Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery

Every year, approximately 3,000 people lose their lives in home fires. Many of these deaths may have been prevented if a working smoke detector had been in place. Please join the Augsburg College Department of Public Safety and Fire Professionals around this country and remember to invest some time to "Change your Clock, Change the Battery in your Smoke Detector." It is a simple message and an easy task. The return on your investment may be a life saved from a fire.

• How does the ELCA candidacy process work?
• What’s happening in youth ministry? (good for YFM majors)

Troy Deden Benefit Dinner

One of our fellow Auggies, Troy Deden, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Many of us have already sent our thoughts and prayers, but now comes a time for us to come together and try to raise some money for Troy and his fight. A benefit dinner is being held on Saturday, Nov. 10 in the Christensen Center at Augsburg. The dinner runs from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and includes a silent auction. The dinner is free of charge, but donations are appreciated. If unable to attend, donations are being taken at any Wells Fargo location under the account titled "The Troy Deden Fund." If anything, show your support by attending the dinner. We would love to see you there. Thank you so much!

Leadership Workshop on Nov. 15: Living Leadership

The Center for Leadership Studies (CLS) invites you to attend “Creating New Paths through Social Entrepreneurship,” a workshop presented by Barbara Hensley. After Hensley lost two sisters to breast cancer, she became painfully aware of the challenges faced by underserved women who are fighting the disease. Her response was to leave her 25-year career as a successful corporate executive and create the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer™, a social enterprise that channels a percentage of revenue directly to those touched by the disease. Hope Chest raises funds for its foundation through retail stores that sell designer women’s clothing, accessories, and up-scale furniture donated from individuals and corporations. Hensley will share her story, focusing on the development of her unique business model and the challenges of expanding her business.

Date and time: Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. (refreshments at 5:30 p.m.)
Location: Marshall Room, Christensen Center

For more information or to reserve a space, contact Patty Park at 612-330-1150 or parkp@augsburg.edu.

North Country Co-op Closing

After 37 years of business in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood (most of those years on Augsburg's campus), North Country Co-op is closing their doors permanently. Sunday, Nov. 4, is the last day they plan to be open. They are closing due to financial problems, so it's hard to go in there, but it's helpful to them for us to buy what's left on the shelves. Today, everything is 20% and 30% off.

Events are in the works to remember and celebrate the Co-op's legacy in this community. I will post dates and times in the A-mail when that information becomes available.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Schield Elected VP of National Numeracy Network

Milo Schield, Professor of Business Administration, was named Vice President of the National Numeracy Network -- an organization dedicated to numeracy (quantitative literacy) across the curriculum. On Oct. 20, at a meeting on "Civic Learning at the Intersections" sponsored by the AACU in Denver, Milo organized a session on "Civic Engagement and Numeracy" where he spoke along with Joel Best (author of Damned Lies and Statistics) and Dr. Neil Lutsky (Carleton College). In mid-October, Milo gave an invited talk to Carleton College faculty on Augsburg's statistical literacy course (GST 200). Carleton's President attended this talk. In August, Milo organized an invited session on Multivariate Thinking for the International Statistical Institute meeting in Lisbon. Speakers included Dr. Donald Rubin (Harvard University) and Dr. David Cox (Cambridge). In July, Milo organized a session on Statistical Literacy at the national meeting of the American Statistical Associations. Speakers included Dr. Stephen Doig, Walter Cronkite Professor of Journalistm (U. Az) talking on "Statistics for Innumerate Journalists." In June, Milo was invited to present a paper at a Wingspread conference in Racine on "Quantitative Literacy and School Mathematics: Percentages and Fractions" in which he argued that school math teachers might spend less time teaching students how to manipulate fractions and more time teaching them how to read and interpret tables and graphs of rates and percents. At the ASA, Milo presented papers on "Numbers in the News: A Survey" and "Grammar of Statements Involving 'Chance.'" At Lisbon, Milo gave a paper for the International Association of Statistics Educators on using Moodle for online exercises (Statistical Literacy: Factual Assessment to Support Hypothetical Thinking).

Intramural Volleyball and Soccer Information

Intramurals is no longer taking rosters for the fall volleyball season. There are currently 16 teams registered, and that is as many as we can take based on court times and availability. Keep your eyes open for league information within the next couple of days via e-mail and IM board in Melby.

We are still taking rosters for the first eight teams to sign-up for co-ed soccer, with currently seven slots remaining. We are numbering the rosters in the order we receive them, and based on field availability, we are limited to the first eight teams. Co-ed means there must be a minimum of three women on the field of the seven players allowed at all times – what you do with the other four players is up to you. Rosters and other information can be found downstairs in Melby next to the IM board.

Winford Named to D3Football.com Team of the Week

Augsburg's Royce Winford named to D3Football.com of the Week for second straight week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/103107winford.html

MINNEAPOLIS (10/31/07) -- For the second straight week, Augsburg College wide receiver Royce Winford (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week, following his performance in Saturday's 44-38 Augsburg victory over Gustavus.

The D3Football.com Team of the Week recognizes the outstanding performances from throughout the country in NCAA Division III football. The Team of the Week is selected by D3Football.com staff and contributors from players nominated by sports information directors, coaches and conference offices.

Winford recorded his third straight 200-yard receiving game and sixth triple-digit receiving game of the season with 17 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns in Augsburg's victory on Saturday, improving the Auggies' record to 4-4 (equaling the Auggies' number of victories in the previous three seasons combined). Winford caught a 31-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and the eventual game-winning touchdown pass, a 15-yarder with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Winford also became the second Augsburg receiver to ever reach the 1,000-yard single-season receiving plateau with his performance on Saturday. He now has 1,199 yards on 86 receptions and 12 touchdowns (all tops among MIAC receivers in overall statistics); Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98) had 1,213 receiving yards in 1996, 1,328 yards in 1997 and 1,860 yards in 1998. Winford's 86 receptions is now the second-most in school history, behind Hvistendahl's 112 in 1998; and his 12 touchdowns are third-most, behind Hvistendahl's 15 in both 1998 and 1997.

Winford's 86 receptions (10.75 per game) and 1,199 receiving yards (149.9 per game) are both tops among MIAC receivers in overall play, and his 12.33 receptions per game and 164.2 receiving yards per game in conference games-only are also tops among league receivers.

Among NCAA Division III players, Winford leads the country in receptions per game (10.8), receiving yardage per game (149.9) and total receiving yards (1,199), while standing 33rd nationally in scoring (9.0 points per game) and 34th in all-purpose yards per game (152.3).

In his career at Augsburg (26 games), Winford has 1,939 yards on 139 catches with 20 touchdowns, standing fifth in school history in career receiving yardage, sixth in receptions and third in touchdowns.

The Auggies, now 4-4 on the season and 2-4 in MIAC play, host Bethel University on Friday (11/2) at 7 p.m. at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
