Message: The Colorful History & Culture of Guatemala

Explore the beautiful Guatemalan history and culture through images, stories, and textiles. In January, WEC senior Boyd Savage and Augsburg staff member Wendi Wheeler spent eight days in Guatemala with a group of students led by professor Elise Marubbio of the American Indian Studies, Women's Studies, and English departments and Fidel Xinico, the program coordinator with the Center for Global Education. Wendi will share highlights of their experience, and Boyd will show some of the marvelous textiles he acquired on the trip.

Guatemalan-inspired refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. The presentation begins at 4 p.m.

This substantial, longitudinal, and evidence drive collaboration offers some new insights and findings about traditional age student academic experiences. These awards recognize exemplary work by faculty and staff in support of teaching and learning at Augsburg College. Up to three awards are available annually. They are in the areas of teaching, advising/mentoring, and service to students/other direct contributions to teaching and learning. Each award carries a stipend of $1000, public recognition and celebration.

Awards are based on evidence of student learning and student satisfaction provided by students, colleagues, and documentation, weighted appropriately for each of the three areas of excellence. The selection process is as follows:

• The deadline for nominations is Friday February 23, 2007. Nominations should be sent to Terry Martin as an e-mail attachment martin@augsburg.edu or campus box 97.
Questions can be directed to Diane Pike at pike@augsburg.edu

• Nomination forms consist of a one-page letter identifying the nominee and providing a 1-2 paragraph rationale for the nomination; in addition, nominators are asked to submit 2-4 names of students and/or colleagues who can speak to nominee’s work.

• The Selection Panel conduct confidential interviews with members of the community, review information and make awards no later than March 26h. Awardees will be acknowledged at the Honors Convocation and at other events.

The Selection Panel includes: the Dean of the College, the Dean of Adult and Graduate Programs, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), one student, and at least one staff member. This is a juried process.

The criteria for the awards are:

Teaching
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through the:
• Strength and quality of student support,
• Collection and review of syllabi, course materials and grading patterns reflecting best practices,
• Command over material, both content and pedagogy as supported by department chair and colleagues.
Mentor/Advising
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through the:
• Sustained conversation about and attention to vocation, career and student success overall.
• Guiding of students through the processes leading to successful and timely graduation and student recognition of the attention and care provided by the nominee
Service to Students/Other Direct Contributions to Teaching and Learning
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through:
• Work that contributes to students’ academic development, growth and success
• Contributions to a positive, academic campus environment in a direct way

Message: Message: Augsburg College is hosting the annual ACTC English Majors Conference on Friday, 23 February, beginning with a half-hour reception at 1 pm in the Student Gallery just off the Christensen Center Coffee Lounge. President Pribbenow and Dean Farley will welcome English majors and faculty from all of the ACTC colleges.

The formal program begins at 1:30 and runs till 5 pm in the Marshall and Century Rooms, with a short break at 3 p.m.; there will be 90-minute sessions on British Lit, American Lit, World/Multicultural Lit, and Media/Theory. The conference closes with a buffet dinner for participants that also includes readings by ACTC student writers and our Visiting Guest Writers Ingrid Wendt and Ralph Salisbury.

Augsburg presenters include Curtiss Schreiber (Am Lit), Katie Winter (World/Multicultural Lit), Abraham Piper (Brit Lit), Joe Lueben (Media/Theory), and Jeremy Anderson (Creative Writing). Subject: The Economics of Global Climate Change

Message: Augsburg Students are invited to attend the public forum sponsored by the Minnesota International Center on Tuesday, February 27 with His Excellency Alan Charlton, Deputy Head of Mission for the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. Ambassador Charlton will be speaking on the economic impact of climate change and the British government' s international efforts to improve the global environment. This event is free for students!

A recent report on global warming by Sir Nicholas Stern, head of the British Government Economic Service, outlines not only the environmental aspects of global warming, but also estimates the negative impact on world' s gross domestic product. The Stern report is the first major economic analysis of the potential costs of tackling, and of failing to tackle climate change.

In Washington since May 2004, Ambassador Charlton is the Deputy Head of Mission for the British Embassy. A member of the British Diplomatic Service since 1986, Ambassador Charlton has served in Germany, the Balkans, Jordan, and Israel.
