Security and Facilities Announcements

Security Alert - Stolen Vehicle

On Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, a vehicle was reported stolen while parked on 23rd Ave. The vehicle was taken between 9 p.m. and 10:17 p.m. The stolen vehicle is a Toyota Prius, champagne in color.

The driver of the vehicle was in Melby and left his keys, wallet and cell phone in his pants after changing into athletic apparel. He took his pants with him into the gym. He reports seeing someone near his pants, but didn't think anything of it. He later noticed that his pants and car were missing.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg’s Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times. Thieves can take your keys and use the remote to determine which car they work in! The registration and insurance certificates in your glove box will generally tell them where the other keys on your ring will work. If you can’t keep your keys on your person, consider leaving the remote at home.

- Always lock your vehicle and roll-up your windows.

- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in your trunk BEFORE you park your car. Better yet, leave your valuable at home.

- Never leave your car running unattended.

- Immediately report suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

If you have questions or concerns regarding crime at Augsburg, please contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or pack@augsburg.edu.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.

On this page, click on Enrollment/Degree Verification for more detailed instruction and information. World Visions Staff Book Group - Film

Film: "Yi Yi," by Edward Yang

Description: Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s 2000 film "Yi Yi" (A One and a Two) won the Best Director award at Cannes and Best Film from the National Society of Film Critics. Yang's best-known film is an absorbing 3-hour portrait of a middle-class Taipei family over the course of one year, as fathers, mothers, and children follow their hearts down long and complicated paths. A sumptuously shot masterpiece of everyday drama, "Yi Yi" treats with great seriousness nearly every aspect of contemporary city life. (New York Magazine)

The film will be viewed from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates: Tuesday, Jan. 22 in OGC 103 and Thursday, Jan. 24 in OGC 100. If you’d like to participate, please RSVP to Emily Cronk (cronk@augsburg.edu).

In February, we will begin discussion of our third book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini (see description below). The meeting dates for this novel are Feb. 13, 2008, and Mar. 5, 2008 from noon to 1:15 p.m. Interested participants will need to obtain their own book, so please start planning now.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
Description from Barnes and Noble: Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made "The Kite Runner" a beloved classic, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is at once an incredible chronicle of 30 years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. A stunning accomplishment, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

We welcome you to contact us with your ideas or questions.

Respectfully,

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe
