New Faculty, Sign up for the EdTech Cohort

Augsburg's Center for Teaching and Learning (in cooperation with the E-Learning Team) is offering a unique opportunity for new faculty members to participate in an EdTech Cohort to run for six weeks beginning October 20, 2016.

The Cohort will be composed of three 1 1/2-hour F2F sessions (3:30-5:00 p.m. on 10/20, 11/3, and 11/17) with online activities scheduled during the intervening weeks. The goal is to familiarize new faculty with strategies for integrating Moodle (and other available learning technologies) with their individual teaching approach. Activities will encourage participants to incorporate new strategies into their teaching preparation to avoid significantly increasing their workload.

A stipend of $200 will be awarded upon successful completion of the cohort. Any new full-time (tenure track or continuing special appointments) faculty who have joined Augsburg in the last two year are eligible to join the cohort. Email Mara at ctl@augsburg.edu ASAP to sign up!

Difficult Classroom Moments - Webinar next Tuesday

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in an upcoming webinar led by Kathy Obear, Ed.D, Co-Founder of the Social Justice Training Institute.

Many faculty members are experiencing a significant increase in both the frequency and the intensity of difficult dialogs in their classrooms. Their ability to engage students and facilitate meaningful dialog in these moments not only furthers learning, but can also impact student success. Mismanaged conversations often result in unresolved issues, misunderstanding, and simmering conflict that undermine learning outcomes and campus-wide goals to create inclusive campus environments.

Move Beyond Civility: How to Facilitate Difficult Dialogs in the Classroom
Tuesday, September 27
1:00-2:30 p.m., OGC 100

Sponsored by CTL. Read more on our events page: http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/

Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg's Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg's team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics students, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

To Apply:
Applications can be found on the URGO website. Completed applications must be submitted to urgo@augsburg.edu by Thursday, September 22. If you have any questions about the program, please contact us at urgo@augsburg.edu, 612-330-1441, or stop in at Science 152.

General Announcements

Accessibility of Purchases

At Augsburg College, we are committed to accessible environments for students, faculty, staff and guests: physical, instructional, and technological. To that end, we are instituting a number of changes to help us consider accessibility in all of our work. The Purchasing Policy has been updated to include this commitment and results in a change to the online purchasing requisition process. Effective last Monday, added to the requisition is a required field in the GL Analysis line at the bottom whereby you indicate that you have reviewed the accessibility of your purchase and it:
Y=YES is accessible
N=NO is not accessible
N/A=accessibility not applicable to this purchase
Your answer to this question will be reviewed along with all other aspects of your purchase requisition.

Since this may be new to many of us, and accessibility has broad applications, please call on these resources:
Kathy McGillvary, Director, CLASS Office, mcgillik@augsburg.edu 612-330-1371, and/or Ann Garvey, Vice President of Student Affairs, garvey@augsburg.edu 612-330-1168 would be happy to discuss your suggested purchase in relation to accessibility.

Somali Youth: Suspects or Citizens?
What is the Countering Violent Extremism initiative and what are its impacts?
NEXT TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th 4:30-6:30pm

The Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) initiative is a program of the federal government. Its stated purpose is to help states and local communities prevent and respond to emergent threats from violent extremism. Premised on the idea that harboring certain political or religious views is an indicator of future violence, the program targets the Somali (or East African) Immigrant communities, seeking people who might display so-called "vulnerabilities" to ideological or political "radicalization". In contrast to proven counter-terrorism strategies that focus on violent threats or behaviors, the CVE model asks parents, teachers, religious leaders, health and social service professionals, and law enforcement personnel to track and report to the government certain activities and expressions of free speech that are neither violent nor illegal. The program has provided substantial funding for youth programs through the Department of Justice, making it a point of contention and division in a consistently under-resourced community. Does the CVE prevent violent extremism in our community or does it target and marginalize Black Muslim youth?

Join us for this panel conversation with local leaders about the impacts of the CVE.

PANELISTS:

*BURHAN MOHUMED (Youth Organizer, Student)

*DOMINIQUE DIADDIGO-CASH (Anti-Racist Organizer, Restorative Justice Practitionar)

*RAMLA BILE (Principal, Qalam Consulting)

*KAFIA AHMED (Community Organizer, Consultant)

Coming Out Week: Trans'It & Queen of Myself: Las K

Coming Out Week Keynote Speakers

Monday, October 3
7:00pm
Marshall Room
Film Screenings

The Queer Pride Alliance and LGBTQIA Student Services Office are hosting a series of events from October 3rd through October 7th in celebration of Coming Out Week. This year we're excited to bring in two Keynote Speakers to showcase and discuss their films.; Dr. Celinay Rivera-Velazquex and Carolos Rodriguez. The two films that will be screened can be listed below:

Film: Trans'It (35mm)

Director: Carlos Rodríguez

Observational documentary that explores transgender identities in the Caribbean, specifically in Dominican Republic. Through the stories of three trans* Dominicans - Geisha, Tommy and Thalia—audiences learn about the social dynamics of being gender non-conforming in a ultra-conservative country. Because all the character are also involved in social justice activism, this documentary is also an ode to trans* activists in Santo Domingo who are fighting for visibility in a State that does not recognize their identities.

Film: Queen of Myself: Las Krudas d' Cuba (28 mm)

Director: Celiany Rivera-Velázquez

A documentary that captures glimpses of the lives and politics of the feminist Cuban hip hop group Krudas Cubensi in between 2004 to 2009. The film showcases their trajectory through the Cuban hip hop movement, community theater in Havana, and their migration experiences after moving from Cuba to the United States. The film was completed within a larger scholarly project titled “Alternative Spanish speaking Caribbean Femininities on the Global Stage” that brings attention to the work of Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican queer performers who reframe traditional masculinities and femininities through hip hop, electronic music, Afro-Caribbean and indie rhythms, and staged performance.
