Study International Business in Mexico

It’s not too late for International Business students to apply to study abroad with Augsburg’s Center for Global Education in Mexico during the fall of 2008. In fact, Augsburg will even pay for your airfare to and from Mexico!

One new program is the "International Business & Global Citizenship,” which offers one International Business course, two to three Spanish courses (including Business Spanish), and the possibility of internship with a Mexican or international business. It also includes a week-long seminar in Mexico City, the business capital of Latin America, and other opportunities for travel.

The Augsburg Mexico campus is in Cuernavaca, a city known as the “City of Eternal Spring” due to its year-round spring-like temperatures (70-80 degrees). Although its population is now close to a million, it is a beautiful city with a fascinating precolombian, colonial, and revolutionary history. It is located just 1 ½ hours south of Mexico City and 3 ½ hours north of Acapulco.

The application deadline is Tuesday, April.1. You also need to apply to the Augsburg Abroad office for college approval. They will accept CGE apps beyond the scheduled deadline of March 14. Look Who's Living: Blood Drive TODAY

Thank you to the terrific Augsburg students, staff and faculty that pre-registered to donate blood today. If you did not have a chance to get a specific time, walk-ins are welcome. So stop up in the East Commons between 10:00 and 4:00 p.m. TODAY and donate a pint of blood. Everyone who donates today will receive a free t-shirt.

Also all donor names will be entered into a drawing for two FREE Minnesota Twins tickets where Augsburg College and the winning donor names will be flashed up on the big screen at the MetroDome during the game!

Last Call for Sexual Assault Support Group

Counseling & Health Promotion is in the process of exploring interest in an on-campus, weekly sexual assault support group for the month of April, facilitated by the Director of the Aurora Center from the University of Minnesota (the U’s sexual assault and advocacy center). If you are a female student at Augsburg, who has experienced sexual assault and would like support from other students in the context of a professionally-facilitated group, please contact Beth Carlson of CCHP by email or phone (x1136) to let her know of your interest and the times in your schedule you would be available. One possible time is late afternoon on Tuesdays, but another time may be selected depending on the schedules of the facilitator and interested students.

Other community sexual assault support groups that are available free of charge to students include the group at the Aurora Center on the U campus at Boynton Health Services (contact Jamie Tiedemann at the Aurora Center if interested at 626-9988); or the Women’s Rape Support Group at the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center, Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7pm (2431 Hennepin Avenue; call 374-9077 for phone intake).

Effective Monday, March 31, 2008 our dining service cashiers will no longer be able to manually enter your student ID number at dining service locations.

Students who need to have their number manually entered must have their ID at the time of purchase.

This is being done to protect your meal plan and flex dollars from unauthorized use.

Premature Babies Fundraiser

Monday, March 31, 2008 we will be holding a fundraiser offering immediately following Chapel. Candy Coonrod, NNP will give a brief overview at the Chapel about premature babies. All proceeds will go to Premature Babies.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008 there will be a fundraiser event held at the Chapel from 1pm-6pm. We will be having prize drawings, silent auction, Rock Band, and snacks. A few items to bid on: Twins items, movies, bath and body products. Team up with your friends and pool your money to get a great auction item.

Women in Leadership Conference

Women in Leadership Conference, Thursday, May 1st at 7 PM. This event is sponsored by the Augsburg College MBA Program and is part of the "Connecting with the Community" education series. This conference will be held in Bethel Hall at Bethel Lutheran Church, 810 3rd Avenue SE, Rochester and is free and open to the public. No registration is needed. Featured speakers are Mayo Clinic Chief Administrative Officer, Shirley Weis, and community leader, appointed public official and former corporate executive, Jane Belau, who will also field questions at the conclusion of their talks.

Sexual Assault Advocate/Educator Opportunity

Are you interested in issues of sexual assault and relationship violence? Wanting to offer peer support to survivors, or wanting to increase awareness on the Augsburg campus about these issues? Wanting a great training opportunity that will provide real experience in the field of psychology/social services? The Aurora Center at the University of Minnesota is opening their trained peer Crisis Line, Legal Advocate and/or Violence Prevention Educator volunteer opportunities to Augsburg students. Augsburg students could bring their learning back to the Augsburg community through educational programs, or provide crisis and advocacy support to U of M and Augsburg students who have experienced sexual assault and other relationship violence.

The next Volunteer Training will be May 27th through June 6th (for Crisis Line or Legal Advocates) or May 27th through June 3rd (for Violence Prevention Educators). Thanks to Xia from McNair

Today is Xia Xiong's last day as Assistant Director of McNair. As former Director of the McNair Scholars Program who has had the opportunity to watch Xia progress through Augsburg, the U of M Counseling Program and now as a professional at Augsburg, I am awed by her perseverance, talents, high-energy, endless optimism and commitment to serving others.

Few people could have stepped into a start-up grant with three days notice (I called her on Friday and asked her to start on Monday) and made the impact she has on the program and the scholars in just six months time.

As she leaves for Wisconsin I wish her well but with the hope that she returns to Augsburg in the future as the valued staff member she has become.

Parker Palmer Presentation

I would like to invite you to an evening with Parker Palmer on April 10th at 7:00 PM at Hamline United Methodist Church. This is a free, public event and book signing. The title of Parker’s presentation is “The Hearts Imperative: Reclaiming Integrity and Courage in Professional and Public Life.”

Parker Palmer is a founder and Senior Partner of the Center for Courage a Renewal. http://www.couragerenewal.org/ A writer, speaker and activist, he serves as senior advisor to the Fetzer Institute and previously served as senior associate of the American Association of Higher Education. Author of seven books, his writing has been recognized with ten honorary doctorates and a number of national awards.

Ironman Bike Ride

If you would like to ride the Iron Man bike ride with the Augsburg Cycling Club please contact Beth Franklin at franklin@augsburg.edu The Iron Man bike ride is held in late April and has three different distances at 30, 60, and 100 miles. Each route is a wonderful ride through the country with wonderful rollers and great rest stops. The Iron Man is a great touring ride that has over 5,000 participants so your sure to find some company on what ever route you take. This will be a fun ride and we hope to hear from you.

Tickets on Sale for "Top Girls"

Tickets are now on sale for the Augsburg Theatre Department’s production of Top Girls, directed by Darcey Engen. The show will perform April 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 7:00 p.m. and April 13 and 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are priced at
$10 for General Public
$8 for ACTC faculty and staff
$5 for non-Augsburg students
$2 for Augsburg students and children under 12
(Augsburg students need to bring their student ID.)

The show contains adult language and themes that may not be appropriate for younger viewers.

Professor Bibus Presents Sabbatical Study Findings

Social Work Department Professor Tony Bibus presented results of his fall sabbatical study at the 115th Annual Training Conference and Expo of the Minnesota Social Service Association on March 27, 2008. His workshop was entitled "How Many County Social Workers Are Licensed Social Workers?" His report "Destination Deferred: A Report to the Minnesota Board of Social Work on the Exemption from Mandatory Licensing for Social Workers in Minnesota County Social Services" is available at http://www.socialwork.state.mn.us/
