Subject: Security Alert - Laptop Stolen in Memorial
Submitter:
John Pack, Director, Public Safety

Message: Laptop Computer Stolen from Workspace in Memorial Hall

Augsburg’s Department of Public Safety would like you to be aware of a burglary that occurred on campus. On Wednesday, April 11, between 11:50 am and 1:15 pm, a laptop computer was taken from a workspace in Memorial Hall. A navy blue backpack with gray trim was also taken. The workspace was locked, but there are signs that the latch may tampered with. It is also possible that the burglar went over the partial height wall.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department of Augsburg’s Department of Public Safety. For Police emergencies, you can call 911 from any phone. For non-emergency police service, call 311 from an off-campus phone or 9-311 from an on-campus phone. You can reach the department of Public Safety all day, every day by calling x1717 from any on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from any off-campus phone.

DPS encourages everyone to be mindful of the following tips:
• Report suspicious behavior to the Department of Public Safety at x1717.
• Keep your office locked whenever you leave, even if you only plan to be gone for a minute.
• Where possible, keep valuables in a locked drawer or cabinet.
• Regularly back-up all important information on your computer. While a stolen computer can be replaced, the data cannot. Talk to your LFC and be sure your data is backed-up.
• Do not hesitate to call Public Safety or the Police if strangers confront you.

Working together, we can prevent crime at Augsburg.

Subject: Mathematics (Statistics) Colloquium
Submitter:
Kenneth S Kaminsky, Professor, Mathematics

Message: Practically Effective Statistics - Daniel Kaplan, DeWitt Wallace Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College.

"If you learn statistics from a textbook, you may conclude that to be effective a statistical analysis has to be correct. But in real situations with real clients it's a little bit different: It's not enough to be right, you also have to be believed. The people who need to be convinced often know little about statistics and so you can't convince them by proof or by pointing to prestigious journals or texts. In the talk, I'll describe some of my experiences in statistical consulting relating to affirmative action enforcement, college admissions, and financial aid. I've had both successes and failures and I'll try to share what works and why."

Message: Sverdrup Public Lecture

"Exploring the Giant Magnetosphere of Jupiter"
April 16 - 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center; Parking in Lot L off of 25th Ave. and Riverside, Minneapolis.

Abstract: Jupiter is a planet of superlatives: it is the most massive planet in the solar system, rotates the fastest, has the strongest magnetic field, and has the most massive satellite system of any planet. These unique properties lead to active volcanoes on Io, a ton per second of sulfur and oxygen being spewed out of the moon, a vast population of energetic plasma trapped in the planet's strong magnetic field, and intense auroral emissions in Jupiter's polar atmosphere. The giant magnetosphere of Jupiter has been explored by telescopes on Earth, Hubble Space Telescope, several spacecraft flying past the planet plus the Galileo spacecraft that spent seven years in orbit. This talk will discuss our current understanding of this huge, dynamic structure and present what we hope to learn from the New Horizons spacecraft as it flies down Jupiter's magnetotail on its way to Pluto (spring 2007) and from the Juno mission (launch due in 2011) that will skim over Jupiter's poles.

Divisional Colloquium
“Women in Physics & Astronomy: Moving Beyond 'the Woman Problem'”
April 17 - Noon-1:00, Minneapolis Room, Christiansen Center; Parking in Lot L off of 25th Ave. and Riverside.

Abstract: Statistical studies of demographics by professional organizations such as the American Institute of Physics show practical reasons for moving from "how do we help these poor women" to "how to educate/hire/retain the talent we needed to supply a technical-trained workforce." Dr. Bagenal will discuss the professional pipeline, where it is leaky and how it can be fixed - including allowing for multiple pathways.

Biography: Fran Bagenal came to the US from England in 1976 to attend graduate school at MIT where she worked on data from the Voyager mission for her PhD. Her primary research interests are the magnetic fields of planets, the charged particles trapped in planetary magnetic fields and the interactions of moons with the particles and fields that surround them. She has been involved in the Voyager mission (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune), Galileo (Jupiter), Deep Space 1 (Comet Borrelly), the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Juno mission to Jupiter's polar regions. She is Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Funding for the Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Lecture Program made possible through the Sverdrup Endowment Fund, Augsburg College and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. For more information or to receive a poster of the Sverdrup Lecture call 612-330-1324 and leave your name, telephone number and mailing address and someone will return your call.

The last in a series of workshops intended to enable faculty to use a systematic, purposeful approach to revising, creating, and maintaining learning experiences. 3:30-5 in the Cedar Room

Faculty considering applying for Instructional and Course Design support for Summer 2007 are strongly encouraged to attend.

The designing professor: changing students on purpose April 24 and 25. Bring a learning experience you’ve been working on to dip your pedagogical toes into the waters of design. We’ll work with a process that starts by identifying the change(s) we want in our students and progresses systematically (but not too fast!) to creating experiences that not only change and empower students, but also enable us to develop a habit of reflective empathy in our work.

Subject: Process for search/appointment of Dean of College
Submitter:
Anthony A Bibus III, Professor, Social Work

Message: Dear Faculty Colleagues:

Faculty senators have been receiving questions and concerns regarding the process of evaluating Dean Farley's candidacy for permanent appointment as Dean of the College that was presented to the faculty at our April 11 meeting. Prior to the April 11 faculty meeting and subsequently, senators have been conferring in full consultation with Pres. Pribbenow in good faith on what in our mutual considered judgment would be the best process for the college. We also now recognize that we need more time and information to carry out our responsibilities and rights as a faculty and senate in the process.

In my capacity as president of the Faculty Senate, I have asked President Pribbenow if the process could be suspended for two weeks; due to the questions raised regarding faculty governance on this issue, he has agreed to this plan. This will give the Faculty Senate time to meet and confer, and if we decide to bring a further recommendation or motion to the full faculty, we could do so at the May 4 Final Faculty Meeting. (In accordance with the Faculty Constitution, a new motion would need to be on the agenda sent out before the final meeting.)

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me or any of the other members of the Faculty Senate with your thoughts, recommendations, questions, or concerns.

Subject: Get Outside: Sunday April 22 is Earth Day 2007
Submitter:
Lori Peterson, Assistant Professor, Business-MIS

Message: Spring in the Valley 2007, an Earth Day event, will be held at the private non-profit Silkesnas (silk-es-nas) Nature Preserve owned by Professor Lori Peterson & her husband Rob on Earth Day from 1-5pm. Activities are geared toward all ages and are held out of doors. Hiking on natural terrain of light difficulty is required. Visitors should plan to spend approximately two hours to take in all of the activities, including viewing the natural beauty of the area and visiting with and learning from the various subject matter experts volunteering at the Preserve.
The signature entrance activity involves planting a tree on site. Guests will be welcomed by Randy and Kathy Nyeggen, after which Randy (co-owner of Environmental Landscape Management in Hudson, WI) will acquaint them with the history and importance of white pines to the area, the life of a tree, and how best to care for pines. Not only is Randy an expert in this subject, but he truly loves the area, and this will come across in his presentation. When visitors leave for the day, Randy will equip them with a tree to take home and plant there.

Kathy Nyeggen will explain that the format for the day is a self guided nature tour, and she will highlight where presentations and demonstrations are being held throughout the Preserve. Boy Scout Troup #145 will provide assistance as trail guides. As guests travel through the Preserve, they will meet forester John Lenarz (presenting Goods From the Woods), glacier geology & wildflower buff Nancy Wellington (discussing What’s Underfoot), Rob Peterson (presenting Garbology), and Rick Remington from the Western Wisconsin Land Trust (discussing Trusting Your Land). Guests will also meet master woodworker Mark Nyeggen from A.J. Cabinetry, who will instruct them in making Earth Art, while Lori Peterson will provide them with information about exciting new developments in fuel and energy production with her talk Prairie Grass: It’s a Gas!

While en route and on foot on the nature trails, guests will encounter Knowing Your Bioregion, a self study set of questions providing learning and friendly competition! Lastly, visitors are invited to pull up a seat at a picnic table or on a hay bale in the barn to relax with refreshments provided by Our Coffee Barn http://ourcoffeebarn.com Our Coffee Barn will be showcasing Nicaragua SHG Jinotega Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee! While there, guests will meet Dr. Jude Rathburn from UW-River Falls, as she hosts the continuous playing of the documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and gathers visitor impressions and suggestions.

Spring in the Valley, produced and sponsored entirely by volunteers, is held annually in honor of Earth Day. The Silkesnas Preserve is located west of Spring Valley, WI on County Road CC; 1/3 mile south of the intersection of Highway 29 and county Road CC. Look for signs, and park on the roadside. Call 715-778-4898 or Augsburg ext. 1637 for more information. Silkesnas is named in honor of the Peterson’s family farm in Sweden, where sustainable logging activities continue today. At Silkesnas, “we leverage Wisconsin’s landscape to nurture the landscape of the human heart.” For more information about this or other Earth Day activities, visit www.earthday.net
