Scholastic Connections Mentor Profile

Mentor Ami Nafzger, a 1994 Augsburg social work graduate, is an employment consultant with Goodwill Easter Seals and serves in various capacities with five non-profit volunteer organizations: the Asian Pacific Cultural Center, FATHER, G.O.A.L., Dragon Festival & Dragon Boat Races, and the Children's Home Society & Family Services. Adopted from Korea at age 4, she grew up with very few Asian connections and began exploring that part of her identity while at Augsburg. Following graduation, she returned to Korea, where she spent 7 years living in her native culture and learning more about herself. She also taught English at various schools. Finding little assistance available to adoptees in helping them learn about their heritage and integration back into their native culture, she formed Global Overseas Adoptees Link (G.O.A.L.). It provides many services including a network of host families for visiting adoptees, translation, and birth services and reunions. By 2002, the organization had thousands of volunteers and several paid staff. Ami's story is included in two adoptee anthologies published last year.

Ami mentors Ashley Stoffers. This is their second year working together in Scholastic Connections.

General Announcements

All Saints' Day - Nov. 1, 11:20 a.m.

This message is on behalf of Pastor Sonja Hagander:

Thursday, Nov. 1 is the All Saints' Observance. In Chapel, we will be remembering those who have died this year. If you have names of loved ones you wish to have read in Chapel, please call me at x1732, or e-mail me at maunu@augsburg.edu.

All Saints' Day is a celebration in the church of its faithful witnesses and our communion with them through baptism. Saints are saints not because of their greatness, but because they lived in the love of God. All Saints' Day is a celebration of God's love poured out on real people, yesterday, today, and always.

Jane Fonda Movie Night at Augsburg House

Jane Fonda is coming to speak on campus – wouldn't you like to see some of her movies? Join us for popcorn, movies, and discussion, hosted by Abigail Pribbenow at Augsburg House, 2848 West River Parkway:

Wednesday, Oct. 17: "Georgia Rule" (with Lindsay Lohan)
From the Internet Movie Database:
Rebellious teenager Rachel screams, swears, drinks and is - in a word - uncontrollable. With her latest car crash, Rachel has broken the final rule in mom Lily's San Francisco home. With nowhere else to take the impulsive and rambunctious girl, Lily hauls her daughter to the one place she swore she'd never return...her own mother's Idaho farm. Matriarch Georgia is not your typical sweet and doting grandmother. She lives her life by a number of unbreakable rules, demanding anyone who shares her home do the same - God comes first and hard work comes a very close second. Now saddled with raising the young woman, it will require each patient breath she takes to understand Rachel's fury. But as Rachel succumbs to her summer of misery and shakes up the tiny Mormon town, Georgia notices something is changing within her granddaughter. Given structure and responsibilities, Rachel is letting her guard down and learning compassion...especially for her mother. Her journey will lead all three women to revelations of buried family secrets and an understanding that - regardless of what happens - the ties that bind can never be broken.

Wednesday, Oct. 24: "Julia" (with Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep)
Wednesday, Nov. 7: "9 to 5" (with Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton)

The show starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by discussion. Campus Security can escort you to the house if you need a ride. Call x1717 to make arrangements.

Disability Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities

Questions frequently asked by faculty:

Q. How can I encourage students with disabilities to talk with me about their accommodations?

A. Announce at the beginning of a course that you are available to discuss instructional methods and appropriate course modifications with students who have disabilities. In addition, include a note to this effect on your course syllabus. For example:

"To request academic accommodations due to a disability, please contact the Disability Services Office (phone). If you have a letter from their office indicating that you have a disability which requires academic accommodations, please present the letter to me so we can discuss the accommodations that you might need in this class."

Q. Is it acceptable to ask a student who is having obvious difficulties whether he has a disability or to refer the student to the office that provides disability support services?

A. No. It is not a good idea to ask directly about a possible disability for a couple of reasons. First, the Americans with Disabilities Act states that a public entity may not make unnecessary inquiries into the existence of a disability. These inquiries usually relate to hiring or pre-admission screening, but when talking with students such inquiries should also be avoided. A direct inquiry such as this could also be considered intrusive or insensitive. You may simply tell the student that you notice she is having academic difficulty and encourage her to come talk with you about gaining assistance, just as you would with any student.

THE DECEPTION
adapted by Steven Epp and Dominique Serrand
from "La Fausse Suivante" by Pierre Marivaux
directed by Dominique Serrand
Oct. 13 - Nov. 25
first presented at La Jolla Playhouse, July 17 - Aug. 19, 2007

"a dark, tantalizing, thoroughly Jeune Lune vision… remarkable!"
— The San Diego Union-Tribune

Suspecting her husband-to-be of betrayal, a fetching young heiress disguises herself as a knight to woo the hand of the countess he desires. In this new adaptation of an 18th century romp, Theatre de la Jeune Lune brings their incomparable wit and physical exuberance to the perils of courtships in a deliciously nasty game of love, sex and power.

Student Survey About Diversity

Augsburg College staff and administrative departments are working on a Diversity Strategic Plan.

To do so, we need input, especially from students, on what the college does and does not do to advance its mission: “To nurture future leaders in service to the world...by an intentionally diverse campus community.”

You are invited to complete this online survey. The address is
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VBBXRiVVBPZXDDPe7SMCyQ_3d_3d

This is exciting, timely and important work, and we are grateful for your help. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Augsburg College. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting those relationships. The records of this study will be kept private. In any sort of report that we might publish, we will not include any information that will make it possible to identify any specific student. Research records will be kept in a secure file on a secure server.

Upon completion of the survey, you will have an opportunity to enter a drawing for a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble.

Questions regarding this survey can be directed to Ann Garvey at 612-330-1168, garvey@augsburg.edu, or Campus Box 72.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Rita Kaplan

It has recently come to my attention that a former member of our Augsburg community has passed away. Rita Kaplan worked at Augsburg from 1988 to 1997, playing a key role in establishing our Paideia program, while working on external outreach projects as Assistant to President Charles Anderson. Rita built on her social work education and background throughout her multi-dimensional career, including serving as President of the St. Louis MO League of Women Voters, Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers of MN, Acting Director for the Sister Kenny Foundation, and working with the Honeywell and Bush Foundations. Rita’s husband, Manny, was an integral part of the early development and growth of Augsburg’s PA program, serving as Medical Director and instructor. Services for Rita have been held, and memorials are preferred to the University of Minnesota Hospitals or Minnesota League of Women Voters. We are grateful for the legacy Rita leaves, and we remember Manny and family in our prayers.

Ultimate Tryouts (Spring Team)

The last ultimate tryout will be held this Friday, Oct. 19 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (please arrive 15 minutes early) on Edor Nelson Field. Tryouts are meant to determine the team(s) that will represent Augsburg College in a booming sport. Potential players are required to make only one of these dates. If these days do not work, please let me, Justin or Al know ASAP, so we can determine if we need another day of tryouts or something else.

Tryouts will be based on seven core skills of an ultimate player. These include endurance, throwing, catching, defense, offense, overall game-play and teamwork. To test these strengths, there will be several drills and exercises, including a 1-mile run with a target time between 6 and 7.5 minutes. Throwing will include forehand and backhand, nothing else. On the day of tryouts, please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt (people with gray shirts will be punished), a disc (if you have one, put your name on it), cleats (if you don't have cleats, wear flats; barefoot is not acceptable), water, and arrive 15 minutes early, as we will start on time.

*During all tryouts, we will be using UPA Rules
