Subject: Must Know Info from CLASS and ACCESS

Submitter:
Richard Gubash, Disability Specialist, CLASS Program

Message: Just a quick reminder to all faculty from the CLASS Program and the Access Center:

In accordance with disability law and published college policy regarding disability and accommodations, and in order for students to receive authorized accommodations:

- Students must meet and establish eligibility through the CLASS and/or Access offices.
- Early in each semester, the student will present a letter to the professor outlining specific accommodations that are approved by the specialist.
- This letter is to be signed by faculty, and the student is responsible for returning a copy to the Accommodations Specialist.

The Specialist and the student determine what accommodations are reasonable and appropriate based on current documentation in the student's CLASS/Access file.

CLASS and Access recognize and encourage parent participation in the studentās transition to college. However, parents have no role in the formal determination and request for accommodations.

Accommodations are intended to provide students with full access to the content of your course and adequate opportunities to demonstrate their learning, but should never compromise essential elements of your curriculum.

We encourage you to contact our office if you need any clarification of the process or if you have any concerns regarding a particular student. Also, please direct any students to CLASS or Access who discloses that they have a disability. It is also recommended that you have a statement on your syllabus that also refers students to the appropriate disability office. An example of this statement is on our website.

Subject: Somali and African American Women to Form Dialogue

Submitter:
Nancy A. Rodenborg, Assistant Professor, Social Work

Message:
Last summer, Somali and African American women began meeting to form dialogue groups, thanks to a partnership of The INTER-RACE Institute, the L.E.A.D. Group, (Leadership, Education and Development) and grants from The Woman's Foundation and the Otto Bremer Foundation. The two Minneapolis based organizations, INTER-RACE and LEAD, are well known for their education efforts on diversity and African immigrant assistance.

"This program is the first of its kind to bring women together from the African American community and the African immigrant community to learn from each other," said Vivian Jenkins Nelsen, President and CEO of The INTER-RACE Institute. "We have had successful dialogue groups to bring groups together for many years at INTER-RACE. But this effort marks a new challenge for us."

Qamar Ibrahim, Executive Director of the L.E.A.D. Group said "We have needed to hear each other's stories and find ways to support each other."

The dialogue groups will begin on January 28th, 2006 at 1 - 3 p.m. with a free lunch at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Nelsen and Ibrahim are inviting "Women of goodwill to learn about each other's histories and cultures so that we can begin a new chapter of understanding and activity together."

Women from both the Somali and African American communities have trained as co-facilitators of the groups. "Young women and girls will be our next dialogue groups," said Nelsen and Ibrahim.

To sign up for the dialogue groups and reserve a lunch call the INTER-RACE office at (612) 339-0820 by Monday, January 23rd.
