Subject: Learning As You Go Workshop

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:
Thursday, April 6
3:30-5:30 in the Marshall Room
Facilitated by Velma Lashbrook and Diane Pike

Please join us for an interactive workshop which will engage participants in strategies for finding out what is working in a course, how students are experiencing the course, and what adjustments might need to be made while a course is running. These activities lend themselves to learning for both the instructor and the students. References, examples, and experiential education are modeled in this session. New, middle and senior faculty especially invited.

Please join us. To reserve a place call x1229 or e-mail to martin@augsburg.edu

Subject: War in Iraq Documentary and Community Discussion

Submitter:
Hannah G Glusenkamp, Student

Message: Please join us on Wednesday, April 5th at 6 p.m. in Science 123 for a "War in Iraq" Awareness Event. There will be a special screening of the 18 minute documentary, "Caught in the Crossfire," made by American and Iraqi filmmakers, which brings us the untold story of the destruction in Falluja. The night will also include an art display and sale by adult and children artists from Iraq. Following the film we will have a group discussion to speak about how we as a community can be aware and active citizens with relation to the war our country is fighting.

Free and Open to All. Donations will be accepted on behalf of International Peace Angels, an organization that aids displaced Iraqi citizens.

Look for tabling with more information in Christensen on Tuesday April 4, Wednesday April 5 and Thursday April 6.

Questions? Contact: glusenka@augsburg.edu

Subject: Friday Seminar, April 7 - Writing Feminst Fiction

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: Friday Seminar, April 7, Writing Feminist Fiction:

An Aspiring Author's Story with Wendi Wheeleer

What is feminist fiction? What does it mean? How does one write it? Drawing on her experiences as a women's studies major and a wannabe English major, Wendi Wheeler will talk about what writing feminist fiction means to her. She will
share some of her work-in-progress, a collection of short stories about the choices women make when facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Wendi's work has been published in obscure places like the Twin Cities' Real Estate Journal and the Augsburg Echo. Her poetry received a 2005 Engman Award.

Lindell Library 301
Refreshments are served at 3:30; the presentation begins at 4 p.m.

Subject: Get connected this National Library Week

Submitter:
Jane Ann Nelson, Director Lib Svcs, Library

Message: Think you're connected? You've got a cell phone. You've got a laptop. You've got an Ipod. But unless you're connected to Lindell Library, you may not know what you're missing.

One of the biggest myths around is that everything is on the Internet and that it's free. The fact is, you'll find little information on the Web before 1975 and very little serious research available for free. Lindell Library offers vast collections of books and other reference materials, recordings and videos. The library also has an extensive collection of online journals and databases to meet the specialized needs of student and faculty researchers. Some are available on the Web, but at a steep price. So get really connected-and for free-at www.augsburg.edu/library.

Subject: Conversation on Vocation: Art, Truth, and Politics

Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 April 2006, in OM 18, ENG 480: Theory and Criticism is hosting a Critical Conversation on Vocation focused on dramatist Harold Pinter's Nobel Lecture: "Art, Truth, and Politics." In preparation for our 90-minute discussion (we have more time than that if we need to run over), we would like participants to go to www.nobelprize.org, to watch the 46-minute video of the speech, and, if they like, to download and printout the text of the speech. Watching the video is a powerful experience, because Pinter has 'engineered' his performance. While we might see a bit of the video to start, we don't want to rely on the internet stream when we gather. Everyone interested and able to come is welcome; if you have questions or plan to bring a class or small group, please contact Doug Green (x1187, green@augsburg.edu).

Subject: Passover Seder at Bethany Lutheran Church

Submitter:

Subject: Financial Aid Awards--New Process for 2006-07!

Submitter:
Shana Erickson, Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, Enrollment Center

Message: The Enrollment Center is pleased to introduce a new way for you to see your financial aid award letter for the 2006-07 school year. You will receive notice of your award as follows:

1. After we have received all of your application materials (which are due April 15th, 2006) and you have been awarded, you will receive an email on your Augsburg account that will direct you to the Enrollment Center's website.

2. On that site, you will be asked to log-in using your AugNet username and password.

3. After successful log-in, you will have the ability to see your financial aid award information, specifically broken down by term. You will also have the ability to view both documents we have received, and those that our office still needs you to submit. In addition, we will provide directions and links to apply for loans, and you will also be able to see messages specific to your award. As the year progresses, we expect to add the ability to track your loan status through this on-line database.

We are confident you will find this process user friendly and much better than the paper process of past years. You will have quicker access to your award information, and it is more secure since nothing is sent through the mail. PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR AUGSBURG E-MAIL ACCOUNT OFTEN, EVEN THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER. If you have any questions about this new process, please don't hesitant to contact the Enrollment Center: (612) 330-1046 or enroll@augsburg.edu.

Subject: PEACE IN ISRAEL & PALESTINE?

Submitter:
Bradley P Holt, Professor, Religion

Message: Dr. Ned Hanauer, a nationally known expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, will be speaking at Augsburg on Wednesday, April 5, at 3:30 in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center. His topic will be "After the Palestinian & Israeli Elections: What Are the Peace Prospects?"

Edmund Hanauer is the director of SEARCH for Justice and Equality in Palestine/Israel (SEARCH). He has a BA from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from American University. His dissertation focused on the relationship of American Jews to the state of Israel.

Before starting SEARCH in 1972, Hanauer taught political science, history, and international relations at Babson College as well as at the University of Maryland's European division.

In addition to numerous lectures at leading universities and talks to Jewish, Christian, civic, educational, and human rights groups, Hanauer has spoken twice to the Nieman Fellows in Journalism at Harvard and twice to the State Department's Open Forum of the Secretary of State. His address to the City Club of Cleveland was televised nationally three times by C-SPAN. The City Club talk as well as a speech to the Cambridge Forum were broadcast by radio stations across the US.

Hanauer's articles on the Arab-Israeli conflict have appeared in 30 major newspapers, and he has been interviewed numerous times on TV and radio, including National Public Radio.

COMMENTS ON NED HANAUER

"Over the years I have found Ned Hanauer to be not only a source of reliable information on the Middle East, but a passionate believer in creating the conditions for social justice in that violence-filled region. His information is always solid and unbiased." - Colman McCarthy, nationally syndicated columnist

"All three of these individuals [Noam Chomsky, Alfred Lilienthal, Elmer Berger] get 'special' mention in The Campaign to Discredit Israel (Washington: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC], 1983). The only other Jewish critic of Zionism who merited a special heading was Edmund Hanauer, the founder of Search for Justice and Equality in Palestine/Israel." - Edward Corrigan, "Jewish Criticism of Zionism," American-Arab Affairs, Winter 1990-1991

"All our listeners remark on what a 'wonderfully balanced' presentation Dr. Hanauer made and how he clarified and summarized a complex set of issues to further their understanding of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict." - Cambridge Forum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This meeting is sponsored by the John and Alette Quanbeck Lecture Fund.
