Subject: Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Submitter:
Emiliano Chagil, Director, Hispanic-Latino Student Services

Message: Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 – Oct. 15
Article #1

This Hispanic Heritage Month occasion was authorized by Congress in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, which encompassed Sept. 16, Mexico’s Independence Day. In 1988, the designation was expanded to a month beginning every Sept. 15, which marks the anniversary of independence of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Chile, South America, marks the anniversary of its independence on Sept. 18.

This month of celebration is a time for the Hispanic community in the United States to commemorate its history, pride, identity and contributions to the world. Its cultural diversity is reflected in the mix of its roots from individual Latin American countries, Spain and the Caribbean. The main characteristic of Hispanics/Latinos is the shared native language Spanish spoken by over 332 million people in the world and 35.3 million in North America; a fair number of U.S.-born Hispanics don’t speak Spanish. As most speak Spanish, however, each subgroup adapts the pronunciation and slang of its homeland according to circumstances. Likewise, they have inherited different religious traditions from foreign countries or from their homelands.

In a 2006 poll of Hispanic adults, 42 percent said they choose to be called Hispanic, only 17 percent said Latino and 34 percent had no particular preference. Despite these cultural differences, other social forces contribute to the formation of an increasingly unified Hispanic identity in the world through its economic and political power. In today’s business, they command nearly $700 billion in buying power. As US’s largest minority, Hispanics promise to help remake America in the 21st century as vitally as African Americans did in the 20th century.

Close to home and experiencing the Hispanic growth, this year at Augsburg, 84 Hispanic/Latino students are enrolled in the Day, WEC or Graduate programs; in Fall 2003, there were 40 students. During this Hispanic Heritage Month, everyone is encouraged to express their own ethnicity, cultural affiliation or identity, and especially to exercise their own intellectual freedom in order to best care for and improve our world for the common good. Activities on campus will be announced accordingly. Two more articles will be appearing soon to offer our Augsburg community a broader picture and understanding of the Hispanic/Latino people in America.

For more information, contact Hispanic/Latino Student Services or Emiliano at x1309 or chagil@augsburg.edu. This is article #1 of 3. Article #3 will describe the Hispanic population's 26 percent increase and its positive impact in rural and small-town America, according to the U.S. Census.
