Subject: New Book Group for Staff: World Visions
Submitter:
Lynn Ellingson, Graduate Recruiter, Weekend College Admissions

Message: We are excited to launch a new book group for staff, “World Visions,” which will illuminate diverse perspectives from around the globe.

Our primary goals include learning about other cultures and worldviews, as well as building community on campus. And yes – we plan to have fun! We will launch a Moodle site to post additional resources and encourage additional discussions. We have received funding from workculture@augsburg to pay for most of our books. After our discussions, we plan to donate our used books to local community centers or CGE sites abroad.

Details: Throughout the academic year, we will discuss four books (fiction and non-fiction) and view one film. We are inviting guest speakers with expertise on the topic or region, including Augsburg professors and friends from the community. We will meet once a month, over the lunch hour, to accommodate busy schedules. (Wednesdays, Noon – 1:15) Each book will be discussed during two meetings. You will register for one book at a time, and may join us for one, two, or all five selections. The selections and schedule for the first 3 of the series are below.

If you’d like to participate in the discussions for book one, please RSVP to Emily Cronk (cronk@augsburg.edu) before September 14th. The first ten to rsvp will receive a free book; at the end of our discussion, we will donate our books to other communities.

Please feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions. Happy reading!

Respectfully,

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe.

Selections and Schedule:

Book 1: The Book of Lamentations, by Rosaro Castellanos.
Dates: Wednesday, September 26 and October 17 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: Our first book is in honor of CGE’s 25th anniversary! “A masterpiece of contemporary Latin American fiction, this novel transposes episodes from actual Maya uprisings in Chiapas in 1712 and 1868 to the 1930s. This book, by Mexico’s most important woman novelist of the twentieth century, combines historical events with modern times.” (Resource Center of the Americas synopsis)

Book 2: Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Dates: November 14 and December 5 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: A fascinating and controversial memoir by a Somali woman. "Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright little girl evolved out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no story could be timelier or more significant.” (publisher description)

Film: Yi Yi, Edward Yang
Date: January (TBD)
Description: Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s 2000 film Yi Yi (A One and a Two) won the Best Director award at Cannes and Best Film from the National Society of Film Critics. Yang's best-known film is an absorbing three-hour portrait of a middle-class Taipei family over the course of one year, as fathers, mothers, and children follow their hearts down long and complicated paths. A sumptuously shot masterpiece of everyday drama, Yi Yi treats with great seriousness nearly every aspect of contemporary city life. (New York Magazine)

Message: Help Us Help Alexander Gain Independence and Friendship

Hello to our Families and Friends:

We hope this letter finds you well. A lot has gone on in our lives in the past 6 years, one of the largest events being Alexander. As you know, Alexander was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 6 at Fraser here in St. Paul. Since that diagnosis our lives have been a flurry of appointments, meetings and starting First grade this coming month. Alex remains active in his services of OT, ST, and behavior management with the Real Program and attends Adventure Club during the rest of my work hours. Alexander has made great advances in his ability to cope and responds well to his many therapies. We still have the anxiety and frustration to help him through on a daily basis. First grade will be a real challenge as he copes to be in school all day.

Since diagnosis this past fall, Alexander has continued to make great progress with his Autism. He has had some wonderful teachers and therapists who have mentored and molded his young, active mind. However, Alexander still deals with behavior issues on a daily basis. These include disregard for basic safety (crossing traffic, risky physical chances, running off), temper outbursts, and appearing to live in “his own little world.” In large social situations, innumerable stimuli accost Alexander to the point he reaches sensory overload and then comes the “meltdown.” With the meltdown comes the sneers and jeers from those who don’t know Alexander; simple stares, mumbled comments, Alexander’s shame and embarrassment to cry and be so out of control is heartbreaking.

The biggest problem is that Alexander looks like any other adorable six year old child. Autistic kids don’t look different, but they act differently as you know. Autism is a developmental disability, and many people have a hard time calling Alexander disabled because he doesn’t have a wheelchair, or crutches, or a service animal…

A service animal…what a neat concept! A friend of the family with an autistic child raised money for and obtained an Autism Assistance Dog for their son from a foundation in Xenia, Ohio called 4 Paws For Ability. 4 Paws is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that helps families with special needs acquire canine service animals. Currently, we are beginning to fundraise $14,000 for 4 Paws to help Alexander get an Autism Assistance Dog. This dog will be trained to help Alexander with meltdowns, trained in tracking to help find Alexander if he wanders off, give Alexander independence, and most of all give him a loving friend who loves him like we do…for the wonderful, God-given gift he is.

To make this happen, we need your help. We ask for donations, anything you can spare to help Alexander. Please send your tax-deductible donation payable directly to 4 Paws For Ability, 253 Dayton Ave, Xenia, Ohio 45385. Include Alexander Lubrant’s name on the memo portion of the check. An account has been established in his name. For more information on 4 Paws, go to www.4pawsforability.org, or contact us at (763) 531-0921; slubrant0921@msn.com.

Thank you and God Bless
Sally Lubrant, (Mom)

Subject: Good News! MBA Program added to Tuition Benefits
Submitter:
Sandra Hokanson, Director, Human Resources, Human Resources

Message: Dear Staff and Faculty:

Human Resources is pleased to announce the President’s Cabinet approved the addition of the MBA Program to our Tuition Benefit Program, effectively immediately.

Employees, through the tuition benefit policy, may now receive remission for the MBA Program at the regular graduate programs level of 75% remission for up to 2 classes per term, to a maximum of $5,250 per calendar year. The provisions of the tuition benefit policy apply. In addition, please note these details:
•benefit for employee-students will be limited to two per cohort.
•employees will be granted the tuition benefit on a first come, first served basis, as determined by the date the tuition benefit application is received in HR. In a situation where it is not possible to determine which applications arrived first, we would use seniority as a second layer of eligibility determination.

You can learn more about Augsburg College’s Tuition Benefit policy under HR’s public folder on the Orgs drive at HR/Public/Benefits/Tuition. If you would like more information about the MBA Program, go to http://www.augsburg.edu/mba or call Nate Gorr at x1390.

Don’t know who Crowded House is? Me either. Here’s the description from the Hennepin Theatre District website:

Crowded House formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985 and first tasted global success with their massive 1987 hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” They continued to have hits for a decade, including “Something So Strong,” “Weather With You” and “It’s Only Natural.” “Don’t Dream It’s Over” hit #2 on the American Top 40 and won the band Best New Artist at that year’s MTV Music Awards, while “Something” reached the #7 spot. They produced four studio albums and a best-of compilation.

“Time On Earth” is Crowded House’s first new studio album in 14 years, and features original, founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, along with former member Mark Hart and new drummer Matt Sherrod.
