Final Vocatio Chapel: Dr. Fardin Oliaei on April 9

The final Vocatio Chapel in the series, “Science as Vocation” will be on April 9 at 10:20 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Our guest will be Dr. Fardin Oliaei, an environmental scientist who formally worked for the MN Pollution Control Agency.

Dr. Oliaei will share her story of working with the MPCA. In 2005, she discovered chemicals in drinking water in the east metro. She attempted to follow the chemicals to their source, but was blocked from doing further research in order to protect the business interests in the area. Eventually, she was forced to resign from the MPCA for pursuing the chemical research.

Dr. Oliaei’s story highlights the dangerous relationship between ideology and science. She has been unable to find a job since she left the MPCA, which she claims is because of her insistence to focus on the chemical contamination.

Dr. Oliaei will speak in chapel on April 9 at 10:20 a.m. A lunch with Dr. Oliaei will follow lunch for those who would like to have follow-up conversation. To RSVP for the lunch, or for more questions about the Vocatio Chapel series, please contact Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1151.

MINNEAPOLIS (4/7/08) -- Augsburg College softball player Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Magnuson led the team with a .571 batting average (8-for-14) as Augsburg went 3-1 on the week with a doubleheader sweep of St. Catherine on Thursday and a split with Gustavus on Saturday. Against St. Catherine, Magnuson went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Augsburg's 6-2, first-game win, then went 2-for-4 with two triples, an RBI and a run scored in the second-game, a 13-5 (5 inn.) victory. Against Gustavus, Magnuson went 1-for-3 in the opening game, a 7-2 loss, then came back with a 3-for-4, two-run performance with a double and triple, leading the Auggies in a 9-4 triumph. She also pitched three innings of relief during the week, and did not commit an error in 32 defensive chances in the four games.

On the season, Magnuson leads the team with a .420 batting average, .605 slugging percentage and a .478 on-base percentage. She also has a team-high nine extra-base hits (four doubles, four triples, one home run). Magnuson is a two-time All-MIAC first-team softball selection and three-time All-MIAC first-team women's hockey selection.

Augsburg is now 9-15 overall and 5-1 in MIAC play, its best start to an MIAC campaign since the 2000 season. The Auggies are slated to host Macalester on Wednesday (4/9) at 5 p.m., and Hamline on Saturday (4/12) at 1 p.m., with both doubleheaders at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.
