General Announcements

Las Posadas in Chapel this Friday at 10:20 a.m.

LAS POSADAS
Friday, Dec. 14 at 10:20 a.m. in Chapel

Christmas Holidays in Latin America and in many Spanish- speaking communities in the United States begin with “Las Posadas.” These are a series of nightly processions that reenact the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and their search for lodging (posada). During several nights a group of travelers goes from door to door knocking and asking for a place to stay, patterned after Mary and Joseph. Each night they are turned away when the people in the house say “there is no room!” On Christmas Eve, the travelers knock on the final door, which opens to receive them with joy and celebration. In this way each year the community enters anew the story of God’s hospitality to them in Christ. We hear Christ’s call to offer the same hospitality to the strangers, the travelers, the refugees and all in those in need of “posada.”

At Augsburg, Las Posadas is a special religious event that helps us observe Advent, a time when we wait for God’s will, hope and peace. Advent is a time for renewal of a faith reflecting true hospitality.

Friday, Dec. 14, Chapel and Las Posadas begin at 10:20 a.m. with songs, a mariachi band, Latin food, piñatas and more. All are invited!

This year’s co-sponsors of Las Posadas are: Parent and Family Relations and Counseling and Health Promotions. For more information, call either Sonja Hagander at 1735/e-mail hagander@augsburg.edu or Emiliano Chagil at 1309/chagil@augsburg.edu.

Focus the Nation Update

FOCUS THE NATION: THE TEACH-IN
Jan. 31, 2008

The primary goals of Focus The Nation

The primary goal of FTN: Augsburg College is to educate the Augsburg community for individual action and build momentum for permanent environmental conscious practices and institutional actions. This includes:

- sustainable energy
- zero-waste management systems
- consumption awareness
- following the President’s Climate Commitment

***Augsburg College Focus The Nation Teach-in Model

Faculty participation across the curriculum is critical to building a teach-in that engages thousands or even tens of thousands of students on campuses across the country. In the model below, faculty are asked to present for only 10 minutes about topics related to CLIMATE CHANGE from the perspective of their discipline.

***Critical Information:
- Presenters: Submit presentation request to Halen Bower at bower@augsburg.edu for the Priority Deadline: Dec. 20, 2007
- Final date to submit presentation request is Jan. 5, 2008.
- E-mail Halen Bower with Name, identify yourself as a professor, staff, alumni, student, etc.. If a professor, clearly indicate your commitment to bringing your Thursday class or not. If bring your class, how many students are enrolled. What time you would like to present at. Lastly, your presentation’s subject title.

***Who is able to give a presentation?
Any member of the Augsburg community including alumni, students, faculty, and staff are able to give a presentation. Preference is given to professors commit to a presentation during their Thursday course and bring their classes to a session. Student(s) from a class are able to participate as well. Students must gain the professors permission to move the class to the session location. Professors who sponsor a student presentation must e-mail Halen Bower at bower@augsburg.edu to confirm the student’s arrangement. Alumni and staff are also able to present. Those who do not bring a class are given second priority. However, do not be discouraged, the FTN Recruitment Committee is coordinating all teach in requests and wants to hear from every willing member of the Augsburg community.

***Who is going to attend the teach-in? Every session is open to the public!

- Three presenters per 1.5 hour session
- Students from presenting professors’ classes
- Professors, who are not presenting, but brought their classes
- Any Augsburg community member interested in attending this advertised session

***What will a presenter do? (Preference afforded to professors bringing their class)
- Provide a 10-minute presentation on how your subject would approach issues concerning climate change.
- Twenty minute discussion follows presentation guided by open ended questions
- Professors are encouraged to provide questions related to their presentation
- The organizers formed these three questions to be asked:

• Do you know what Augsburg is doing to be green? (Proposed by first session’s professor)

• What can individuals do to make a difference? (Proposed by second prof.)

• Third professor hands out “What are you willing to do?” sheet listing options for students to circle. (More information to come as FTN Finance Committee continues its investigatory efforts!)

***Where are these presentations going to be located?

This schedule permits for 15 presentations. FTN organizers are working to obtain more locations to provide such as SCI 123 and Old Main 18. Again, professors who are willing to present and bring their class are given priority. We are attempting to educate as many people as possible.

- Sateren Theater:
> 8 - 9:30 a.m. Session 1
> 9:40 - 11:10 a.m. Session 2
- Chapel: Mini-Convocation (Special treat to come)
- East Commons
> 11:50 a.m. -1:20 p.m. Session 3
> 1:30 - 3 p.m. Session 4
> 3:10 - 4:40 p.m. Session 5

Other locations are to be announced as more presenters request a time. The FTN organizers wish to, at least, fill the 15 available spots in Sateren and East Commons first with presenting professors, who bring their Thursday class, from a variety of disciplines. After these slots are filled, other sessions will be held in other locations around campus. A schedule of presenters will be used for advertising Focus The Nation. Therefore, if you want to present, but are not a professor with a Thursday class to bring, submit a request anyway! More the merrier!

Attention Student Employees

This notice is only for students who are employed by Augsburg College.

In preparation for year-end 2007 and the mailing of W-2 forms, we ask each employee to review the items below and contact us with any changes or updates to your personal information on record with Payroll.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub.

To help protect your identity, your social security number is not normally printed on your pay stub. We do print it this time of year so the SSN may be verified. Please take a look at your pay stub this month and verify that the correct SSN number is listed. If the Social Security Number on your pay stub is incorrect, please notify HR/Payroll immediately. The contact information is as follows:

Linda Vlieger, x1216, vlieger@augsburg.edu
Lor Yang, x1052, yangl@augsburg.edu

In order for the Social Security Administration to properly post your earnings, the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card. If your name has changed legally (marriage, divorce, etc.) and it does not match your pay stub, please submit a copy of a Social Security card displaying the correct name to Human Resources to update your employment record. If your social security card does not display the correct name, please call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local Social Security Administration office to resolve the discrepancy.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

W-2 forms will be mailed directly to your home, so it is essential that we have your correct address on file. You can change your home address and phone number by sending the information via email or by completing a Change of Address form available from Human Resources.

3) Check your tax withholdings

The tax withholdings you are currently claiming are printed on the bottom left section of your paycheck stub or direct deposit stub. If you wish to change your tax withholdings, please complete a new federal W-4 form. Forms are available from the HR department or may be downloaded from the public folder under Human Resources on Augnet. Forward your completed, signed, and dated forms to HR/Payroll at campus box 79 for processing on the next available payroll.

Special Note:
If you claimed EXEMPT on your W-4 for 2007, the IRS requires that you re-submit a new federal form W-4 for 2008 by February 15, 2008. If you do not submit a new form W-4, federal withholding tax will be withheld as if you were claiming single with zero withholding allowances. Specific instances when a person is allowed to claim exempt are indicated on the W-4 form.

We appreciate your assistance with all of these items. Feel free to contact HR/Payroll with any questions.

Happy Holidays!

Keeping Track of Auggies

CSWL's Auggies Engaged In Action: Urban Partners

Welcome to the fall semester's final installment of CSWL's Auggies Engaged in Action. Up to this point, we've been focused on individuals who are taking their education to new heights through engagement with the community. This time, we'd like to focus on an entire group of Auggies engaged in action: The CSWL Urban Partners Interns!

You may have heard about our CSWL Augsburg Reads program, where over 25 Auggies use their work-study eligibility to tutor nearly 100 youth in our neighborhood. You have also likely heard about the amazing community work being accomplished by the student leaders involved in the CSWL's Campus Kitchen program. What you probably haven't heard about is CSWL's Urban Partners Internship Program! It's our new leadership development internship that engages work-study eligible students in meaningful work experiences with community organizations and businesses. At the same time, interns gather for seminars to explore topics such as personal leadership strengths, communication styles, conflict resolution, and diversity.

Without further adieu, allow me to introduce our first crop of Urban Partners Interns and the community partner they are working with!

Angela Neuhaus: Faith in the City Personal Finance Center
Caitlin Massop: Minnesota Internship Center (A charter high school and social services organization that works with homeless young adults)
John Rodriguez: Minnesota Internship Center
Lauren Back: Augsburg Fairview Academy for Health Careers
Luul Ahmed: East African Women's Center
Mary Gavin: Youth CARE
Megan Hollihan: Minnesota Internship Center
Schuyler Dunhaupt Tilson: Projects for Pride in Living (PPL)

These students are doing amazing work, so please give them an electronic round of applause!

From all of us in the Center for Service, Work, & Learning, have a wonderful holiday and stay tuned for more stories about amazing, engaged Auggies next semester!

Women's Hockey Team Going to Europe Jan. 3-12

Augsburg's women's hockey team to travel to Germany, Austria and Italy in early January

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/121207whockey.html

MINNEAPOLIS (12/12/07) -- For the second time in the 13-year history of the program, the Augsburg College women's hockey team will be traveling to Europe, this time for a 10-day excursion to Germany, Austria and Italy in early January.

The Auggies will play three games against local club competition during the trip from Jan. 3-12, while also experiencing the beauty and history of Europe. This is the second-ever European trip for the Augsburg women's hockey program; the team traveled to Italy and Austria in the 2003-04 season.

Twenty members of the team, along with head coach Jill Pohtilla, assistant coach Tom Peart, head athletic trainer Missy Strauch and several family members and friends, will be making this year's trip.

"I'm excited that we have the opportunity to travel to Europe again, using hockey as our tool for spreading goodwill," Pohtilla said. "The kids that make a commitment to a winter sport often don't have an opportunity to do a study abroad program while they're in college. This is an opportunity for them to see another part of the world and learn about history, and experience a different culture."

The team will fly from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Munich, Germany on Jan. 3 and spend three days in the Bavarian city, with side trips to Dachau and Bad Tolz. The team will play two games against German competition while in the Munich area.

From Munich, the Auggies will travel to Innsbruck, Austria for a day of sightseeing, then travel to Bolzano, Italy, located in the northern part of the country in the Alto Adige region. The team will play its final game in Bolzano against an Italian team. From Bolzano, the team will travel for a day of sightseeing in Florence, and finish the trip with sightseeing in Rome, including a visit to the Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The team will return to Minneapolis-St. Paul on Jan. 12.

Members of the traveling party will be providing daily updates and photos for the Augsburg women's hockey web site, which will be updated throughout the trip.
