Message: "The Road": From Here to Where?

The dates of the annual Life of the Mind Retreat are the Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon leading into Spring Break, March 16-17 . The retreat is at the Luxe Conference Center in nearby Chaska. We can accommodate 20-24 faculty and staff; there are still a few spaces remaining.

Cormac McCarthy's short, well-reviewed apocalyptic novel "The Road" is the centerpiece of the retreat and has already attracted colleagues from the humanities, arts, sciences, and professional studies. We will couple this with some short selections from scientist Richard Dawkins' provocative book on atheism, "The God Delusion," and Sam Harris's "The End of Faith," as well as some counter-responses. We'd love your suggestions for additional readings, counter-readings, films, etc. And we're likely resurrecting the 1983 film "Testament" as a complement to McCarthy's vision.

Please join us and encourage your colleagues to attend. Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer, the retreat is a great way to meet colleagues across campus and to reconnect with old friends. The food and company and talk will be great.

Copies of “The Road” are available for retreat participants. Because of the cost of the retreat facility, we need firm commitment and early registration for the overnight stay. If you plan to join us for this intellectually stimulating gathering, please contact Terry Martin (martin@augsburg.edu, x1229) at the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Subject: Could You Work at Riverside Bible Camp?
Submitter:
Ross Murray, Campus Ministry Associate; Tutoring Services Coordinator; , Campus Ministry and Academic Skills Office

Message: Many of your fellow Auggies worked at Riverside Bible Camp in Story City, Iowa. Four current Augsburg students have worked there: David Schwendtner, Cara Steichen, Carl Grulke, and Kelsey Erickson-Grulke. Also, alumnae Jenna (Bracken) Held worked there. More Augsburg students have volunteered there for a weekend or two. At least three of your classmates are already planning on working there this summer, too.

This fall, a group of Augsburg FCA members traveled to Riverside for their first annual Young Adult Retreat. They all enjoyed it. Also, Riverside's drama ministry inspired the Mime which has been presented on campus.

Riverside's Dan Scharnhorst will be the representative at the Camp fair. You can meet him in the East Commons on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 4 - 6:30p.m., along with all the other camps.

I’m still accepting nominations/stories from your camps. Tomorrow, we will unveil where President Pribbenow worked!

Up to 18 students can receive stipends to work at camp this summer. These $500 stipends will give a boost to your camp pay. Get an application at the Camp Fair, or request one from Ross Murray in the Campus Ministry Office. Ross’ phone is 612-330-1151 and his email is murray@augsburg.edu

On Tuesday, February 20, Augsburg Alum Tony Schaden will share his experiences working at Camp Wapogasset in chapel at 11:20. Come to hear his experience, and wear your own camp shirt!
