Subject: Art, Truth, & Politics: Conversation on Vocation

Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 April 2006, in OM 18, ENG 480: Theory and Criticism is hosting a Critical Conversation on Vocation focused on dramatist Harold Pinter's Nobel Lecture: "Art, Truth, and Politics." In preparation for our 90-minute discussion (we have more time than that if we need to run over), we would like participants to go to www.nobelprize.org, to watch the 46-minute video of the speech, and, if they like, to download and printout the text of the speech. Watching the video is a powerful experience, because Pinter has 'engineered' his performance. While we might see a bit of the video to start, we don't want to rely on the internet stream when we gather. Everyone interested and able to come is welcome; if you have questions or plan to bring a class or small group, please contact Doug Green (x1187, green@augsburg.edu).

Come visit us during National Library Week in person or at www.augsburg.edu/library.

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables
Abstracts due April 7

On Wednesday April 19 we will host the Faculty Scholarship Roundtables. Please consider making a presentation in a roundtable setting on your current research, scholarship (broadly defined) and professional work. In particular, we hope this will become a forum for those recently returned from sabbatical (last fall and last spring) to share their learning with the campus; we hope to see most of you at this opportunity. Finally, this is a critical opportunity for all of us to model life long learning by attending these events and knowing what we are about as a college. Invitations to all are forthcoming. Abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage, CTL public folder or by calling x1229.

Sponsored by The Center for Teaching and Learning, The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity, and The Fine Arts Office

Subject: ACTC Bus Schedule for 2006-07

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: The ACTC intercampus bus schedule will change beginning in the fall. The new schedule can be found at http://www.associatedcolleges-tc.org/bussched2.htm . Students will need to be aware of the new schedule when planning to use the bus for cross registration in 2006 - 2007. I would appreciate it if you could inform the students in the appropriate methods for your campus.

The reason for the schedule change is that the St. Catherine intercampus bus is being merged with the ACTC intercampus bus beginning this summer. The primary effect during the normal day is an additional stop on the St. Catherine Minneapolis campus and a slightly longer time for each bus circle. We have also added additional time into the bus schedule late in the afternoon to reflect the realities of traffic. The schedule for the St. Catherine intercampus bus will remain the same as the current schedule in the evening and on days when the ACTC bus does not operate, but it will use the ACTC buses.

Subject: American Jew speaks for Palestinian Rights

Submitter:
Bradley P Holt, Professor, Religion

Message: Dr. Ned Hanauer, a nationally known expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, will be speaking at Augsburg on Wednesday, April 5, at 3:30 in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center. His topic will be "After the Palestinian & Israeli Elections: What Are the Peace Prospects?"

Edmund Hanauer is the director of SEARCH for Justice and Equality in Palestine/Israel (SEARCH). He has a BA from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from American University. His dissertation focused on the relationship of American Jews to the state of Israel.

Before starting SEARCH in 1972, Hanauer taught political science, history, and international relations at Babson College as well as at the University of Maryland's European division.

In addition to numerous lectures at leading universities and talks to Jewish, Christian, civic, educational, and human rights groups, Hanauer has spoken twice to the Nieman Fellows in Journalism at Harvard and twice to the State Departmentās Open Forum of the Secretary of State. His address to the City Club of Cleveland was televised nationally three times by C-SPAN. The City Club talk as well as a speech to the Cambridge Forum were broadcast by radio stations across the US.

Hanauerās articles on the Arab-Israeli conflict have appeared in 30 major newspapers, and he has been interviewed numerous times on TV and radio, including National Public Radio.

COMMENTS ON NED HANAUER

"Over the years I have found Ned Hanauer to be not only a source of reliable information on the Middle East, but a passionate believer in creating the conditions for social justice in that violence-filled region. His information is always solid and unbiased." - Colman McCarthy, nationally syndicated columnist

"All three of these individuals [Noam Chomsky, Alfred Lilienthal, Elmer Berger] get Īspecialā mention in The Campaign to Discredit Israel (Washington: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC], 1983). The only other Jewish critic of Zionism who merited a special heading was Edmund Hanauer, the founder of Search for Justice and Equality in Palestine/Israel." - Edward Corrigan, "Jewish Criticism of Zionism," American-Arab Affairs, Winter 1990-1991

"All our listeners remark on what a 'wonderfully balanced' presentation Dr. Hanauer made and how he clarified and summarized a complex set of issues to further their understanding of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict." - Cambridge Forum, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Submitter:
Sarah E Teich, Student

Message: Tickets are now on sale for the Augsburg College Theatre Department's mainstage production of "Metamorphoses," written by Mary Zimmerman and directed by Darcey Engen.

The play "Metamorphoses" is based on Ovid's ancient myths and uses contemporary language and imagery to reveal the joys and sorrows of humankind. Staged around a pool of water and on aerial fabrics, the play engages the human need for imagination and theatre. The visceral use of the theatrical staging, modern narrative, and ancient legend ignites deep reflection on the past while speaking to audiences today.

April 9 and 23 at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $2 Augsburg College Students; $8 ACTC faculty, staff, and students; $10 general public.

Subject: Ginther named MIAC Pitcher of the Week
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Darren Ginther named MIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/040306ginther.html

MINNEAPOLIS (4/3/06) -- Augsburg College baseball player Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

In Saturday's MIAC-opening doubleheader at No. 16-ranked St. Thomas, Ginther threw a four-hit shutout, his third career shutout, to lead Augsburg to a 1-0 win in the first contest, part of an Auggie split with the Tommies. Ginther collected three strikeouts while walking four and hitting one batter in the complete-game effort. It was just the second Augsburg win over St. Thomas in the teams' last 30 meetings dating to 1992.

The Auggies faced bases-loaded situations twice in the game, but Ginther was able to force a groundout and strikeout to end the Tommie threats. Ginther also had an RBI on a groundout at the plate in the second game, an 8-6 Auggie loss.

So far this season, Ginther has a 3-1 pitching record in five starts with a 2.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts. At the plate, Ginther is hitting .423 with 12 RBI, 11 extra-base hits (seven doubles, four triples) and a .712 slugging percentage.

Ginther, a third baseman/pitcher, transferred to Augsburg in 2004 after playing his freshman campaign at Division I Valparaiso (Ind.). He was one of the top hitters in the MIAC in 2005, finishing with a .413 average to go with team highs in hits (59), runs (35), extra-base hits (17), slugging percentage (.608) and on-base percentage (.494). He was Augsburg's fourth .400 hitter since 1988. He finished the regular season with eight doubles, seven triples and two homers. As Augsburg's No. 2 starting pitcher, Ginther finished with a 4.10 ERA and 6-3 record in 12 starts. In MIAC play, Ginther hit .433 -- the third-best batting average in MIAC games -- to go with 14 RBI, a .612 slugging percentage (12th in the MIAC) and a .500 on-base percentage (fourth in the MIAC). He had a 4-3 record and 4.28 ERA in eight MIAC pitching starts.

An All-MIAC first-team selection in 2005, Ginther also earned American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Midwest Region second-team honors as a third baseman. A secondary education/social studies major with a 3.81 grade-point average, Ginther was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Baseball first team and Academic All-District V first team in 2005.

Augsburg, now 10-6-1 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play, hosts Hamline in an MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday (4/5) at 2:30 p.m. at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
