 N 4th St in Minneapolis. The Pan-Afrikan Center will be collecting donations on behalf of the Gill family. I am looking for assistance in caring for my husband who has stage-4 neck and face cancer. Bruce is an elder gentleman architect, 82, who loves life, family, his loft on the Mississippi. He has had radiation and chemo therapy. Presently battling pneumonia. He is coming home from 10 days of antibiotics at UofM Hospital, Fairview. I am looking for someone comfortable with administering meds via feeding tube, suctioning throat, helping with bathroom trips and generally keeping him comfortable. I would like to have help overnite from 10-7 several times a week, including weekends.

Free Tickets for National Geographic Live

My magic phone has been pretty quiet, but yesterday the silence was broken!

I have 20 tickets for National Geographic Live with photographer Sam Abell for THIS Thursday, April 17. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. As of this posting, I have two tickets left (with the possibility of getting more).

The Mississippi: A Photographer’s Journey

One of the world’s most highly respected photographers and public speakers, Sam Abell has had only one employer in his photography career -- National Geographic. Over the course of his 25-year career shooting for National Geographic he covered topics as varied as Leo Tolstoy, Lewis Carroll, the Civil War, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the Amazon, Australia, and Japan’s Imperial Palace. He has also written several books and exhibited his photography internationally at numerous galleries and museums, including the prestigious one-man show “Stay This Moment” at the International Center for Photography in Manhattan.
