Teaching and Learning

Classroom Consulting from CTL

Faculty, as the fall semester fast approaches don't forget about CTL's latest faculty development initiative, the Classroom Consulting program.

Augsburg's Classroom Consulting program is designed to offer individualized and course-specific faculty development through confidential peer partnerships. The program is run solely by the Center for Teaching and Learning and operates fully outside the tenure and promotion review process (see confidentiality policy). Any Augsburg instructor is welcome and encouraged to work with a consultant whether their goal is addressing a specific problem, exploring strategies to more fully engage students, or seeking ideas to re-energize a course.

Trained Classroom Consultants are available on an on-call basis to offer assistance to fellow faculty members. Assistance and support, provided without record and in strict confidence, may take several forms including observations of classroom teaching, review of course materials, discussions of classroom management strategies, tactics specific to hybrid courses*, or conducting focus groups with students (Small Group Instructional Diagnosis). Because consultations are course and faculty-specific, an initial meeting between the consultant and faculty member will be used to determine the goals and needs of the faculty member.

Read about the individual consultants on the CTL website: http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/classroom-consultants/

If you would like additional information or would like to arrange a meeting with a consultant, please contact Tim Pippert at ctl@augsburg.edu.

TOMORROW: LGBTQIA in the Classroom Workshop

The first CTL workshop of the year is TOMORROW! In this hands-on, discussion-based workshop, faculty will discuss strategies for creating welcoming, inclusive, and equitable classrooms and curricula for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) students, with a special focus on what they as faculty are experiencing in the classroom. Faculty are asked to bring examples of classroom situations they would like to discuss, syllabus statements they would like to workshop, and any other materials they would like feedback on.

This workshop does not meet the Ally Training requirement for the Diversity and Inclusion certificate; however, it does count toward the Advanced Standing certificate. This workshop is particularly suitable for faculty who have already completed Ally Training and want additional time to focus on specific classroom needs.

Led by Michael Grewe, Director of LGBTQIA Student Services and Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Orientation, and Adriane Brown, Assistant Professor and Director of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies.

Thursday, August 18
10:00am-12:00pm, OGC 100

We will look at best practices in syllabus design, share and promote common language, and with any luck get some actual work done. Please bring your laptops and/or electronic copies of your syllabi. Led by CTL Faculty Fellows Jenny Hanson, Communication Studies, and Joe Erickson, Education.

General Announcements

Website Refresh Coming Monday

On Monday, August 22, Augsburg will launch a refreshed design of our public website, www.augsburg.edu. The changes are designed to make the site easier to navigate for visitors (in particular, prospective students), encourage prospective students to stay on the site longer, highlight the characteristics that make Augsburg distinctive, and ultimately drive more prospective students (day, graduate, and adult undergraduate) to inquire about attending Augsburg.

The changes will include a new homepage layout and complementary refinements to department websites. High-traffic landing pages--including Admissions, About, Academics and Campus Life--also will be refreshed. You can find a preview of the new look at https://drive.google.com/a/augsburg.edu/folderview?id=0Bw3TkarzIotWaEJTb2FZSnlIaFk&usp=sharing.

Content managers have been notified about the changes. There should be no website down time during this transition, although you may notice some web pages in the new layout and others still in the old format during the course of the rollout on the 22nd.

Please send any questions or concerns to mannj@augsburg.edu.
