English Teaching Assistants wanted for China
The English Language Centre (ELC) at the United International College
(UIC) is recruiting Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the next academic
year (September 2008 through June 2009). Candidates must hold a completed
bachelors degree in any discipline. TAs will provide 20 hours per week
of tutoring, team teaching, grading, club activities, and other services
to The ELC. TAs will receive round trip airfare, dormitory housing,

Weight Watchers Open House - Tomorrow!
Join the Augsburg Weight Watchers at Work group for an open house on
Tuesday, March 25 from 2:30 - 3 p.m. in Lindell 301. The Weight Watchers
group will begin a new 17-week session on Tuesday, April 1, and it
runs through July 22. Bring your wallet if you plan to join - the cost
of the session is $186, which can be paid by cash, check or credit,
and in one lump sum or three payments.
Our group is an amazing collection of women, men, faculty, staff and students,

Fulbright
Together with the Minnesota Private College Council, Macalester will host Carol Robles, an Assistant Director for the CIES Fulbright Scholar program.
When: Tuesday, April 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Lunch will be provided by MPCC.
Where: Weyerhaeuser Hall, 62 Macalester Street - in Weyerhaeuser Board Room 127
The workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Fulbright Scholar
programs for U.S. faculty and professionals. Ms. Robles will outline the program
requirements and specifics, discuss reasons to consider a Fulbright and detail
what it takes to prepare a competitive proposal. She will also discuss programs
that bring Fulbright Visiting Scholars to the U.S. and other Fulbright programs.
The workshop will include ample time for questions and discussion topics or concerns
particular to you and your faculty. Ms. Robles will present on opportunities
in all of the participating countries and can address in special depth the Western
Hemisphere region that she manages. The chance to have a free give and take session
with a Fulbright representative is a great advantage to having her in the Twin
Cities.
Ms. Ranya Rashed, American Program Manager at the Fulbright Commission in Cairo, Egypt, will accompany Ms. Robles. She will speak briefly about the Egypt program and is interested in meeting with faculty with specific interest in Fulbright programs in and Visiting Scholars from Egypt and the Middle East. Ms. Rashed will offer a valuable in-country perspective and information about the services provided by Fulbright commissions overseas.

"Oscar Romero" celebration in Chapel this Friday
El Salvador… "Oscar Romero" in Chapel this Friday
The region of El Salvador, Central America, was inhabited from early times by
Chibcha people ("muisca"), most of whom were Pipile and Lenca. The
Maya also lived within the region, but they were not very influential. The Spaniards
subdued the Aztecs in Mexico, and subsequently began the conquest of Central
America under the leadership of Pedro de Alvarado. In 1525, Alvarado founded
the city of El Salvador de Cuscatlan. The territory formed part of the Captaincy-General
of Guatemala. All five countries of Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua,
Guatemala and El Salvador) became independent from Spain in 1821 and organized
itself into a federation.
In 1960, the Alliance for Progress sponsored an industrialization program, within the Central American Common Market. High economic growth rates were attained without reducing the rampant unemployment with had caused 300,000 landless peasants to emigrate to neighboring Honduras. Population growth and competition between the local industrial interests led to war between El Salvador and Honduras in June 1969. The regional common market collapsed after the 100-hour conflict, severely damaging Salvadoran industry.
On March 24, 1980, the Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor Oscar A. Romero,
was assassinated while performing mass in a clear reprisal for his constant defense
of human rights.
Note: This brief description of El Salvador is a first part of three; subsequent
descriptions will narrate specifically the Christian life of "Oscar A. Romero"
and his legacy for a peaceful world. – All are invited to Chapel this Friday
