Subject: Information about mumps

Submitter:
Ann L Garvey, Dean of Students, Academic and Student Affairs

Message: As upper midwest health agencies receive more reports about cases of mumps, we wanted to provide the following information (taken from the Minnesota Department of Health Website:

What is mumps?
Mumps is a viral infection that primarily affects the parotid or other salivary glands.

What are the symptoms of mumps?
Most common symptoms include swollen glands in front of and below the ear, headache, low-grade fever, and earache.

What are the complications associated with mumps?
Up to 30% of all people infected with the mumps virus do not have symptoms. Orchitis (swelling of the testicles) is a common symptom in males after puberty. Rarely, swelling of
the spinal cord and brain (encephalitis) occurs.

How is mumps diagnosed?
Mumps is diagnosed with a blood test specific for mumps antibody. Health care providers will also collect a nose, urine, or throat swab to further test for the virus.

How is mumps spread?
Mumps is spread when a person with mumps sneezes or coughs mumps virus into the air and another person breathes the virus in. Touching droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person also spreads mumps.

How long is a person able to spread mumps?
Mumps can normally be spread 3 days before symptoms appear through about 4 days after. Mumps is most contagious 48 hours before the illness begins.
What can be done to prevent the spread of mumps?

The best way to prevent mumps is to be fully immunized. Persons who have mumps should stay at home for 5 days after onset of swelling so that they do not spread it to others.

Is there a treatment for mumps?
There is no treatment for mumps, only symptom care.

Is there a vaccine for mumps?
Mumps vaccine is contained in the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). Two doses of the vaccine are needed for long-term protection.

Minnesota state law requires that all children 15 months of age or older, in childcare settings or schools, be vaccinated against mumps or have a legal exemption.

If you have questions or comments , contact idepcweb@health.state.mn.us or call 651-201-5414 (TTY: 651-201-5797) for the MDH Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control Division.

Participate in a study at the Carlson School and make some money!

We invite you to participate in a study conducted by Prof. Avner Ben-Ner and Mr. Freyr Halldorsson of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, just down the street from Augsburg College. The objective of the study is to understand how decisions of different people interact with each other. The study is funded by the Russell Sage Foundation.

Participation in the study is completely anonymous and confidential. You will never be asked for your name, and no outcomes of the study can be associated with individual participants. The study consists of making decisions on computers, and takes about one hour to complete. Participants will receive $10 at the completion of the experiment, and additional earnings (up to $40, but typically less), depending on decisions made by you and other participants.

To register for the study go to http://test.csom.umn.edu/dmexperiment/. You will be asked to read and agree to a consent form, fill out a survey and personality test, and choose a time for your participation in the experiment. This step will take approximately 30 minutes. There are several time slots available at this time on the West Bank campus on Friday, April 21 and Saturday April 22 (as participants register for the experiment, some time slots may become unavailable, but please check back as new sessions may open).

After you register at http://test.csom.umn.edu/dmexperiment/ and select a session in which to participate, location information for the experiment will be sent to you by email.
