Subject: Scholarly Writing Group: Celebrating Sweet Success

Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: Augsburg's SWG scholars have been accomplishing a lot recently. Though we don't credit ourselves with their successes, we have learned a lot from the work these three SWG members shared with us:

Dallas Liddle of the English Dept. presented a paper, "Bakhtinian 'Journalization' and the Mid-Victorian Literary Marketplace," at Oxford University in Great Britain on November 26, 2005. The presentation was part of the interdisciplinary First Annual Conference on the History of the Book, sponsored by Oxford's English Faculty.

Elise Marubbio of American Indian Studies and the English Department has just had her book manuscript accepted by the University Press of Kentucky. Death of the Celluloid Maiden: Images of Native American Women in Film traces and analyzes the most complex and long-lasting representation of Native American women in the history of American film--that of the young Native woman who falls in love with or is connected to the white hero and dies for that choice. Over a ninety-year period this figure emerged in premier films in various forms as either Princess or Sexualized Maiden figures through whose bodies national themes of colonialism, violence toward women of color, and fears of inter-racial mixing are played out. Through his iconic image, all the films reinforce American myths of the frontier, Manifest Destiny, and the ideal of Anglo-European America's pre-modernization innocence. The reliance of mainstream culture on these myths and various depictions of the Celluloid Maiden during different eras maintain the racial Other as an exotic or erotic danger to a homogenous national identity.

Lori Brandt Hale of the Religion Dept. has been invited to join the illustrious team teaching the course "Following Christ in a Time of Terror" as part of the Centennial Celebration of the Birth of Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the Cathedral College of Washington National Cathedral.

Congratulations to Lori, Elise, and Dal on their accomplishments. Please consider joining us to preview these impending successes:

Winter (Jan or Feb):

* Carol Knicker on educator interview project
* Jacqui DeVries on "Religion, Performativity and the Public Sphere"

Spring:

* Lori Hale on Bonhoffer
* Mary Lowe on French feminists and theology

We'll be meeting on Mondays again, from 11:30 to 12:45 to accommodate as many presenters and participants as possible. A schedule will follow soon.
