World Visions Staff Book Club

Tomorrow, April 16, we will begin discussion of our fourth book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini (see description from Barnes and Noble below). The book club meeting will be held in the Cedar Room of Christensen Center from noon to 1:15 p.m.

The second meeting for this book will be on May 7, 2008 from noon to 1:15 p.m. - it will also be held in the Cedar Room.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made "The Kite Runner" a beloved classic, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is at once an incredible chronicle of 30 years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. A stunning accomplishment, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

We welcome you to contact us with your ideas or questions.

Respectfully,

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe

Eat Fresh and Fancy All Summer with a CSA Share

Interested in local, sustainable, nutritional, and affordable vegetables all summer long? Well it’ll be easy this summer here at Augsburg because two local CSA farms (see their info below) will be delivering boxes right to the Christensen Center each Thursday morning all season.

You begin by purchasing a share of a nearby organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, and each week through the summer they deliver a large box full of whatever is in season (lettuce, herbs, etc. in June, tomatoes, corn, melons, plenty more in September). It's more like buying stock in a company than purchasing food at a store. An average harvest will yield up to 25 pounds of produce per week. If that's too much, I can help you find someone to split the share with.

Not only is this great for the Augsburg community to have such easy access to this tasty, sustainably produced food, but it remedies the most common complaint CSA members have: too much food, too much waste, and the resulting compost guilt. Since we do have the Campus Kitchen here, anything you won't be able to handle will be prepared into the 1,500 meals we serve each month or distributed to the Brian Coyle food shelf. We have an opportunity here unlike any I have seen.

Below are the two farms that we will be working with this summer. We still need a few more people to commit (to reach a total of 10) for them to consider us as drop off site. Let me know very soon if you’d like to sign up, and thanks for supporting!

Option #1 - Ploughshare Farm
http://www.ploughsharefarm.com/
$525 for one 10-25 lb box per week for 18-20 weeks
Delivered Thursdays around noon
2.5 hours away, near Alexandria
Will donate 1 share to Campus Kitchen for every 10 new shares; has donated to us in past

Option #2 - Big River Farm (formerly May Farm)
http://www.mnfoodassociation.org/joinmayfarm.aspx
$485 for one 10-25 lb box per week for 18-20 weeks
Delivered Thursdays before 1 p.m.
45 minutes away, near Stillwater
Grown by Hmong and Latino immigrant farmers, organized under non-profit organization
Egg share available, half dozen per week throughout summer - $40

Three Auggies Named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society

Augsburg's Mueller, Weber and Welty named to National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/041408football.html

MINNEAPOLIS (4/14/08) -- Augsburg College football players Alan Mueller (SR, Savage, Minn./Breck HS), Jason Weber (SR, New Prague, Minn.) and John Welty (SR, Edina, Minn.) were named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society, honoring academic and athletic excellence, it was announced recently.

A total of 441 football student-athletes from 227 schools in all NCAA and NAIA divisions were named to the Hampshire Honor Society, an increase of more than 25 percent from the inaugural class in 2007. To qualify, student-athletes must be a starter or significant substitute in their last year of eligibility, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale), and meet all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

Mueller, a two-year starting offensive tackle, earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable-mention honors in 2007. He was part of an offensive line that helped the Auggies produce 4,247 yards of total offense (424.7 yards per-game) this season, while surrendering just 23 quarterback sacks. In his two seasons as a starting tackle, Weber was part of an offensive line that finished with 7,202 yards of total offense (360.1 yards per-game). Mueller also earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors in 2007. A psychology and business management major with a 3.56 GPA, Mueller has earned Academic All-MIAC honors in both 2006 and 2007.

Weber, a three-year starter at offensive tackle, earned All-MIAC second-team honors in 2007. He was part of a line that helped the Auggies produce 4,247 yards of total offense (424.7 yards per-game) this season, while surrendering just 23 quarterback sacks. In his three seasons as a starting tackle, Weber was part of an offensive line that finished with 10,301 yards of total offense (343.4 yards per-game). An accounting and finance major with a 3.86 GPA, Weber also earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 honors in football for the second straight year, this season being named to the first team. He was also named to the Academic All-MIAC squad in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Welty, a four-year letterwinner at linebacker, was a reserve this season for the Auggies, collecting five tackles (two solo) this season. He was voted as the Auggie football team's "Auggie Award" winner, the team's top honor for student-athlete character, by his teammates in 2007. Welty is a marketing major with a 3.24 GPA.

Under third-year head coach Frank Haege, the Auggie football team finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play this season, marking the first time Augsburg had reached the .500 mark since 2003 (5-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC). With its five victories this season, Augsburg also eclipsed its number of wins from the previous three seasons combined (4-26).
