Saying Good-Bye to John Knight

We are sorry to announce that John Knight, Associate Director of the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning, is leaving the college to take a position with Desiring God, which is an organization closely affiliated with Bethlehem Baptist Church here in Minneapolis. John has been a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend. Among his many responsibilities, he has done exemplary work in the classroom and has helped launch the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning fund-raising efforts. We wish him the very best in his new calling at Desiring God. John will begin his new position this month. Because we want to give him a farewell when there are more people on campus, he has consented to return to Augsburg on Feb. 5, when there will be a reception in his honor. More details to follow.

Old Student Webmail to Be Retired on Jan. 31

Thanks for all the feedback on the new student webmail. Since the initial launch, we have upgraded the system, which has solved many of the initial issues you told us about.

Now might be a good time to begin familiarizing yourself with the new AugNet Webmail. You may still use the old version until midnight on Jan. 31, 2008.

Please contact the TechDesk at 612-330-1400 or techdesk@augsburg.edu with your questions or concerns about the new AugNet Webmail so that we can address any issues that may occur.

Focus the Nation

The Focus the Nation teach-in is still accepting presenters and looking for professors to commit to bringing their classes to the sessions. Please contact Halen Bower (bower@augsburg.edu) as soon as possible if you are interested.

FOCUS THE NATION: THE TEACH-IN
Jan. 31, 2008

The primary goals of Focus The Nation

The primary goal of FTN: Augsburg College is to educate the Augsburg community for individual action and build momentum for permanent environmental conscious practices and institutional actions. This includes:

- sustainable energy
- zero-waste management systems
- consumption awareness
- following the President’s Climate Commitment

***Augsburg College Focus The Nation Teach-in Model

Faculty participation across the curriculum is critical to building a teach-in that engages thousands or even tens of thousands of students on campuses across the country. In the model below, faculty are asked to present for only 10 minutes about topics related to CLIMATE CHANGE from the perspective of their discipline.

***Critical Information:
- Presenters: Submit presentation request to Halen Bower at bower@augsburg.edu for the Priority Deadline: Dec. 20, 2007
- Final date to submit presentation request is Jan. 11th, 2008.
- E-mail Halen Bower with Name, identify yourself as a professor, staff, alumni, student, etc.. If a professor, clearly indicate your commitment to bringing your Thursday class or not. If bring your class, how many students are enrolled. What time you would like to present at. Lastly, your presentation’s subject title.

***Who is able to give a presentation?
Any member of the Augsburg community including alumni, students, faculty, and staff are able to give a presentation. Preference is given to professors commit to a presentation during their Thursday course and bring their classes to a session. Student(s) from a class are able to participate as well. Students must gain the professors permission to move the class to the session location. Professors who sponsor a student presentation must e-mail Halen Bower at bower@augsburg.edu to confirm the student’s arrangement. Alumni and staff are also able to present. Those who do not bring a class are given second priority. However, do not be discouraged, the FTN Recruitment Committee is coordinating all teach in requests and wants to hear from every willing member of the Augsburg community.

***Who is going to attend the teach-in? Every session is open to the public!

- Three presenters per 1.5 hour session
- Students from presenting professors’ classes
- Professors, who are not presenting, but brought their classes
- Any Augsburg community member interested in attending this advertised session

***What will a presenter do? (Preference afforded to professors bringing their class)
- Provide a 10-minute presentation on how your subject would approach issues concerning climate change.
- Twenty minute discussion follows presentation guided by open ended questions
- Professors are encouraged to provide questions related to their presentation
- The organizers formed these three questions to be asked:

• Do you know what Augsburg is doing to be green? (Proposed by first session’s professor)

• What can individuals do to make a difference? (Proposed by second prof.)

• Third professor hands out “What are you willing to do?” sheet listing options for students to circle. (More information to come as FTN Finance Committee continues its investigatory efforts!)

***Where are these presentations going to be located?

This schedule permits for 15 presentations. FTN organizers are working to obtain more locations to provide such as SCI 123 and Old Main 18. Again, professors who are willing to present and bring their class are given priority. We are attempting to educate as many people as possible.

- Sateren Theater:
> 8 - 9:30 a.m. Session 1
> 9:40 - 11:10 a.m. Session 2
- Chapel: Mini-Convocation (Special treat to come)
- East Commons
> 11:50 a.m. -1:20 p.m. Session 3
> 1:30 - 3 p.m. Session 4
> 3:10 - 4:40 p.m. Session 5

Other locations are to be announced as more presenters request a time. The FTN organizers wish to, at least, fill the 15 available spots in Sateren and East Commons first with presenting professors, who bring their Thursday class, from a variety of disciplines. After these slots are filled, other sessions will be held in other locations around campus. A schedule of presenters will be used for advertising Focus The Nation. Therefore, if you want to present, but are not a professor with a Thursday class to bring, submit a request anyway! More the merrier!
