Intercultural Understanding in the Classroom

Faculty and Academic Staff Workshop
Promoting Intercultural Learning
Thursday, January 5, 2017
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Christensen Center-Marshall Room

Now, more than ever, we must focus on becoming effective models and teachers of intercultural understanding. Show your support for this important institutional goal by making space in your schedule for this workshop. It is designed to help Augsburg faculty and academic staff effectively support the success of all students by increasing their own intercultural awareness as well as their capacities to effectively facilitate students' intercultural learning both on and off campus.

Seminar Goals:

Through presentations and interactive exercises, the seminar will help participants:
* Understand what intercultural teaching and learning entails--including intercultural concepts and theory--and why it is important to the work they do with students.
* Understand and be able to apply several pedagogical "best practices" for facilitating students' intercultural learning
* Be more comfortable and skilled at facilitating dialogue across difference
* Be familiar with several activities they can use to facilitate students' intercultural learning and have an action plan for integrating such learning into their work with students
* Continue to work on their own intercultural development

Facilitator:

Tara Harvey, Ph.D., possesses a unique combination of experience in the field of international education and understanding of the process of developing intercultural competence. Tara has worked in international student services at Texas A&M University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison; she has taught undergraduate- and graduate-level intercultural courses at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. As Academic Director of Intercultural Learning at CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), Tara developed the signature course, ‘Intercultural Communication and Leadership' (offered at dozens of study centers around the world), integrated intercultural learning frameworks into CIEE's wide array of study abroad programs, and trained and supported resident staff around the world involved in facilitating students' intercultural learning.

This workshop is co-sponsored by General Education, CTL, CGEE, and the Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Initiatives
Questions: Jacqui deVries (devries@augsburg.edu)
or Leah Spinosa de Vega (devega@augsburg.edu)

Reserve a lunch by December 23 by contacting Mara Kilgore (kilgorem@augsburg.edu)

3D Printing Faculty Panel This Thurs., 9:40 a.m.

All faculty and staff are invited to attend a special faculty panel this Thursday.

How can 3D printing assist student learning in the classroom and in research? Can you use it to motivate ideas or help students make the transition from concrete to the abstract? Are you interested in finding out what 3D printing is and what sort of support there is on campus?

Please come hear your colleagues' stories of implementing 3D printing in their teaching. Brainstorm about how you can bring 3D printing into your classroom. Experience designing an item to be 3D printed using TinkerCAD. See the 3D printers in action.

You are welcome to arrive and leave at anytime during the session, but the panel presentation will occur during the first half-hour, and hands-on exploration and brainstorming for your classrooms will occur afterwards.

Panelists: Pavel Belik, Mathematics and Statistics; Dave Hanson, Chemistry; Robert Tom, Art
Moderator: Matthew Haines, Mathematics and Statistics

This Thursday: Why Academic Freedom Matters

This year the Augsburg chapter of the Association of American University Professors has organized the presentation and discussion, "Why Academic Freedom Matters in the Classroom," with Carleton professors Jeff Snyder and Amna Khalid, who recently published a major article in The New Republic on academic freedom and campus bias response teams (11:30-1pm, Thursday, 17 Nov, in Sateren Auditorium). The event is co-sponsored by Faculty Senate with support from longtime donor Judith McCartin Scheide, the Provost, and CTL. All students, staff, administration, and faculty are welcome. We anticipate a lively, vigorous, and challenging discussion.

Here are two different views on the event topic, the first by our guests:

Be a Part of Advent Vespers Processional Party

The 37th Annual Advent Vespers is approaching rapidly! Ten to twelve thousand people come to the 'cathedral-like' Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis for Augsburg's Advent Vespers. Hundreds of Augsburg singers, instrumentalists and liturgical participants will lead these five services. Be a part of vespers by carrying a candle, torch banner, or bells in the gospel processional! This is a great way to settle into Advent and spend time with other Auggies.

The services are on Friday, 12/2, at 5pm & 8pm, and on Saturday, 12/3, at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. Bus transportation between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran is provided, as well as meals and snacks.

Sound like fun? It is! Sign-up in Foss 104, contact Amy Hanson at hansona2@augsburg.edu or online at http://www.augsburg.edu/campusministry/advent-vespers/
