Subject: New Hall Residents

Submitter:
Stacy L Enger, Hall Director, Residence Life

Message: Attn. New Hall Residents:
Augsburg College has contracted with HYDRAMETRICS to perform a plumbing upgrade in your building. We need to enter your apartment to conduct this work. We will be working on your kitchen and lavatory sinks, as well as your shower and toilet.

*Starting Tuesday, January 31st, 2006 - Friday, February 3rd, in New Hall from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

We ask that you move any obstructions around (and on) the toilet tank. In addition, we will be running the showers and ask that you remove anything that you do not wish to wet. The work in each apartment will take approximately 30 minutes.

When compared with your existing sinks and shower, the new components will exhibit higher pressure and a different flow pattern. Thanks for your patience as you adapt to this new technology.

We thank you for your cooperation! ~Facilities & Residence Life

Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:
"How to create parody or
How I composed The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra with Garrison Keillor"
3:30-5 in Lindell 301

Music of humor and passion are the hallmarks of Randall Davidson's catalogue. His works have enjoyed hundreds of performances throughout the U.S. and Europe and have attracted the attention of critics , performers and audiences alike for their dramatic and accessible musical language. Davidson's catalogue encompasses nearly every genre: dozens of choral works, an opera, four ballets, an oratorio, a guitar concerto, chamber works, three orchestral works that have received over 200 performances, television commercials, incidental music for theater and puppets, a major sound installation to inaugurate the Minnesota Children's Museum, and music for jazz and wind ensembles.

Collaborations with Garrison Keillor have produced two successful large-scale works: The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra and a humorous oratorio, The History of Evil: Bible Families. The "Guide" has been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, has been commercially recorded two times (by the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra), and been cablecast on the Disney Channel. The "History" (five soloists, theatre orchestra and full mixed chorus) has received productions in Minnesota, Colorado and Ohio.

Refreshments are served at 3:30. The presentation begins at 4:00.

Subject: Join the new history honor society-Phi Alpha Theta

Submitter:
Michael Lansing, Assistant Professor, History

Message: The Department of History is in the process of establishing a chapter of the international history honor society Phi Alpha Theta here at Augsburg.

Established in 1921 at the University of Arkansas, Phi Alpha Theta was a charter member of the Association of College Honor Societies and currently sports 835 chapters across the nation with over 275,000 members. Its stated mission is to
"promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways." Over 9,000 undergraduates around the country join the society each year.

Initiates need to have completed at least four history courses (they need not be history majors), hold a GPA of 3.1 or better in history, and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. After paying a small, one-time initiation fee, students are members of the society for life. Indeed, two members of our history faculty were initiated into Phi Alpha Theta as undergraduates, and another joined Phi Alpha Theta as a graduate student.

Subject: Augsburg's Bell named MIAC Track Athlete of Week
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Tonnisha Bell named MIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/013106bell.html

MINNEAPOLIS (1/31/06) -- Augsburg College track and field sprinter Tonnisha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.

In Saturday's Wisconsin-Stout Open, the first competition for the Auggies this season, Bell recorded an NCAA Division III national championship provisional time in the women's 55-meter dash. Bell ran a 7.23-second effort in the preliminaries, eclipsing the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.33 seconds. She ran a second-place, 7.31-second time in the finals.

As of Tuesday, Bell's 7.23-second time is the fourth-fastest nationally among Division III women, according to the Raceberryjam.com website. The automatic qualifying time is 7.14 seconds. Bell's school record in the event, set last year, is 7.09 seconds.

Bell has been one of the dominant sprinters in the MIAC during her career. Bell has qualified for every NCAA national championship meet during her track career at Augsburg -- three indoor national meets and three outdoor national meets. She has earned All-American honors twice, in the indoor 55-meter dash in 2003 and 2005, both times finishing sixth nationally. Last season, she competed in the NCAA indoor national meet in the 55-meter dash, and in the outdoor national meet in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Bell has now earned MIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors seven times in her career, including four times last season. In conference competition, she has won seven conference championships (four indoor, three outdoor) and earned All-MIAC honors 10 times (six indoor, four outdoor). She earned MIAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performance honors in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, both times after breaking conference records in winning sprint events.

Augsburg will compete at the St. Mary's University Invitational in Winona, Minn., on Saturday (2/4) at 11 a.m.
