Subject: Faculty Summer Research Grants 2006

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: Center for Teaching and Learning
Faculty Summer Research Guidelines

DESCRIPTION:

Support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the filed.

Occasionally, curriculum revision is proposed in the teaching scholarship category. In such a case, the proposal must convince the Faculty Development Committee that the project goes beyond those course development and revision activities that are normally expected of faculty as part of their workload.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Quality Criteria. Preference will be given to proposals that show evidence of thorough preparation and that meet the following criteria:
- Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
- Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives
- Explanation of advance preparation and planning
- Clear description of the project's assessment
- Detailed timeline and budget

Other Criteria. Additional criteria that may influence the Committee?s decision include:
- Use of language and terminology that are clear to non-experts
- Necessity for funding for project completion
- Please attach a curriculum vita.

FUNDING: Up to $2000 per grant. A maximum of 3-4 awards may be made per year.
Source: Grangaard Faculty Development Fund.
Funding decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be requested by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Faculty. At least 4/6 for at least two years prior to the beginning of the research; prorated for faculty who are less that 6/6. Limit: One grant during a 3-year period.

APPLICATION: Please use the Research Application form that is available by calling Terry Martin, x1229. The application will be sent to you as an e-mail attachment and should be returned in the same manner.

Application Date: March 15 for the summer following.

Accountability:
- Completion of the following:
Professional Development evaluation form and assessment as described in the project application
- Sharing the results with the Augsburg Community via:
Presentation of a community discussion, Scholarship Fair, or another venue approved by the
FacDev Committee.

Submitter:
Ross Murray, Campus Ministry Associate; Tutoring Services Coordinator, Campus Ministry and Academic Enrichment

Message: Those of us in Campus Ministry and the Center for Service, Work, and Learning would like to thank all the students, faculty and staff who stopped by the Camp Fair last night. Some of you were visiting places where you have worked before. Some of you were interviewing for a job this summer. Some of you were just browsing to see what existed. The Camp Directors told both Sandy and me that they loved getting to meet and know you better. Thanks!

For those of you who are applying to work at a camp this summer (any camp), please know that there is some additional money available for you. You must turn in the application by the 15th of March. There is also an interview...sign up on Ross Murray's door in the Campus Ministry Office to reserve your 20 slot. This is some money to make working at a camp less of a financial burden.

For more information, contact Ross Murray at x1151 or murray@augsburg.edu. Have a good weekend!

CHICAGO, Ill. (2/18/06) -- With six weight-class champions, the Augsburg College wrestling team won its fourth straight NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Saturday at the University of Chicago, qualifying eight wrestlers to competition at the upcoming NCAA Division III national championships.

Augsburg, the defending Division III national champions and current No. 2-ranked team in the Division III national poll, won the regional meet with 162.0 points, ahead of No. 12-ranked Elmhurst (Ill.), which scored 134.5 points and qualified four wrestlers to the national meet.

No. 23-ranked St. Johnfs (Minn.) finished third with 89.0 points and qualified three wrestlers to the national meet, while North Central (Ill.), ranked No. 8 nationally, finished fourth in the regional with 85.0 points, qualifying three wrestlers to the national meet.

Augsburgfs weight-class champions were: No. 2-ranked Ryan Valek (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) at 165 pounds; No. 3-ranked Jared Evans (Jr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) at 149; No. 5-ranked Jeremy Anderson (So., Thief River Falls, Minn.) at 157; No. 6-ranked Brad Tupa (Sr., Dundas, Minn./Faribault HS) at 184; Jafari Vanier (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) at 133 and Josh Hansen (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) at 141.

Augsburgfs wild-card national meet qualifiers were: Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.), who finished second at heavyweight; and No. 6-ranked Robbie Gotreau (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who finished third at 174 pounds.

Valek scored three victories, including one by technical fall, to improve to 38-3 on the season in winning the 165-pound class and qualifying for the national meet for the third straight year. He finished second nationally at 165 last season and seventh nationally in 2004.

Tupa recorded two technical falls en route to his weight-class win at the regional, improving to 20-3 in the process. Tupa is making his second trip to the national tournament, after finishing fourth nationally last year at 184 pounds.

Evans is also making his second trip to the national tournament, after finishing seventh last season at 149 pounds. He had a major decision among his three wins at the regional, improving to 34-7 on the season.

Anderson, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, opened the regional with two major-decision victories at 157 and topped No. 8-ranked Jacob Malone of St. John's 6-4 in the finals to qualify for the national tournament for the first time.

Vanier, who finished second at 133 pounds at the 2002 NJCAA national championships as a junior-college wrestler at Iowa Central Community College, won his four matches, including one by technical fall, to qualify for the NCAA national tournament for the first time. He is now 16-2 on the season.

Hansen improved to 33-5 on the year with his weight-class title, scoring two pins to advance to the national tournament for the first time in his career. Gotreau and Neumann are also advancing to the national tournament for the first time in their careers.

The NCAA Division III national championships will be held March 3-4 at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., a suburb of Trenton, N.J.
