Subject: REMINDER: Lot H closed for Gateway construction

Submitter:
John Pack, Director, Public Safety

Message: As most of you are aware Lot H, also know as the North Faculty Staff Lot, is closed for construction of the Gateway building. Faculty and staff parking displaced by this project has shifted to Lot L. Lot L is the newly constructed parking lot just east of the athletic field.

Starting Monday, September 4, and continuing until Friday, September 8, the Department of Public Safety will have an employee stationed at the old entrance to Lot H. The employee will be on-site from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.. If you are unsure how to get to the new parking lot, feel free to swing by the old Lot H entrance to pick-up a map and have your questions answered. You can also call the Department of Public Safety at 612-330-1717 with your parking questions. That phone is answered all day, every day.

Subject: Workshop on Universal Instructional Design

Submitter:
Anthony A Bibus III, Professor, Social Work

Message: Colleagues are welcome to attend the workshop on Universal Instructional Design with social worker Barb Blacklock, Disability Specialist at the University of Minnesota, on Wednesday, September 6, 3-5 p.m. in the Minneapolis Room. This workshop is sponsored and funded by the Center for Teaching and Learning and hosted by the Social Work Department.

Barb will present: "A Team Approach: Using the Principles of Universal Instructional Design to Create Access for All Students, Including Students with Disabilities"

Universal Instructional Design (UID) is an approach to teaching that consists of proactive design and the use of inclusive instructional strategies that benefit a broad range of learners including students with disabilities. The eight principles for applying UID presented in this session were compiled by merging Chickering and Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education and North Carolina State University's Center for Universal Design's Seven Principles for Universal Design. The presenter will share these principles and highlight what is often the most difficult principle to implement, "Determining Essential Course or Program Requirements". Opportunities will be provided for participants to apply tools for determining essential course and program requirements and how to take the next step, which is to identify technical standards for their programs.

Submitter:
John Knight, Associate Director, Center for Faith and Learning

Message: CEO, husband, father, community volunteer – is there a connection between persevering in one’s daily responsibilities and commitment to faith? Can success and vocation go together? Come hear Michael R. Good, President and CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty in New Jersey, discuss his journey in life at the kick-off of this year’s faith@work! leadership speakers series on Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 7 – 8 a.m. at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church.

Augsburg College and St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church have partnered to promote faith@work! to encourage us all to more effectively live out our faith where we work and live, especially those in leadership positions. Directions can be found at (www.spdlc.org/about/directions.htm).

During his career at Augsburg, Good was a two time NAIA All American in Wrestling, twice captain of the wrestling team and was recognized as the Honor Athlete in 1971. He is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Sotheby's International Realty Affiliates, Inc. In 1991, Good was inducted into the Augsburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was elected to the Board of Regents in 2001.

A time for questions will follow Mike's speech.

Call John Knight at x1351 or faith@augsburg.edu if you have any questions. These events are free and open to all who are interested!

Subject: Augsburg Recycles!

Submitter:
Thomas S Ruffaner, Day Custodial Supervisor, Custodial Services

Message: Augsburg has been recycling for over 14 years and we continue to increase the amount of recyclables that we rescue from the trash stream. Recycling is a team effort here on campus and everyone can be part of the team. Augsburg saves money on its trash hauling costs by recycling paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and electronics. We also have our garden waste sent out to BFI composting stations for eventual reuse. Last year we recycled approximately 170 tons of paper and cardboard and 300 cubic yards of cans and bottles. We can do even better this year if we just take a little time to think and put recyclables in the proper containers. All cans and bottles can be recycled in the blue containers with the two-holed green tops and all paper and cardboard can be placed in the blue containers with the blue-slotted tops or in the large, square blue containers around campus. The Augsburg Recycling policy & procedures can be found in the Custodial public folder in ORGS.
