Public Safety and Facilities Announcements
Sidewalk Closure On 8th Street South
Facilities has the sidewalk on the south side of 8th Street shut down due to utilities relocation and concrete removal. The sidewalk will be closed until Friday, April 18. It is currently blocked off with signage, fence posts and orange snow fence. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Bryan with Facilities at massich@augsburg.edu and 612-280-7447.
Parking Restrictions Over The Next Two Weeks
Dear Augsburg Community,
In order to facilitate crews working on campus to prep for the Hagfors Center, there will be several street parking restrictions in effect over the next couple of weeks. Please be mindful of "No Parking" signs along these routes, and plan accordingly. Alternative parking lots for your parking pass are listed on the back of your permit.
Already closed:
- The south side of 8th Street South between 20th Ave South and 21st Ave South
- The north side of 8th Street South between 20th Ave South and 21st Ave South
- The west side of 21st Ave South between 8th Street and the I-94 sound wall
Starting Monday, April 11th:
- Both east and west sides of 21st Ave South from the sound barrier to 7th Street South
Streets will remain open to drive on - only parking will be closed. ALL of these parking restrictions will remain in effect until Monday, April 18th. We will communicate if that timeline is to be extended. Again, please watch for posted signage. All vehicles along the closed streets may be subject to a tow/relocation fee.
Please email parking@augsburg.edu with any questions. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We appreciate your patience as we work to move forward with this exciting new building!
Thank you,
Alyssa Sison

Develop Signature Assignments (And Get Paid) 4/15
Apply by April 15, 2016
Six Stipends: $300
In Fall 2015, the faculty endorsed a plan to require each major to incorporate a Signature Assignment into their junior or senior coursework. This curricular commitment grows out of the belief that every student should be challenged to complete a significant assignment that develops and showcases writing and critical thinking skills. In addition, the assignment could potentially engage students with other skills and sensibilities named in the undergraduate institutional student learning outcomes (iSLOs), such as information literacy, integrative thinking, ethical reasoning, intercultural awareness, global learning, and/or problem solving.
The Directors of Assessment and General Education announce a grant opportunity to support the development of these signature assignments. Six stipends of $300 will be awarded on a competitive basis to faculty interested in developing signature assignments for their programs. Following the ICD workshop model, grant recipients will work collaboratively to develop major assignments, as well as to help define the College-wide expectations and outcomes for these assignments. Participation in this cohort will help shape future curricular recommendations.
Participants should be available either the last week of May or first week of June 2016 for three 90-minute group sessions.
Please submit a one-page proposal outlining your interest in this program to Jacqui deVries devries@augsburg.edu and Kristen Chamberlain chamberk@augsburg.edu by April 15, 2016. The proposal should articulate initial ideas about what the assignment might look like and where in the curriculum it could be located. The proposal could also include ideas about how the assignment would address additional iSLOs (beyond critical thinking and writing).
One proposal per department / program, please.

Scholarly Writing Retreat
May 15-17, 2016
Dunrovin Retreat Center
Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat - it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.
The retreat will take place Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. (after lunch) through Tuesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please email ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

Flowers And Berries From The Garden This Saturday
Many of the flowers and perennials in the Augsburg Community Garden need new homes as we make room for new construction. We'll be in the garden this Saturday (April 9) from 9-11 a.m. to help people dig them up, or you can grab them next week on your own (we'll have the plots labeled so you know where to dig).

New Process Proposed for Study Abroad/Away Courses
The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center of Global Education and Experience are working to develop and implement a new process for off-campus course approvals (international and U.S.) The new process will ensure initial screening for financial viability and institutional risk; it will also support a collaborative review (including the department and dean) to identify required resources in advance of the annual spring budget development cycle. Study abroad and study away (U.S.) courses and programs deemed viable in the initial screening by Academic Affairs and CGEE would then move through the academic approval process, if/as necessary. We expect to implement the new process toward the end of the 16-17 academic year, with a submission deadline in November 2017 for any study-away courses proposed for the 18-19 fiscal year.
