Center for Teaching and Learning Faculty Seminar on Students with Asperger’s Syndrome – Oct. 19, 3:00 p.m. in Lindell 301

October is National Disability Awareness Month. Based on Feedback from Augsburg Faculty, the CLASS Office presents: College Students with Asperger’s Syndrome, a discussion of impacts on learning and behavior in the classroom. Students with Asperger’s Syndrome attending Augsburg College have increased 1000% since 1998. While this is a national trend, it is very likely to impact teaching and learning within your classroom. Funds for Faculty Travel to CGE Sites

The Office of International Programs, the Center for Teaching & Learning, and the Lilly Endowment are collaborating to offer professional development opportunities for two Augsburg College faculty to experience programming at Center for Global Education sites in the 2008 calendar year. The grant provides travel funds (up to $2,000) for faculty to reflect on faith and vocation in a global context at one of CGE’s locations.

Preference will be given to faculty interested in leading a study abroad program to a CGE site who have not yet done so, as well as to faculty in study abroad's under-represented disciplines (i.e. science, math).

Poster Contest

In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, the CLASS office is sponsoring a poster contest. We have the posters, and you provide the artwork.

Requirements are that the artwork promote awareness of disabilities on campus in a positive and collegial format, and include a slogan or phrase that you believe best conveys understanding and acceptance for each individual's unique contributions.

First Prize is a $50 gift certificate, Second Prize is a $25 gift certificate, and Third Prize is a $15 gift certificate. There will be choices available as to where the gift certificates can be redeemed.

If you are interested in submitting an entry for consideration, please pick up a blank poster board in the CLASS office (Foss 17A). All entries must be submitted to us by Friday, Oct. 26 before 5 p.m. All posters created will be displayed in the Christensen Center coffee shop, and the top three entries will be framed and displayed in the CLASS office after October.

The Center for Universal Design in Education

The Center for Universal Design in Education (UDE) develops and collects Web-based resources to help educators apply universal design to all aspects of the educational experience:

• instruction
• student services
• information technology
• physical spaces

The Center for UDE is directed by DO-IT at the University of Washington and funded by the U.S. Department of Education (grant #P333A050064) and the National Science Foundation (cooperative agreement #HRD-0227995). Consult the following resources for an introduction to and applications of UDE.

Introduction to Universal Design
Definition, principles, and processes of universal design and examples of applications in educational settings.

Postsecondary Education
Specific ways that universal design can enhance the postsecondary experience for all students.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration with Flamenco

Zorongo Flamenco is an American Spanish dance comprised of dancers and guitarists – renowned for bringing the power, passion and virtuosity of the art of dancing to all audiences. Flamenco’s essence combines the dancing soul of Spain with the lively innovative spirit of America in today’s world of entertainment; it relates to contemporary audiences’ curiosity through its colorful dresses, music and rhythmic steps.

It's Time for Strategy, Talent and Fun!

This is an all-hall poker tournament sponsored by Mortensen Hall. It's a 5-week long tournament, and the best of the best poker player in Mort will defeat all and take home the one and only grand prize ($50 Best Buy gift card). Second place will get Kanye West's brand new CD.

Registration period is from Friday, Oct. 12 to Wednesday, Oct. 17. Please e-mail nguyenc@augsburg.edu to register for the tournament. Contestants will be placed randomly with a group of players and compete against them. The winner moves to the next round.

The tournament is hosted in the Mort lobby every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

Balancing Demands of Work/Family/School?

Sometimes it feels like you're the only one - but you're not alone! The Women's Resource Center is hosting a brown-bag lunch series for women and men who are balancing the competing demands of work, family, and school. Bring your lunch and find support, share strategies, and release stress. Children are welcome!

Vocatio Chapel with Dr. Paul Quie, Wed. Oct. 24

Augsburg College continues its Vocatio Chapel Series on "Science as Vocation" on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 10:20 a.m. with Dr. Paul Quie. He is a professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Quie will be speaking to the Augsburg community about “The Call to Science & Medicine.” In addition to his teaching, Dr. Quie has also advised the founding of the Physicians Assistant Program at Augsburg and continues to work with summer research students.

Spanish Conversation, Lunch and Flamenco Thursday

There has been a change in our schedule for tomorrow. We will meet as planned in the cafeteria on the second floor of Christensen, but only from 11:00 a.m. - noon. Then, we have the wonderful opportunity of watching Zorongo Flamenco perform on 1st floor Christensen, next to Starbuck's, where they will dance from noon - 1 p.m. Flamenco is one of the traditional dances of Spain, recognized for its intricate guitar playing and fiery yet graceful dancing.
