Severe Weather Awareness Week

Flash Floods

On a National Level...
Floods claim nearly 200 lives annually, force 300,000 persons from their homes, and result in property damage in excess of 2 billion dollars. Characteristically, 75 percent of flash flood deaths occur at night with half of the victims dying in their automobiles or other vehicles. It may be difficult to believe, but many deaths occur when persons knowingly drive around road barricades indicating the road is washed out ahead.

Last Year in Minnesota and Wisconsin...
Disastrous flooding struck southeast Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin on August 18th and 19th. Eight people died that weekend... 7 in Minnesota and 1 in Wisconsin. Most deaths occurred in vehicles. A statewide record for 24-hour rainfall was set in Minnesota when 15.1 inches fell 1 mile south of Hokah. One other flood fatality occurred in Minnesota on September 20th, when a boy playing near a creek died on the east side of St Paul.

Are You Prepared?
Assume a thunderstorm produces 6 inches of rain in less than 6 hours time near your community. Storms of this magnitude or greater occur several times each year in the U.S. Would you know what action to take to protect yourself and the people who depend on you for safety? After a major flood event, one of the most common quotes from the survivors of the flood is the expression they did not believe it could happen to them or in their community.

Before the Flooding...
There is nothing anyone can do to prevent the occurrence of flash flood producing rainfall. However, by striving for sound flood plain zoning, developing an emergency action plan in advance of the disaster, purchasing flood insurance at least 30 days before the flooding, and being aware of the dangers associated with extremely heavy rainfall and flooding, there is a chance of decreasing the death toll and property damage that results from flash flooding.

Celebrate Earth Week at Silkesnas Preserve April 27

Rob and Lori Peterson invite you to come and take a walk in Silkesnas. They want you to feel the magic that lies in the pastoral-sounding name with deep Scandinavian ecological roots. After recently leaving his job of nearly 27 years doing research at 3M, Rob now has more time to follow his passion. Silkesnas (silk-es-nas) Nature Preserve is this passion; it is a private non-profit preserve providing programs to encourage leadership in sustainable practices.

Spring in the Valley 2008 at Silkesnas is an open-to-the-public celebration of Earth Week held on Sunday, April 27, 1-5 p.m. Programs are held out of doors, and walking on natural terrain of light difficulty is required. Visitors should plan to spend approximately two hours to take in all of the activities, including viewing the natural beauty of the area and visiting with and learning from the various subject matter experts volunteering at the Preserve.

Upon entering the preserve, guests will be invited to plant a tree on site. As guests travel through the Preserve, they will meet an agricultural economist presenting What’s (in) the Beef, a professional hydrologist from the United States Geological Survey (Water: It’s Underground That Matters), master beekeepers (The Buzz about Bees), a craftsman and wood artist(Earth Art), an environmental landscape company owner (Slingshot Prairie), and a local resident discussing her farm’s new installation of a 20 KW wind generator (And So It Blows). At 3pm, Kelly Cain, Director of the St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Development will present
" What is Sustainability?" in the Visitor Center/Horse Barn. Visitors are invited to pull up a seat at a picnic table or on a hay bale in the barn to relax with refreshments provided by Our Coffee Barn (http://ourcoffeebarn.com) who will be showcasing Nicaragua SHG Jinotega Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee!

New for 2008 is a Local Market, with vendors displaying and selling locally-made consumable products. As of this notice, there will be products such as personal care beeswax-based products, natural soaps, grass fed beef, lamb, herbs and breads.

Spring in the Valley 2008 is produced and sponsored entirely by volunteers and will be held rain or shine. The Silkesnas Preserve is located west of Spring Valley, WI on County Road CC; 1/3 mile south of the intersection of Highway 29 and County Road CC. Look for signs, and park on the roadside. See (http://www.silkesnas.org) for more details. At Silkesnas, "We leverage Wisconsin’s landscape to nurture the landscape of the human heart."

Faculty Salaries: Moratorium on Abundance

In response to yesterday's news about faculty salaries, Professor Doug Green has posted a very thoughtful essay in the Discussion Forum entitled "Moratorium on Abundance." I plan to weigh in on this important issue as well, and I hope that other members of the faculty will join in.

It's easy to access the Discussion Forum. There's a link at the very bottom of the left menu bar on "Inside Augsburg" under the Community header. Click this link, then click "Faculty and Staff" to get to Doug's essay. If you want to reply, there's a very obvious "button" labeled "post reply" at the top of the page.

StepUP Survey for Faculty and Staff

The StepUP® Program has an 11-year history of Augsburg College faculty and staff support and strength. The success of the Program is grounded in the developing environment present at the institution. This leads to the uniqueness of the Program which has the outstanding reputation of being the largest of its kind in the country. Augsburg College integrates this intentional recovery focus in our Drug Free Schools Plan.

In the next 8 weeks, the StepUP Program team members will gather information from faculty and staff. We will help to identify colleagues who recognize the importance of recovery services as integral to the campus environment of alcohol, drug and violence prevention programs and intend to create a coalition which will produce a document describing the value of the Program from the a faculty and staff perspective.

The College Recovery Coalition (CRC) will explore recovering student’s interaction with faculty and staff, learning environments across the campus, and summarize concerns and assets that young adults in recovery bring to the collegiate community. The coalition will be composed of faculty and staff who are supporters and advocates of recovery from alcohol and other drugs.
