Subject: Lilly Spring Faculty/Staff Retreat- May 10-11

Submitter:
Ron Petrich, Assistant Professor, Education

Message: The theme for this spring's Lilly retreat is "finding our way home again". We will use spring themes to examine how we can connect who we are with what we do. Selected readings, poems, video, music and nature will serve as catalysts helping us to slow down, to hear ourselves, and to have significant conversations with each other. All activities are invitational and personal time is scheduled into the retreat.

The retreat will be held at the Mount Olivet Retreat Center located twenty-five minutes south of the Twin Cities. The opening session will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday May 10th and we will depart after Lunch on May 11th. You are encouraged to stay overnight. May is a wonderful time to reflect on the past year and to plant seeds for the future.

Join us for thoughtful conversation, generative questions, and a wonderful opportunity to get to know your colleagues. For further information or to RSVP contact Ron Petrich at 330-1593 or petrich@augsburg.edu

Subject: Spring Semester Grades Due 12 May

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: GRADES ARE DUE ON OR BEFORE May 12, 2006.

Do not turn in grades late. Late grades cause problems for students requiring the grades for reimbursement, scholarship, graduation and admission to other programs.

GRADE ENTRY SCREEN
* Report a grade for every student on the list (except where - W - is displayed).
* For students from one of the other ACTC colleges, please provide the Registrarās Office with their grade.
* Please enter grades by May 12, 2006 or earlier! PLEASE NO LATE GRADES!
* Please identify students that have stopped attending class and the date of last attendance.

Please contact your departments Liaison for Computing person if you have a question on your PIN. For those needing specific directions, they are available on-line at:

http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/registrar/index.html

Click on Faculty Grade Entry Procedures, other useful information can be found by clicking on Registrarās New Faculty Handbook also.

Letter grades (ABCDF) are not used except for ACTC students. The following grading system is in effect:
4.0 Achieves highest standards of excellence
3.5
3.0 Achieves above basic course standards
2.5
2.0 Achieves basic standards for course
1.5
1.0 Performance below basic course standards
0.5
0.0 Unacceptable performance (no credit for the course)
P (2.0 or above) Meets minimum passing standard
N (Below 2.0) Does not meet minimum passing standard (no credit and non-punitive: not computed in grade point average)

If a student fails to report for a final examination, he or she should
receive a grade of 0.0 for that examination when you compute the final grade.

INCOMPLETE GRADES

* An incomplete grade, or - I, should be given only in the case of extreme emergency. To receive an incomplete grade, a student must receive permission of the instructor of the course; must file a form (available in the Enrollment Center or on-line at the above web address) stating the reasons for the request, the work required to complete the course, the plan and date for completing the work, and comments from the instructor; and must return the form to the Registrar's Office by the time grades are due for the term (May 12, 2006).
* The necessary work must be completed in enough time to allow evaluation of the work by the instructor and filing of a grade before the final day of the following Semester.
* If the work is not completed by that date, the grade for the course becomes a 0.0.

DIRECTED STUDY, INDEPENDENT STUDY, OR INTERNSHIP

* If a Directed Study, Independent Study, or Internship is to be extended over a second term, indicate this by a grade of - X. Please remind students receiving an - X - that they are expected to continue communication and demonstrate satisfactory progress with their instructor in order to receive a credit and grade at the end of that term. They must complete the study within one year of their initial registration; after that, a new registration is necessary.

* An - X - grade can only be used for a Directed Study, Independent Study, and Internship unless prior arrangements have been made with the Registrar's Office.

AUDIT

Please inform the Registrarās Office via email if expectations not met for a student auditing your class. A - V - (audit) is listed on the grade entry screen. If expectations have been met, the course will be listed on the student's record as having been audited. If expectations have not been met, the course will be listed with a grade of - W (withdrawn).

VERY IMPORTANT

Grade are due in the Office of the Registrar no later than May 12, 2006. To comply with Federal Student Aid Regulations: If you have a student that stopped attending your class and you have assigned a grade of 0.0 or - N, please enter the date they last attended your class. Thank You.

Subject: Required Information -- On-line Course Evalutation

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: On-line Course Evaluation Information

April 10, 2006

Dear Colleagues:

As we complete WEC Winter Trimester (54% response rate overall-moving in the right direction) and move to Spring terms, we offer this update and set of recommendations for conducting course evaluations this next round; the day term dates are from April 14 to April 28. Spring WEC dates will be advertised at the end of May.

First, we and some of the research suggest that a clear statement to students of the value and use of this information is critical. We believe such a uniform approach may bolster response rates and may provide a consistent campus-wide approach to prompting students to fill out the evaluation. If students begin to hear a shared sense of commitment to what we learn from their efforts, that common commitment can strengthen the project. Also, we encourage you to individualize your discussion with students by sharing with them how you use this information; you might perhaps indicate what you changed last time for this term and highlight any particular type of feedback that might be useful.

Thus, we strongly encourage you to engage the following practices to increase the chances of a good response rate.

- Explain the shared rationale and then offer your individual comments. Be constructive and thank them for taking the time to do this.

The statement below is a concise reminder for students of the value we place in their helpful and honest feedback. Please consider using it as a basis for your class conversation.

-The faculty of Augsburg College value the opinions of the students who take our courses, and we try to improve our courses and our teaching in response to their thoughtful evaluations. Please take the time in the next two weeks to complete the on-line evaluation of your courses. Your response will be read by your professors and by college administrators. We appreciate your effort; it helps support the collegeās dedication to and understanding of excellent and diverse teaching.ä

- Remind students twice--once at the beginning of week one and again at the start of week two. Remind students about the multiple locations to access the form: email and on their Moodle site.

Other suggestions are:

- Consider letting the class out 10-15 minutes early one day in exchange for the time you are asking them to put in completing the evaluation. This seemed to work incidentally and we are interested in seeing if it makes a difference.
- Next term, put "course evaluation completion" on your syllabus as part of the last weeks of course work; this may help to send the message of importance and expectation.

The On-line Working Group continues to monitor the project and will be meeting in May to do more extensive data analysis and work on next steps in the pilot. If you have interest or comments, please do not hesitate to contact Diane (pike@augsburg.edu) or Scott krajewsk@augsburg.edu) Any member of the committee is happy to talk with you.

You will have access to your evals right after your grades are turned in-there will be no delay as there was from Fall.

Finally, there is no single form that accomplishes what we should expect in terms of understanding how well we serve students. Please use paper and pencil in-class forms as needed to collect information about specialized questions regarding your course; this data can important information for you but need not be institutionally processed. Any time after about 2/3's of the way through course should get you much of what you need. We ask you not to do any sort of evaluation during final exam slots.

Thank you for your efforts in sustaining and improving teaching and learning at Augsburg College.

Scott Krajewski, Diane Pike, Stu Stoller, Pam Weiss,
Carol Knicker, Ken Erikson

Subject: Correction: Peter Hutchinson here May 2

Submitter:
Randall Davidson, Fine Arts Manager, Music

Message: Peter Hutchinson, an independent candidate for Governor of Minnesota, will be on campus to speak to the community on partisan politics and Minnesota's future. He will speak in the East Commons on TUESDAY, MAY 2 beginning at 11.30 a.m. and will take questions. Members of the Augsburg community are invited to bring their lunches and join in the conversation.

Peter Hutchinson was born in Faribault in 1949. Even though Peter's family moved around the country, he always called Minnesota home. In 1975, after graduating from Dartmouth College with a bachelor's degree in Government and Urban Studies and Princeton University with a master's degree in Public Affairs and Urban Planning, he came home.

Peter served as a deputy mayor under Minneapolis Mayor Al Hofstede, working on housing, neighborhood preservation, municipal finance and transportation. He was named vice president of external affairs, Dayton Hudson Corporation (now Target Corporation), where he was Vice President of External Affairs and Chairman of the Dayton Hudson Foundation. Under his leadership, the Foundation effectively focused its efforts on getting results, improving the communities in which Dayton Hudson operated and ensuring that the over $110 million it distributed nationwide were well-spent.

Peter was named Commissioner of Finance by Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich in 1989. He came away from that experience determined to help governments find ways to use taxpayer dollars more effectively. In 1991, along with two partners, Peter formed The Public Strategies Group, Inc. (PSG). Peter and PSG have reformed, reinvented and redesigned government services and systems in hundreds of states, cities, counties and schools across the country and throughout the world. In 2004, he and his PSG partner, David Osborne, shared their ideas about practical innovation in government in the book, THE PRICE OF GOVERNMENT: Getting the Results We Need in an Age of Permanent Fiscal Crisis. (2004), available in paperback from Amazon.com.

Peter is married to Karla Ekdahl, a well-known advocate for the arts and children's issues. She is Board Chair of Project SUCCESS, which serves 8,000 inner-city middle and high school students a year, guiding them toward meaningful futures. They have two college-age daughters, Emily and Julia. Aside from family and work, Peter's passions include biking, reading, traveling, and physical challenges in the outdoors (including Outward Bound twice and climbing Mount Ranier).
