Message: From Joan Kunz…

Greetings Natural and Social Science Colleagues,

At this busy time of year, I am writing to ask you to save the date January 11, 2007 for a working meeting of the Natural and Social Sciences Division. The current plan is to begin at 11 a.m in East Commons and end around 2 p.m., with lunch to be served in between. The topic of this working meeting concerns assessment of LAF courses and their goals and objectives. While the focus is on LAF courses, this meeting will be helpful to you whether you teach LAF courses or not. The LAFs have published statements concerning the goals and desired outcomes of the respective LAFs, and which also reflect the common goals of good higher education for all our students. What information have you collected in the teaching of LAF courses? What does this information tell you about the goals and objectives that have been set out by the LAFs? How can your course's information feed into programmatic level goals and objectives? What happens next to/in the LAFs? A Preliminary agenda is given below. A more detailed agenda will follow, closer to the meeting date.

The Bush grant may provide some honorarium to compensate you for your time and efforts.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
Joan

The preliminary agenda for January 11, 2007:
1. Overview of assessment

2. A review of the LAF statements and learning outcomes
Much work has been completed here, with thanks to the past Collaboratives. Success stories around assessment issues will be shared. Work here is not yet complete.

3. What Programmatic Assessment will need

4. Re-forming the BSS and NSM Collaboratives, with a focus on assessment

5. Lunch
You will have topics to discuss over lunch, perhaps as departments; else as BSS or NSM groups.

6. Break-out group discussions continue

7. Final oral reports of small groups to the whole (a la Jeanne Narum, for those familiar with PKAL)

RSVP to Terry Martin, x1229.

Subject: Cleaning out those bookshelves?
Submitter:
Ron Kurpiers, Collection Management Librarian, Library

Message: Lindell Library participates in “Better World Books Library Discards & Donations” program. Better World Books is a book recycling venture. They market the books to 14 online booksellers. When the items Lindell Library donates are sold, a share of the profit comes back to the library with a share of the profit also going to Books for Africa, our selected literacy partner. In addition, a number of books are sent to Africa by Better World Books.

When the library initially receives any donation, library staff reviews each item for possible addition to the library collection. The items not selected for the collection are boxed and shipped to Better World Books, at their expense.

Better World Books accepts most books, CDs, DVDs and VHS cassettes.

They don’t accept mass-market paperbacks, magazines/periodicals, or encyclopedia sets older than 2001.

Please contact me if you have items to donate or want more information.
